Laundry Room Organization (Sunny Side Up)

You might remember last year when I did a complete overhaul on our main floor laundry room. When we designed our house I was excited to have all of the extra storage in this space, but I quickly realized that more space just meant more room for piles and clutter! This laundry room became a total dumping ground and was a catch all hot spot in our home for years. I finally set aside a week to work on it and I’m so grateful I did! I’ve been able to keep it organized ever since and now this space is so functional and full of useful storage for our family. You can see the complete breakdown of this organization project in this post.

Below are some fun before and afters for inspiration!

AFTER

Finally got all of my candles in one spot! Which made me realize that I had way too many candles. I gifted a lot of these this year and now have room for more. ;)

I also created a spot for all of the candles I use for decorating. Having ALL candles and candle holders in this room made decorating so much easier for me this past holiday season!

And you all know how strongly I feel about a well organized spot for batteries. Makes my heart sing! :)

So good right!? I still love opening this cupboard and seeing all of my labeled bins!

Everything in this spot just makes sense now! Especially having Kole’s swimsuits here so he can wear them out to swim and then I can wash them and toss them back in this bin. Saves both of us many trips up and down the stairs.

This lightbulb spot was a disaster for years after we built our house! I’m not scared to enter anymore. :)

Laundry Room Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Like I said, this post has even more pictures and details on how I organized this room! This project wasn’t easy and the “during” certainly wasn’t pretty, but so worth every minute spent!

Here are a few tips for the week if you are working on your laundry space..

– pull everything out of the room!
– touch each item and place it in a sack or pile
(keep/donate/trash/re-locate)
– wipe out/clean drawers, cupboards, shelves
– categorize the “keep” pile
(laundry supplies, storage, etc.)
– place items back in drawers, cupboards, shelves
– label any clear containers
– toss socks w/o a match
– clean out the washing machine (Google how to do this with your machine!  I just cleaned ours out a few months ago.. not a fun job but so nice to have done!)
– vacuum the lint trap
– use bins/baskets to sort dirty clothes (lights/darks/towels)
– establish a routine for laundry & get the family on board!

– add flowers/decorate (make it a happy space!)

When it comes to keeping up with the actual laundry my number one tip is to have a set routine in place! It should be whatever works best for you and your family! I started doing one load a day years ago and it works so well for me! I don’t have a well established, long morning routine like a lot of people do. I like to sleep until I HAVE to wake up with the kids.. ha. But once I’m awake I splash some water on my face, do some quick stretches in my bedroom, and then I toss in a load of laundry! Then I head to the kitchen to get breakfast going and help Kole get out the door. (Addison has already left before we even wake up because she has an early morning class.) After I get Kole to school I put that load I washed into the dryer and then I get ready and start my work day. (I exercise in the evenings now!) I usually fold and put away the clothes later in the afternoon or evening (whenever I have a break!). Now that my kids are older they do all of their own laundry which feels AMAZING. I trained them young (another tip moms!) and they do everything from start to finish. I just help with their towels and sheets. Tuesday is my main cleaning day so that’s the day that I always wash sheets and towels. I rotate weeks for sheets (downstairs sheets one week and the upstairs sheets the next) and then I wash all of the towels every week. Other than in the summer when I feel like I’m washing pool towels every day. :) With this system I’m usually pretty caught up on laundry by Friday so I don’t do much over the weekend.  For me it has always been so much easier to do a load of laundry a day vs. spending one whole day doing laundry, but I know for some families that might not be the case! Try different systems and figure out what works best for you.

Aside from laundry spaces this week is also a great time to tackle whatever your shoe/drop zone looks like! Whether that’s your entry, a full mudroom or hooks and a shelf. I’m organizing our mudroom lockers this week and can’t wait to have that done. They are a little scary at the moment. :)

Keep going! Don’t worry about perfection.. just focus on progress and don’t quit! We’ve got this. :)

  1. Always in awe of your beautiful laundry room, Erin. So happy your organization efforts from before are still working strong for you. Thanks for sharing a bit abour your routines, too. It’s always fun to hear how others do things to maybe tweak your own system a bit. Appreciate you and all you share! Have a great day!

    1. Thank you so much Jeanne! I agree.. always fun to hear how others do things and get ideas! You’re the sweetest. I hope you’re having a great week! xo

  2. Wow! It looks great. I wish you could organize mine :) I have a large laundry room and it also is a dumping place for many things — batteries, junk drawer etc, I absolutely need to do this and I’m starting by ordering the battery holders and the striped bins!! Thank you for the inspiration!

    1. I’m so happy this was helpful Rebecca! Thank you! Laundry rooms are easy spots for dumping things aren’t they!? You will feel amazing when it’s done. I just wish I would have done it sooner! Best feeling. Happy organizing! You will love the bins and battery organizers! xo

  3. Love the organized laundry room. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be careful storing the extra batteries you have that didn’t fit in the organizers. I didn’t know until I spoke with someone at the recycling center nearby how dangerous batteries can be if stored improperly. The containers keep them all separate for safety’s sake, not just for aesthetics. I was told not to mix different types / ages of batteries with varying levels of power; the older batteries can drain energy from the newer batteries. Batteries should be sorted by manufacturer – mixing them can cause leaks. The positive end of the battery must never touch the negative end. Those are just a few of the tips I was given. I encourage every reader to look up safe battery storage.

  4. You know you’re a grown up when you are envious of another person’s laundry room! Haha. Beautiful space and I love all the tips and before and afters!

  5. Erin, Erin, Erin,
OH, the laundry room. ONE of the laundry rooms! I had to take your page down and come back and comment, b/c as you know, I am jealous (IN a VERY GOOD way, of course!) of these organized and decorated spaces in your lovely home! As you know, mine is an older home and it is a constant battle to find storage space, regardless of its huge size. Any remodeling is taking absolutely forever, began before Covid and then the breaks went on. Just starting again. Got the stuff that HAD to be done, done. NOW there is a bit more of that (some windows, etc.) before I begin to do WHAT SHOULD be done in a house of this size, this day and age! My laundry room is STILL a major dumping ground b/c it is a multi-purpose room (utility room off the garage. Front load Washer/dryer up on the matching drawers, SOME upper cabinets(ugly), wire shelving, NO CLOSET. A small sink and shower for the pool and EVERYTHING that has NO space of its own is in THERE :-O
VERY unorganized/undecorated and it will be one of the LAST things, which is unfortunate, seeing the amount of laundry I always have. Don’t even mention pool towels!
Now on with the day. I am STILL in the bathroom drawers! I will be there for a LONG, LONG time……..

    1. Oh my word.. I so get it! Ha! I’m still working on bathroom drawers too! Or working on not working on them actually. I am definitely not getting to everything on my list! But that’s ok. One cupboard.. one drawer at a time! We will get there! PROGRESS is our goal. :) I’m so sorry about the remodeling taking forever! It can be so frustrating! Things always take so much longer than everyone thinks they will. I remember after we moved into our house we had painters and cabinet guys and electricians still here for almost 6 months! I was so done and just wanted to be alone in my house for a minute. Hang in there! The after is always worth the hassle if you can stick it out! :) xo

  6. Love your laundry room! I’ve got a question about how you have your machines inside the cabinets. If they need to be worked on, can they be pulled out? Is the tubing long enough for that? I’ve always wanted something like you have but my husband swears he wouldn’t be able to work on the machines if they were like that and I don’t think that’s true.

    1. Thank you so much Libbe! Ok.. here is the deal with that! They can definitely be pulled out! They reach and it’s not hard to do. What is hard is putting them back in the cabinet without scratching the cabinet! They are just heavy to lift and we’ve scratched the bottom of the cabinet above the drawers several times in both laundry rooms pulling them out and putting them back. Ha. I think if there was someone strong at our house to help my husband lift it wouldn’t be a big deal, but I’m always trying to help him with it and I’m a wimp and can’t lift them high enough! :) So it can be done! But it’s not always easy. ;)
