Thanksgiving re-cap

Sharing a few pics I took from our Thanksgiving vacation because it’s a lot more fun than unpacking and cleaning which is what I should be doing right now.  :)  We went to Utah.  I love going to my mom’s for Thanksgiving.  Lots of family and fall leaves and no stress about being in charge of the meal.  I can just be a helper.   I’ve found I’m a much better “helper” when it comes to cooking.

I was a good helper raking leaves this year too.  We don’t rake leaves in San Diego so this is actually fun for us.

Although I use the term “helper” very loosely.

We’d rake a few leaves and then instead of hauling them in the wagon the kids started giving each other rides in the wagon.

And of course I had to take a break to take pictures of them.  My dad came out in the yard to see how things were going and just shook his head.  What would he do without us?  :)

This was a nice attempt to take a picture of all of us roasting marshmallows over the fire pit.  Kids were playing in the leaves.  I took this and then decided I needed a different lens and my tripod.  Then I also quickly decided that I’d rather just eat some chocolate and stay warm by the fire instead of going to all that work.  So this is the beautiful picture I’m left with.  Photography is not for the lazy.
My girls had a blast with their cousins.
We tried out a few new hair styles.

My girls sang and my niece played her violin for a little impromptu performance for some friends of my mom’s.  My girls have such pretty voices.  They did not get this from me.  But I do sing a lot.  While I clean.  When I drive.  So I’m taking credit.

I took the kids on a little run after Thanksgiving dinner to burn off some of their endless energy.
All of the adults were thinking it was so great of me to do this but really it was just my secret way of getting out of doing the dishes.  I’m tricky like that.

And we spent LOADS of time drooling over this little guy.  Oh my word.  My nephew Finn is the CUTEST.  And getting so big.  I think I held him for a total of 268 hours.  Or more.

I bought him the little outfit he has on.  I feel it’s my duty as his favorite Aunt (sorry Carly – you know it’s true) to keep him looking stylish at all occasions.  The two of us are tight.  I know he misses me right now.  I sure miss him.

Back to unpacking and cleaning.  Bummer!
Or maybe instead of cleaning my new kitchen I’ll edit the pics I took of it.
And post them tomorrow.
WAY more fun.
Hope you enjoyed the holiday too!  And are being much more productive than I am today.

Wouldn’t take much.

Happy December!

I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving!
We are traveling home after a fun week with family but I wanted to pop in to say hi.
(me & my sister)
And to share my all time favorite Christmas picture that I post every year.
Because it’s tradition.
And because it’s my all time favorite Christmas picture.
Did I already say that?
Happy December friends!

Favorite Things

A few of my FAVORITE THINGS (re-cap)

Is everyone thawing the turkey?  Preparing for a cozy holiday at home?  Packing to travel?  Gearing up for pj’s and football?  Or for braving the crowds on Black Friday?  Thanksgiving is the best.  A time to be with family and reflect on all we have with the anticipation of December and Christmas right around the corner.  I’m SO excited to spend some time with my family!  Many of you have been asking if I’m posting my favorite things this December.  My friend isn’t having her annual Favorite Things party this year (like me she just built a home and moved – totally get why throwing a party right now would be a bit much!).  But I will definitely be sharing some of my favorite things for gift ideas like I have done in the past.  So fun!  For now, I’ve rounded up all of my past Favorite Things posts.  Click on each link below for LOADS of great gift ideas to get you started on your holiday shopping!  After the turkey of course.  :)

ENJOY!

Favorite Holiday Books

I thought it would be fun to share some of our favorite holiday books today!  I’ve shared them before, but I love them so much they’re worth sharing twice.  :)  Reading Thanksgiving and Christmas books with my kids is definitely one of my favorite parts of this season.  They get so excited when I pull them out every year.  I get excited too!  Nothing better than snuggling with my kids in bed and reading a fun book together.  It’s part of our nightly routine and one of my favorite parts of the day.  This time of year reading together feels especially special.  Hmm.  Especially special.  Did I just say that?  I like it.  :)  Holiday books also make great gifts this time of year!
Thanks for Thanksgiving is our all time favorite Thanksgiving book.  Kole and I have been reading this every night all month.  He loves it.  It’s a great book to start a fun discussion about all we are grateful for.
Love this book’s simplicity and gorgeous illustrations.
I’ve been thinking about a fun way to display our Christmas books in the new house.  In my previous house I always put them in a basket in front of the fireplace.  I always think about wrapping them individually each year (a fun idea I’ve seen on several blogs) so my kids can open one to read each night.  But then I think about how much time (and wrapping paper!) that will take and I never do it.  Much easier to toss them all in a basket!  :)  These have been our all time favorites for years!

Fancy Nancy – Splendiferous Christmas written by Jane O’ Connor – if you have little girls I’m sure you know all about Fancy Nancy! This Christmas book is just as “fancy” and fun as the rest of the series.

Olivia Helps with Christmas written by Ian Falconer – I LOVE the Olivia books. They are hilarious! Olivia the pig is a crack up and these books are humorous for kids and for adults.

The Elf on the Shelf written by Carol V. Aebersold and Chanda A. Bell – This is the book that came with our Elf and was our new Christmas book and tradition we started several years ago. Some of you asked where you can get the elf. Aside from the North Pole, I have also seen him hanging out at Barnes and Noble, Hallmark and Pottery Barn Kids. :)

Why Christmas Trees Aren’t Perfect written by Richard H. Schneider – One of my all time favorites. This story really illustrates Christs’ love for all of us and the true meaning of Christmas. I tear up at the end every time I read it and have to explain to my girls that I’m not sad – my tears are happy tears.

Santa Mouse written by Michael Brown – favorite Christmas book from my childhood. Santa Mouse is Santa’s tiny helper and he too visits each house on Christmas Eve. The story ends saying “And so this Christmas, if you please, beneath the tree that’s in your house, why don’t you leave a piece of cheese? You know who’ll thank you? Santa Mouse!” We always left cheese out for Santa Mouse with Santa’s cookies and milk when I was a little girl. Now my little ones do the same.

(cookies and cheese from Christmas 2009 along with letters and pictures for Santa)

A Christmas Dress for Ellen retold by Thomas S. Monson – a gift from my mom. We especially love this book because it reminds us of my grandma Ellen who Ellie was named after. The illustrations are beautiful.

I Believe In Santa Claus written by Diane G. Adamson – I gave this book as a gift to friends and neighbors a few years ago. It’s a special story that shows similarities between Santa and Jesus (he wears red, he loves little children, he wants us to be good, etc.) It’s so simple and shares such a powerful message. I love it and it is now the book we read each Christmas Eve.

The Tale of Three Trees retold by Angela Elwell Hunt – Another special book that illustrates God’s love.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey written by Susan Wojciechowski – darling story – it’s a bit long though so I always just tell it to my girls instead of reading it. :)

Christmas Oranges retold by Linda Bethers – same as above – darling story that is a bit long to read so I summarize. Another book with beautiful illustrations.

Frosty the Snowman retold by Annie North Bedford – gotta have the classics!

Rudolph Look and Find – my girls LOVE hidden picture books and we are total suckers for anything Rudolph.

Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear! written by Don and Audrey Wood – This book is just as fun as the original The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear. One of my girls’ favorites!

The Night Before Christmasone by Jan Brett and one by Mary Engelbreit – We have two versions because I love the illustrations in both of these!

Favorite Christmas Stories Rand McNally & Company – another fun book from my childhood.

Look Alikes Christmas by Joan Steiner – hidden pictures – my girls love hidden picture books and the illustrations in this are so colorful and fun.

Dick and Jane A Christmas Story – Ellie’s loves this book because she can read it herself. :)

Bear Stays Up for Christmas written by Karma Wilson – a cute rhyming story that is my little Addison’s favorite.

Santa Mouse Where Are You? Part two of the original Santa Mouse.

And then just a few of the classics. We love little golden book stories and we are huge fans of Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter books.

The Story of Christmas by Patricia A. Pingry – a little board book that does a great job explaining the reason we celebrate Christmas.

Those are some of the books we love and are enjoying this time of year!  Do your kids have a favorite holiday book I need to add to our list?  Do tell!

Happy Reading everyone!

The Playroom

Happy Friday everyone!  Thanksgiving is right around the corner!  This post has nothing to do with that.  But so exciting that Thanksgiving is right around the corner!  :)    Sharing a few pics of my new playroom today.  In our previous house we had a small office/landing over the stairs that we added onto and converted into a playroom for the kids.

It wasn’t a large space, but it quickly became our favorite room in the house.
A fun place to lounge on the couch.  A place to store all of the kids’ toys.
A place to display artwork and pictures.
A place to watch the classics.

And of course… a place to enjoy a nice hot cup of tea.  With a pig and a bear and a bunny.
And some ice cream on the side.
I took pics of the new playroom a few days before we moved in.  Now we have furniture in the room and toys are EVERYWHERE so I need to clean it up a bit and take some more recent pics.  Or maybe I’ll take some scary pics and show it as is.  Even better.  :)  But first let’s look at a nice clean slate!

We put wood floors in our upstairs hallway.

But decided on carpet for the playroom.  I wanted it to feel really comfy and inviting.  I chose a grey, short carpet for this space.  I didn’t want anything too shaggy for two reasons.  I want to eventually put a fun, colorful rug in this space (rugs work great on short carpet!) and also because my kids play on the floor so much.  I needed carpet that Thomas the Train wouldn’t get stuck in and that Polly Pockets wouldn’t get lost in.  :)

When you walk in you see another door on the other side of the room (post on that space later) and wainscoting along the wall.

These are actually huge pull out drawers!  I need to take more recent pics.  They have hardware on them now.  More on how I’m utilizing those babies later!

On the opposite wall are two windows and a TV.  For the classics.  :)

But my favorite part of this room is to the left of the TV.

See that?
Let’s take a closer look…

TOY STORAGE!  I can’t begin to tell you the joy this closet brings me.  (This is not organized yet and only a fraction of our toys – I started bringing a few over the week before we moved.)  During the framing stage I started thinking about our current playroom (the pink one).  And how my least favorite thing about it was that there wasn’t enough toy storage.  I called my architect and told him I needed some storage in the playroom quick before it was all framed out and too late!  We talked about built-ins around the TV but I knew that wouldn’t be enough.  I said “what about a big closet?  With just open shelves for games and bins?”  My architect moved things around a bit and said he could take some space out of the upstairs laundry room to make it happen (the laundry room is on the other side of the playroom).  I said perfect!  Do it!  So the laundry room shrunk a bit and we designed a simple closet for the playroom.
I decided to put accordion style doors on this closet because the rest of the doors in my house are big and heavy and I knew these would be open most of the time anyway.  This solution was perfect!  Like I said, most of the time the doors are open but if we want to close it to hide the mess we can.  Although I don’t plan on this closet becoming too messy.  Just give me some bins, labels and an hour to myself.  I’ll have it whipped into shaped in no time.  :)

This closet is stuffed to the brim now but it was nice for a few days to enjoy some empty shelves.

I need to do another toy purge before Christmas.  Preferably when my girls aren’t around to tell me that EVERY doll and stuffed animal is their absolute favorite and they will be devastated without them.
Really?  Even the purple teddy beat that has sat untouched under the bed for two years that you wouldn’t have known was gone?  He’s your all time favorite too huh?

Nothing like a blank space to decorate and organize.  Oh the possibilities!
I think I’m going to have more fun in this space than the kids.
:)

Powder Bathroom

Well!  I certainly didn’t mean to take a week off from my blog.  Has it really been a week?  My days are all blurring together.  :)  Kenny has been living at work (or traveling for work) and all three of my kids have been sick.  If you’re a mom, that’s all I need to say.  You understand.  No need to go into detail about dr. appointments and clingy toddlers and the best way to clean throw up off of the car floor.  No need to get into what nights of little sleep and worry can do a person’s sanity.  Am I forgiven?  :)  I need a serious pick me up after the past few days so I think it’s time to share my powder bathroom with you all.  FUN.  I’m so happy with how it turned out!  I hope you all like it too!

Our powder bathroom is the main bathroom on our main floor.  It’s close to the kitchen/living area and the bathroom that everyone will use.  This room is in the shape of a rectangle so it was a little tricky to photograph!  The picture above is the only shot I have of the whole space (as much as I could photograph at one time) and the lighting is a little off.  The rest of the pics I took with the ceiling light turned off and they are spot on with how this space really looks.

Oh my word.  So much planning went into this one tiny space that I don’t even know where to begin!
All of the cabinets and built-ins throughout my house are the same Shaker style.  I love the look.  Inset panels – clean, simple, straight lines.  For this powder bathroom I wanted drawers on the sides and a cabinet in the middle to hold larger things.  Like lots and lots of toilet paper.  :)
I kept the mirror design the same as in my girls’ bathroom.
I came up with this look for the top of my kitchen cabinets and liked it so much that I carried it throughout the house with most of my cabinets and built-ins.  I know what I like so I didn’t switch things up much!

Sconces on the sides of the mirror.  Figuring out electrical decisions were hard for me.  You have to do it so early on in the building process.  It’s smart to really have a good idea of what the design of your room will be so you know where light fixtures/sconces should go.  But it’s hard to plan that far in advance!

I love the Carrara marble countertops!  This has been a perfect spot for marble.  Nothing ever gets set down on these counters.

Two inch mitered edges for all of my countertops.  I just like them to look clean and “beefy.”  Nice word choice – I know.  :)  I left the space at the bottom of the cabinets for baskets.  I’m hunting for two long baskets that fit the space to hold miscellaneous items.  Not really.  I just want them to look pretty.  But if they also end up holding miscellaneous items – like more toilet paper – bonus.
All of the wainscot in my house is simple like the cabinets – inset panels.    We decided to add the columns to help separate the toilet from the vanity.  Originally I had a wall with a door there, but ended up taking it out of the plans just before framing.  The room isn’t that large and I didn’t want it to feel too cut off.  I’m so glad I did because I love the way the natural light fills the whole space.  Nice and open!

Top detail of the columns.  I was worried about these columns because I didn’t want them to look too fancy!  I like things so simple.  They had a lot more detail in the original design and I kept taking things out making them as basic as possible.  Same with the crown molding.  This crown is throughout our house in rooms we didn’t do a ceiling treatment and oh my word it was a pain figuring it out!  Apparently they don’t pre make crown this simple.  Everything my carpenter showed me was so swirly and fancy.  Kenny was like “don’t you just have a straight board?  That what she wants.  Something as plain and boring as possible.”  :)

Ok.  Can we please talk about this wallpaper!?  Do you love it as much as I do?  Oh my word.  I adore it more every day.  If that’s possible.  I knew early on I wanted to wallpaper this bathroom because it’s a smaller space and I was too big of a chicken to make a bolder move with wallpaper in a big space.  I also knew I wanted something grey and white with a geometric pattern.  I looked at so many options on-line that I liked, but they just didn’t feel like “the one.”  Then when I was in a local design store picking out fabric for my girls’ bed pillows, the designer helping me mentioned she sold wall paper.  I looked through several books with her and when I opened the page with this sample I heard music playing!  K.  Maybe I just heard myself singing.  Or squealing.  I’m not sure which one.  But it was loud!  I knew the two of us were meant to be together.  :)  So many of you have already asked about this wallpaper and I’m happy to give anyone the info. you need to order it!  Like I said, it’s not on-line so just send me an e-mail and I’ll explain who you need to call.  The store designer and I clicked and have become fast friends.  She is helping me with a few other things throughout my house.

Tissue paper holder is also the same as the one in my girls’ bathroom (Top Knobs).
You can find it here.
The hand towel holder is part of the same set.  The white towel is from Tarjey.

I adore latches and pulls.  This is the same hardware I put in my kitchen.
You can find them here at Restoration Hardware.
I’ll have to give you all the story behind my latches but I’ll save it for another post since this one is already too long!  That’s the funny thing when you build a house.  EVERYthing has a story.
Every room.  Every decision.  Some are funny and happy.  Some you just wish you could forget.  :)

Most of the lights throughout my house are clear glass – another look I love.  I fell hard for these sconces when I found them for this room.  You can order them here.

They take an edison bulb.  I’m a big fan of vintage touches so I have a lot of lights with edison bulbs.  LOVE the look.  The only downside to lights like this is how badly they show dust.  I will have to stay on top of keeping them clean.  Kenny thinks I’m crazy for ordering so many clear glass fixtures but I say small price to pay when they make me so happy!  :)

I decided to order a raised sink bowl just to mix things up in this one space.

Same vintage style faucet as my girls’ bathroom.  You can find it here.

And one last close-up of my marble.
Because like I said earlier, I’m in desperate need of a pick me up.
:)

Hot Chocolate Station

Are you all getting a jump start on your Christmas decorating?  Or are you more of a “wait until after the last pie is eaten” type of December decorator?  I love to slowly start my Christmas decor in November.  November is quickly becoming one of my favorite months.  As much as I love December, it definitely brings a certain madness along with it.  November feels a bit like the calm before the storm.  A month to start anticipating and getting excited about cozy nights curled up by the tree lights.  I love turning on Christmas music and starting to pull out the holiday decorations – taking my time – moving things around until I’ve found just the right place for everything.  I don’t know how much holiday decorating I’ll do this year.  Definitely some, but it’s a bit tricky since we are lacking so much furniture!  I need table tops to decorate.  :)  One thing that is definitely on my decor to-do list for this holiday season is to set up a hot chocolate station.  My girls and I love hot chocolate and a little place set up solely for hot chocolate fixings sounds so inviting and fun for this time of year!  I’ve been pinning hot chocolate station ideas on my Christmas Pinterest Board for the past two years and can’t wait to create my own pulling inspiration from the pictures below…
Aren’t they so fun!?  A hot chocolate station just seems to say “welcome!  come in and get cozy!”
Don’t mind if I do.  :)
I also stumbled on this adorable hot chocolate gift idea.
Such a festive gift if you’re in the mood to make something for friends/loved ones this year.
The one and only glitch in my plans to set up a hot chocolate station?

I took these pics yesterday.  Not exactly “baby it’s cold outside” weather around here.
Hot chocolate with your sunscreen anyone?
:)

Girls’ bathroom (questions answered!)

Peeking up from my mounds of boxes to answer your questions on my girls’ bathroom today!  Oh my word.  I feel like I’m making progress but there is just so much STUFF we are weeding through.  I unpacked all weekend and still feel like the piles are never ending.  The bad news is that life and the kids won’t stop right now so that I can take the time I need to really unpack and move us in.  Oh how I wish they would!
The good news is that I found my crockpot.  :)
Where did you buy the light fixtures?

These fixtures are from Quoizel Lighting and you can find them here.

What are you doing for window treatments?

We put plantation shutters on most of the windows and french doors throughout our house (aside from a few I’m going to buy drapes for).  I’ve always loved them.

Perfect to block the light, allow a little light..
or open them for a lot of light.

The girls’ have french doors in their rooms with windows on the sides of them.  Their rooms are BRIGHT.  I love how sunny they are.  Happiest rooms in the house.  We decided on plantation shutters for the whole wall.  These pics show the door shutters installed.  Their window shutters are coming this week.  In this pic El’s door shutters are open.

And Ad’s are closed.  Their rooms are pretty sparse at the moment.  We haven’t bought them furniture yet – just the beds.  This is their old bedding making due until headboards and new bedding comes.  Hopefully in the next week or two!  Once I get those in place I will start working on decorating the rest of their rooms.

We are also getting by with old bathroom rugs and mismatched stools at the moment.
I laughed when I laid these rugs down.
They seemed so much bigger to me in their previous bathroom.  :)
I’m hunting for some fun new rugs that will coordinate with their rooms.  El threw off my original decorating plan with her explosion of purple, but I’ll figure something out!
Where will hand towels go?  Hardware for that?

I placed their hand towel holders on the wall next to their built-in side cabinets.  I ordered them from Top Knobs – the Edwardian Collection in polished chrome.

We also added some new towel hooks on the wall (the only wall space we had to hang towels so that was an easy decision!)  These hooks are the Aubrey hooks from Restoration Hardware.

We bought most of our cabinet hardware at Restoration Hardware.  The pulls on their drawers are also the Aubrey pulls.  I adore them and put them in my laundry rooms too.

The hooks are spaced far enough to the right so that the girls won’t hit them opening their cabinet.

I mentioned a door that leads to the toilet.  You can see it to the right of the hooks.

I put these toilet paper holders from Top Knobs in several of my bathrooms.  Totally did this because my kids are AWFUL about switching out new toilet paper rolls and it drives me crazy!  I wanted to make it as EASY for them as possible so there are no excuses!  Just slip it on.
It’s the little things.  :)
A few pics of their shower niche…

These little niches in the showers were hard for me to figure out!  How high do you want them?  How wide?  What materials?  Where will the water spray?  Not a big deal in the end, but at the moment I was certain I was going to destroy every shower in my house by not spacing these right.

Here’s a tip if you are putting marble in your shower.  I used the marble on the back of the niche, but the bottom of the niche is a tile called “statuary” that looks like marble.  That way you don’t have to worry about shampoo and soap ruining the marble.  We did this in our master bathroom shower too.

What color of grey did you paint the walls?

Their bathroom wall is the same grey as my family room and hallways – “Seattle” by Frazee.  I was originally going to paint it a fun color, but after the girls’ bedroom paint went up I was afraid we would have an Easter egg look going on with three bright colors in line with each other.  :)  I decided to keep their bathroom a neutral grey and bring in the bedroom colors with rugs and towels.  I would add pops of grey in the girls’ rooms too if I totally had my way.  But their rooms are a compromise and the girls don’t want grey.  Just bright colors.  We’ll see what I can sneak in…   :)

I think that was all the questions!  Anything else I’ll answer in the comments.

And to my friend Shari who said in the girls’ bathroom comments regarding finally seeing new house pictures – “now I feel like I’ve eaten just one potato chip out of the bag and I want more!” …

Ha ha… that cracked me up!  More are coming.  Just be patient with me.  If you all saw the current state of my garage and half of the rooms in my house right now you’d understand.

At least I found my crockpot.
:)

Hardwood Flooring

I’m curious to know about your flooring – I love it!  Where did you purchase it?  What is the color?  I love the dark look, but have been told it’s super hard to keep clean.  Thoughts??

I’ve had so many questions coming in over the past few weeks about my hardwood floors.  Thank you  for being patient with me for a response!  K – here’s the scoop on my floors.  I’ve been dreaming about having pretty hardwood floors for 16 years now – my whole married life. Which feels like forever.  (In a good way babe.)  We couldn’t afford them in our first house and when we finally could, I wanted to pull up the tile and carpet and put in hardwood so I spent some time researching floors years ago.  Kenny convinced me to wait for our next house so I’ve had a long time to think about and research hardwood.  When it finally came time to pick out the floors for this house I thought it would be a piece of cake because I knew exactly what I wanted.  But instead it was hard.  Because I knew exactly what I wanted.  And I couldn’t find it!  These are the things I personally love and was looking for in hardwood flooring:

– Maple – I love the look of maple and maple is DURABLE – so important.  It’s high enough on the Janka scale (a scale that measures the density and hardness of wood) that it won’t dent easily.

Wide planks – I’ve always loved the look of wide planks (these are 7 inches wide).

Slightly distressed  I didn’t want them too distressed and casual, but I wanted some distressing because it goes with the elegant/farmhouse vibe I wanted for my home.  Plus the obvious – I have three kids and distressing hides a lot!

– Brown floors with grey undertones – Originally I wasn’t too concerned with the shade of brown, but once I decided to paint my kitchen islands grey we had a problem.  The grey didn’t look as good with wood that had strong red or yellow undertones (which is common in a lot of hardwood).  I didn’t want grey floors (a lot of salesmen tried to convince us to go that route).  I really wanted brown floors so we kept looking for brown floors with a grey undertone.

I would find a sample with just the right shade of brown, but it wouldn’t have any distressing.  Or I’d find the perfect plank size, but the color didn’t work.  I drove Kenny crazy trying to find the perfect floor that only seemed to exist in my head.  :)  Finally after searching for months we were looking in a local hardwood store and I explained my dilemma to the owner.  He said “we can do that!  You just need to have your floors custom made.”   He showed me various options as far as types of wood and different levels of distressing.  I gave the manager (who at this point I wanted to embrace) some samples I had and told him I wanted Maple with 7 inch wide planks, this level of distressing (on a sample) and this color (from another sample).  Kenny used his mad attorney negotiating skills to work out a fair price and then the manager (my new BFF) told me he would make me a sample of everything I wanted all put together.   I was so excited when I got the sample.  Found my floors!

SO to answer your questions  —  while I can’t give you a color, I can tell you that the product line is called “Private Reserve” and Summit is the manufacturer.

As far as keeping dark floors clean…  I knew if I went this route my floors would be high maintenance!  But every time I debated going with something lighter I just couldn’t do it.  This was the look I wanted and I really needed some dark to contrast all of the white cabinetry and built-ins and moldings.  I have so much white in my house.  I needed the dark floors to ground things.  So this was one of those decisions where I opted for looks over practicality.  That was the debate with almost everything in my house!  Do I care more about how it looks or how it functions?  Some things I sacrificed the look I wanted and others I sacrificed some function/maintenance.  But I have to tell you that after living with these floors for a couple of weeks I am SO happy with them.  Yes – crumbs show.  Dust shows.  I will definitely have to clean them more often than my previous floors.  But I love them so much that it is worth it to me to either clean them more often OR learn to live with them not looking perfectly clean all the time (most likely the latter).  :)  I have several products I’m using to clean them that have been working great.  I’ll share more about them in a future post.  I’ll also answer other questions asked about my girls’ bathroom in a post soon.  (Thanks for the sweet comments on my girls’ bathroom post btw – so  happy some of you liked it!)  I hope this post helped those of you researching hardwood.  If you’re having a hard time finding what you want consider custom!  Just don’t tell your husband you heard that from me.  ;)

Enjoy your weekend everyone!  Is anyone doing anything fun?
 I will be unpacking.
Or cleaning my floors…

My girls’ new bathroom!

Sharing some pics of my girls’ new bathroom today!  Before I start overloading you all with pictures of the new house I need to warn you that you’ll be seeing A LOT of white and grey.  Obviously I love white cabinets and white moldings and grey paint, but I also did this because I love to use a lot of color when I decorate and I wanted neutral backgrounds.  Addison told me last week “our old house was so colorful mom and this house is boring with so much white and grey..”  Ha!  I had to explain to her that mom hasn’t had time to “play” with the new house yet to make it colorful and fun.  So before you all decide I’m boring too I just thought I’d mention the obvious.  My house is neutral for a reason.  :)  Now on to the bathroom!

When I grew up my sister and I shared a jack and jill bathroom between our two rooms and I loved it.  We loved getting ready together and listening to music and talking and fighting over clothes.  Good times I will always remember.  :)  So I wanted the same thing for my girls.  My architect kept trying to convince me to give them each their own bathroom, but I really wanted the girls to be able to get ready together each morning and I wanted their rooms to feel close to each other with the bathroom connecting them.  So that’s what we did.

Lots of drawer space that we are so not used to.  I’ve always had to organize to make use of every inch and cranny.  It feels strange to have empty drawers and cupboards!

After the drywall went up, my builder called me and said that there was a slant in the girls’ bathroom ceiling from the roof line that he will patch up and make flat.  But when I saw it for the first time I said “Do not patch that!  I love it!  Let’s plank it!”   Kenny will tell you “Let’s plank it!” became a phrase he heard more times than he wanted to during our building process.  :)

I think the slanted planks give the ceiling personality and they are my favorite part of the room.
A fun addition that wasn’t in the plans.  :)

I need to take a close up of the counters and backsplash.  The counter is quartz (Caeserstone) called “Organic White.”  I used Organic White in the girls’ bathroom, on my kitchen islands and in my office.  We ended up using quartz everywhere throughout the house except in the bathrooms that have marble.  I debated marble for this countertop for a nano second (it actually would have been less expensive) but then I pictured my girls painting their own nails and spreading bath toys out all over the place (someday make-up) and I knew I would live to regret it!  Quartz is great if you want a clean look that won’t scratch or stain and I have to say I am loving these counters!  I’ll do a post about all of my countertop choices at some point and show better pics of them up close.

I did use marble in the backsplash.  Love the small hexagons.  I also used this vintage style faucet throughout the house – in the powder bath and in the master bathroom.

I adore these lights!  They are a bit nautical and I was excited when I found them because they fit perfectly with my mirror frame design (style and size).

I chose a grey tile for the floor.  I used this same tile in my downstairs laundry room but in a different pattern.  So excited to find some fun rugs for this floor!

You walk in a separate door to the tub/shower.  Then there is another door inside and on the right to a small separate room for the toilet.
This little space went through so many transformations!  Originally we had a tub/shower combo and a large built-in linen cabinet, but during the framing stage my builder pointed out that we had room for a separate shower if we got rid of the linen cabinet.  I did NOT want to lose my cabinet.  I knew I wanted space for towels and linens.  So we found a way to make a corner shower and keep a sliver of my linen cabinet.  Win win!  **Notice the left side of the shower where the paint meets the tile – our painters still have a LOT of touch-ups to do around the house and you’ll see that in my pictures!  My mom warned me that I would still be building for months after we moved in and she was so right.  Our house is still under construction.  (I haven’t showed you kitchen pictures yet because it’s not totally done!)  I eat breakfast every morning with my painter, carpenter and landscaper and by noon the plumber and electricians have usually joined us.  I love them all, but I’m SO ready to have my house finished and to myself!
I kept the girls’ shower simple and clean and just used white subway tiles all the way up.

Larger marble hexagons for the shower floor.  The bench seat is the same quartz as the counters.

I added planks around the tub and just used the subway tile for a backsplash.  There is a lot of wall space above their tub that I’m going to decorate.  Not sure how yet, but I’ll come up with something.

I added a hand sprayer and we are loving that little feature!  Makes it so much easier to get shampoo out of the girls’ hair.

Ellie loves that there is no confusion about which side is hot and which side is cold.  :)
I took these pics the day before we moved in.  New mattresses had just arrived for the girls!
They love to sleep with their bathroom doors open so they can talk.

Happy November!

Happy November everyone!  I woke up so excited today when I remembered it’s November.
Such a fun time of year!

For a school assignment Ad had to disguise a turkey so the pilgrims wouldn’t want to eat him.
But I’m afraid they’ll want to eat this even more so I’m not sure if we succeeded on this little project. :)

Kole and I may or may not have watched The Grinch last night.

And I may or may not have slept in my Christmas pajamas.

I asked Kenny the day after Halloween if we could put our tree up.
Him:  Are you kidding!?  There’s so much we still have to unpack.
Me:  I know!  We’ll unpack the tree!

:)
Happy November friends!
Bring it on.
