Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

Happy New Year everyone!  I hope you all had a nice holiday break and survived this week getting back in a routine!  We had a great Christmas and really enjoyed the time off.  It was the first time ever that we haven’t traveled right after Christmas and I was a little worried that we might all go crazy with boredom but I have to say.. it was really nice!  I guess we’re getting used to a slower pace, enjoying the outdoors and just staying home more.  Goodness knows we’ve all had plenty of practice with it over the last year. ;)  I took this pic on Christmas Eve.  Kole is 10 and right at that “suspicious” stage when it comes to Santa but just to be safe he left a last minute note in case Santa didn’t know what he wanted.  “All I want for Christmas is headphones (sorry I was kinda rushed).  Love,  Kole.  PS  thanks for coming.”  Ha ha.. I laughed when I saw it.  The girls helped him get the plate ready for Santa and then he wrote that quick when they had already gone upstairs and were waiting for him to start a movie.  Hence the “sorry I was kinda rushed” explanation at why he wasn’t writing a more thoughtful letter.  I love kids. :)

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

Santa remembered his headphones.  And also threw in some hot wheel race tracks.  I snapped these pics quick a few days after Christmas.  Kole is so close to outgrowing toys like this, but I’m in the business of keeping my kids young as long as possible so if he’s willing to still spend some time each day with cars I’m going to help make that happen.  Especially while we are spending so much time at home.  Santa also left a note with the headphones about sensible iPad time monitored by his parents which Kole wasn’t as excited about.  Ha.  Thanks Santa.  We owe you one.

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

I noticed after I snapped these that I caught the “Stay-At-Home Order Update” on the news.  These pictures will definitely mark a year to remember!

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

{Theatre Room details and sources HERE}

I have been busy getting my Christmas put away and my house clean and back in order.  You all know I put up a crazy amount of holiday decor each year so it’s always a good time taking it all down.  Ha.  It’s so much work, but I do have a system that makes it easier.  I put my 3 kids to work helping me bring everything upstairs to our theatre room.  Then I sort, purge, categorize and organize everything and put it all away in my attic.  I snapped this pic after I had finally put everything away other than my holiday throws and pillows.   Felt so good to see the floor in this room again! ;)

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

And yes.  I recognize that this is an unhealthy amount of Christmas pillows to own.  But I give myself a pass because Christmas decor brings me joy like nothing else!  Plus I share decor for a living.  So while my motto is usually less is more, I allow myself a few exceptions. ;)

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

In the past I’ve stored my holiday pillows and throws in black garbage bags but I wanted a better system.  I searched on-line and finally decided to give these Jumbo Storage bags a try.  They came in the mail yesterday and I’m in love!  So perfect for pillows.  I have 6 smaller pillows in this bag (4 stacked in the back and then 2 in the front).

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

Or I can fit 4 of my large pillows.  (2 stacked with one on the side and one long lumbar pillow in the front.)   Some of my favorite Christmas pillows are more than half off by the way!  I know.. not as fun to buy holiday decor at the end of the holiday when it’s time to clean up, but definitely when you can score the best deals.

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

{storage bags/souk wool rug/roll arm sectional/arc floor lamp}

I’m so excited about these storage bags!  (I got the largest jumbo size.)  They stack on top of each other nicely and have handles on the sides so they are easy to lift and carry.  But the best part is that I can see what’s inside of them!  So much better than the garbage bags I was using.  I never knew what I was pulling out of my attic until I had pulled the sack out and emptied it.  These 4 bags are holding all of my Christmas pillows and then I ordered one more (they come in a set of 2) for my throws.  These would also work great for storing comforters or other large blankets.  If you are short on space my recommendation for pillows is to re-use the same inserts over and over and store the pillow covers folded nicely in a drawer or bin.  That’s what I did in my previous home with limited storage.

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

This door off of our theatre room leads to our attic.  Our theatre room and this attic weren’t in our original house plans when we designed the house.  We had extra space over our garage and when our architect told us it would be easy and inexpensive to add an extra room and an attic space for storage we jumped on it!

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

I’m very glad we did because this little inside storage space has come in so handy.  It was supposed to be an unfinished attic, but I decided to add drywall and paint and cheap carpet and I’m so grateful for it now.  This is where all of my holiday decor lives and I feel like I live in this space from about September through January.  Ha.  I always get asked how I store my Christmas trees.  I just keep them in their original boxes!  I know it’s hard to smash them back in, but I’ve found that’s the easiest way for me to store them.  I can stack the boxes on top of each other and fit quite a few in a small space.  I keep them at the back of my attic (behind and to the side of our outdoor reindeer).

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

Addison was a huge help with the trees this year.  She was just the right size to sit and smush!  Ha.

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

I use a lot of clear storage bins and ornament bins.  They are hard to see in this picture because they are tucked in the back.  Trees and reindeer I just store out in the open on the right side of my attic.  Things don’t get very dusty in this space because of the carpet so I don’t feel like I need to cover them.

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

On the right side where my attic ceiling slopes I lay all of my garland.  I just stack it carefully!  The brown trunk holds stockings and tree skirts.  I’ve also been asked how I organize my bins and if I organize them by rooms.  I don’t because every year I decorate my rooms differently so I organize them in themes.  All of my snowflakes are in a bin, small reindeer, gold stars, small wreaths, greenery, pink ball ornaments, silver ball ornaments, etc.

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

On the left side of my attic I have all of my Fall decor.  Just a few clear bins with wreaths/swags on top.  Then all of my faux flowers for Spring!  I store them upright in vases and baskets.

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

I stack art and signs along the inside wall.  4th of July decor lives here too!

Holiday Decor Storage (Sunny Side Up)

Half of the attic is Christmas and then the other half is everything else.  Christmas decor makes me happy.  Did I mention that already?  So does organization.  So organized Christmas decor?

I’m here for it.

:)

Below are some of my personal favorites and a few other great solutions for organizing/storing holiday decor.  Happy 2021 everyone!  I’m so happy you’re here.  We’re going to have fun together this year. :)

Merry Christmas!

Night Lights (Sunny Side Up)

Just popping in quickly to wish you all a Merry Christmas!  I couldn’t let the day end without telling my sweet blog family how much you all mean to me. :)  I’m so touched that you let me be a small part of your day!  Your support and words of encouragement put the sunny in sunny side up for me.  ALWAYS.  THANK YOU!  Thank you for reading and for being here with me this year.

We snapped this picture today just before kicking off a few Christmas Eve traditions!  We have quite a random evening that has been pieced together over the years of things my kids love to do.  Gingerbread houses, Christmas stories and discussions about the reason for the season.  Starbucks in pjs to get hot chocolate/pink drinks and then a drive through a favorite neighborhood full of lights.  Take out from a favorite restaurant and then singing “Sweet Caroline” at the top of our lungs on the drive home.  Fred Claus and Yes Virgina, There is a Santa Claus for our Christmas Eve movies.  Cookie dough for Santa (our kids know he prefers the dough), cheese for Santa Mouse (a favorite Christmas book) and carrots for the reindeer.  Kenny reads Twas the Night Before Christmas and then the kids go upstairs and watch Madagascar and play the game Sorry every year while I wrap and Kenny crashes on the couch with Family Man on in the background.  (He’s always a huge help after 10:30 pm.. ha.)  Like I said.. so random!  Every year we add something new to the mix and then it becomes part of the Christmas Eve tradition.  I love the night and these four people so very much. :)

Night Lights (Sunny Side Up)

{Sources for my kitchen can be found HERE and HERE and pjs can be found HERE.}

Here are a few random pics I had on my camera that I never shared of my kitchen at night.  I added some twinkle lights to my garland over my range and they make the kitchen feel so cozy!

Night Lights (Sunny Side Up)

I didn’t get around to sharing all of my Christmas decor this year!  The month just flew by too quickly.  But the kitchen was my favorite so we’ll focus on that and next year I’ll be more on top of it.

Funny.. I feel like I’ve said that before.  Ha.

Happy holidays to you and your family!  I love you and hope you enjoy this special time of year.  Good things are coming in 2021!  I can feel it.

Self Care

*This post is sponsored by Walmart. All product selections and opinions are my own!
Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

{Wellness Gifts & Decor}

Talking self care today!  If ever there was a year for it, right!?  I remember reading once that self care isn’t just taking care of your health.  Self care is doing something that you truly enjoy.  Something that fills you up and brings you happiness or peace.  Something that centers you and makes you feel like a better version of yourself, which then helps you take better care of the people you love.  That has always stuck with me!

I really struggled as a young mom when my girls were little.  I missed my career as a teacher, I had no help (my family wasn’t close), I hadn’t made many friends in our area and my husband worked pretty much 24/7.  I learned a lot about myself during those difficult years and about what self care meant for me.  I learned small things that I could do each day or week to help me not just survive but thrive in my new role as a stay at home mom.  Even though motherhood in general is easier for me now and my life looks very different today than it did 12 years ago, there are still difficult days and the self care routines I worked on establishing then still save me today!  It was during those difficult years that I started my little family blog.  A place where I could share things that brought me joy (my form of self care!) – decorating, organizing, fashion and family.  A place for all things “sunny” because frankly I needed to cheer myself up daily.  Guess what?  It worked. ;)  12 years later this blog and everything I pour into it still brings me immense happiness and is my #1 form of self care.

Another form of self care for me is getting some exercise outside.  I don’t have to even work up a sweat, but this year especially I’ve tried to get outside (even for just a 30 minute walk/hike) every single day.  It makes a HUGE difference in my overall mood and sanity.

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

I’m a bath person!  If you’ve been with me for a while you know this already.  Many people have tubs that sit unused most/all of the time.  That is not the case at my house!  I LOVE taking long, hot bubble baths.  I wish I had time for one every night!  Nothing relaxes me like a bubble bath does.

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

Years ago I started a little weekly routine of taking a bubble bath every Friday night and I still do it!  I rarely miss my Friday night bath and have even scheduled things around it.  That’s how much I look forward to it!  Now that it’s cold I love going on a walk or hike Friday evening and then coming home to take my bath when it’s dark outside.  I’m always freezing from being outside and it feels so good to soak in hot water!  I dim the lights and light my candles and Kenny always shakes his head and thinks it’s so funny.  He teases me about my candles and my little routine and he can’t believe that I can sit in such hot water (I make my water HOT.. love it that way!).  But after he gives me a hard time (his routine!) he leaves me alone and makes sure the kids don’t bother me for 30 minutes.  That’s all I ask!  Leave me alone in my tub for 30 minutes every Friday night.  Moms need to squeeze in self care whenever possible, right!?

*Funny sidenote.. I had a clawfoot tub picked out for this space when we were building (love the look of them!) and then I tried laying in one at the store and it just wasn’t comfortable.  (Yes I actually laid in tubs to try them out.. important decision!  Ha.)  When I laid in this tub I knew right away it was perfect!  My dream tub was delivered early so I had it sitting in my garage in my previous house for months.  Sometimes when I was having a long day and the kids were acting crazy I’d sneak into the garage and hide in it.  Seriously!  Once or twice with a bowl of ice cream.  Since the day I bought this tub it has been a major form of self care for me.

;)

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

I recently bought this beautiful Acacia wood serving tray and it’s perfect to hold my candles!  Walmart has so many fun bath/spa essentials.

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

{dove bath salt/dr. teal’s epsom salt/dr. teal’s lavender epsom salt}

I always soak in bubbles and some type of bath salt.  These are three options I love and rotate often.  (Obviously I’m a fan of lavender.) :)

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

{anchor hocking glass storage jar/smaller glass storage jar}

I’ve been keeping my bath salt in simple glass jars on my tub shelves.  Easy access!  I designed the small drawers below these shelves to hold all of my bath essentials –  bubble bath, candles, wash cloths, etc, but I love also having most of those things set out around my tub so that my cozy setting is ready to go the second I am!

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

I’ve also been using this set of twisted lattice baskets and couldn’t love them more!  Seriously beautiful baskets for such a great price!  I was thrilled when these showed up on my doorstep and I saw them in person.  I also love this set of herringbone baskets, but decided to order the lattice baskets because they are so unique (love the round shape) and perfect to hold bath towels.

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

I picked up these diamond drop bath towels and the matching hand towels too.  We’ve had this similar set of towels in our bathroom for over a year now and they are still favorites so I have been looking for another good BHG set.  Love the grey criss cross pattern on these!

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

The smaller basket fits perfectly in the corner of my tub and I added this beautiful Acacia bowl to hold washcloths and soap.

The best part about this little self care routine?

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

Is how magical it feels at night!  I added some simple string lights around my window for the holidays and don’t plan on taking them down anytime soon!

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up){small apothecary jar/dove lavender salt/acacia wood tray}

It’s such a cozy space with my candles going!

Self Care Routine (Sunny Side Up)

Self care: doing something that you truly enjoy.  Something that fills you up and brings you happiness or peace.  Something that centers you and makes you feel like a better version of yourself, which then helps you take better care of the people you love.

Done and done. :)

This year has been a difficult year for everyone in one way or another.  It’s so important to help others, but we can’t really help others and be there for our families when we aren’t in a good place ourselves.  I’ve learned this lesson over and over throughout my adult years!  As difficult as it can be to make time for self care, I promise that it’s worth it!  You will 100% be a better mom, spouse, sister, friend, daughter, etc.  Put yourself on your calendar.  Find whatever it is that fills you up (it’s different for everyone!) and do more of it.

My wish for you all in 2021! :)

If you need some last minute gifts (or you want to kick off your own self care routine for the new year) below are some of my favorites!

Shiplap Santa picture display (Sunny Side Up)

Happy Monday!  Fun and busy week ahead! :)  So I’ve only shared about half of my Christmas decor.. ha.  I seriously had the best intentions of getting everything decorated and photographed early and the “decorated” early part happened but all of a sudden it’s almost Christmas and the photographed part is another story!  I think we’ll all live.. I mean – there’s always next year. ;)  And I’ll be sharing more decor when I have time this week, but really – didn’t Christmas week sneak up quickly!?  It always does!

Shiplap Santa picture display (Sunny Side Up)

{woven ottomans/red merry pillow/home pillow}

Here’s what my shiplap display wall is looking like at the moment!  I added garland (attached it like I did in my kitchen) and put up our beloved Santa pics we’ve had taken through the years.  I made them in the shape of a Christmas tree like I did last year and then when the amount of pictures didn’t work out perfectly I added a star ornament to the top to improvise.  Same stars I used for my family room tree.  I just attached it to the wreath!  A simple solution that added some 3D sparkle. :)

Shiplap Santa picture display (Sunny Side Up)

These Santa pictures are so special to me!  They show my kids growing up through the years right in front of my eyes!  One of the first things I would grab in a fire.

After my actual kids of course.

And some cherry ice chapstick. ;)

Shiplap Santa picture display (Sunny Side Up)

On my stairs I doubled the two garlands I used throughout the rest of the house and then I ran out of garland before I could do the top!  I had big plans to add lights and maybe some ribbon or something else fun and then never got around to it.  I’m calling it my 2020 stair garland and am making peace with the fact that it just won’t get done like I planned.  I’m very used to this feeling (as we all are this year!) so I’m not too phased by it.  I still might get wild and crazy and add some lights.

Show 2020 who’s boss. ;)

{Mumbai Rug}

I kept my mudroom decor really simple too!  Just added more of my beloved jeweled snowflakes to my baskets.

Christmas mudroom (Sunny Side Up)

And then this adorable HO HO HO pillow to my bench!  I usually jazz up my 1 2 3 hooks with Christmas ornaments but I’ve loved using them for our masks.  So convenient!  So the masks are staying put.  Hopefully that won’t be the case next year!

Christmas mudroom (Sunny Side Up)

I hung the other tree scroll wall hanging (from this set I bought for my family room) on my mudroom basket hook.  I love it next to the black door!  So moody.  Kind of like the lighting in this room.  Which was horrible when I finally found a few minutes to snap these pics!  But like I said.. it’s 2020 and I’m just rolling with whatever comes my way.

Christmas mudroom (Sunny Side Up)

I added some garland to my little hobbit closet door and loved it off to one side!

Christmas mudroom (Sunny Side Up)

So I did the same thing around my door casing for this room.  Makes a perfect backdrop for my Christmas cards!  I’ll share a pic when they are all up!  I’m still waiting for our family Christmas cards to be delivered.  They were backordered and are coming late of course.  Whatever!  You do you 2020.  Thanks for teaching me to become as chill as Crush the turtle on Finding Nemo.

Before 2020 I was a Marlin.

Christmas mudroom (Sunny Side Up)

Last pic on my camera!  I moved our dining room bench in the hallway to make room for the tree I have in that room.  I added another HO HO HO pillow (just love them!) and some garland above the bench and our hallway is feeling festive!  I tried attaching garland to my arched hallway mirror and it didn’t go so well.  Epic fail!

But DUDE.  It’s all good!

Ok ok.. I’ll spare you more Crush impersonations.

Even though I like so totally rock at them.  ;)

In other news.. I’m happy to report that I actually finished up my Christmas shopping tonight!  YEA,  I’m usually done so much sooner in the month (Marlin – remember?).  I’ve been very behind this year but thanks to Amazon I’m now set. ;)  While I was finding a few last minute gifts I rounded up favorites for anyone who (like me) has surrendered to the chaos and is still pulling things together this year!  I found so may fun things and love everything on the two gift guides below!  Random gifts for anyone on your list and they all come highly recommended.  Most of them are favorites of ours and a few things I picked up this year.  They all ship quickly before Christmas but that might not be the case for long!

Favorite Holiday Treats

*This post is sponsored by Walmart.  All product choices and opinions are my own!

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

“Babe will you take a pic with me before I start baking?”

Kenny teases me for a good 5 minutes about my apron and then this is the pic I get.  Not really what I had in mind!

I try to not laugh at his jokes (it only encourages him!) and then demand a re-take.

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

Much better.  I guess he’s forgiven for making fun of my Mrs. Claus apron.

This time. ;)

I’ve been in such a baking/treat mood this month and today I’m sharing some of our favorite holiday treats!  We’ve always ordered a lot of our grocery staples from Walmart.  Groceries are so expensive in San Diego and for years we have saved money by getting certain items our kids love like cereal, pretzels, peanut butter, crackers, etc. through Walmart on-line.  Walmart just launched a new benefit, Walmart +free shipping, no order minimum (excludes oversized/freight & Marketplace items) so you can get anything you need that isn’t at your local store with next-day or two day shipping.  We’ve been loving it!  It’s so nice not having to run to my grocery store every other day for items we always need!  Especially now while we are all trying to spend more time at home.  Groceries come quickly at the same everyday low prices.  I’ve been ordering items for my holiday treats with Walmart + and I love that everything I order shows up on my doorstep and I can start baking!  I get excited about anything that saves me time and this has been huge for me that way.  You can read more about it here and see if this is something that might help you and your family save time/money too.

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

Here are a few favorites we’ve been making!  Some of these holiday treats I’ve shared before and some maybe not.  They are all really simple treats that my kids look forward to every year. :)

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

First up last week we made our Applesauce Cookies.  My mom always made these when we were growing up (the recipe was from my grandma) and I especially love making them in December.  We usually give them to friends/neighbors, but this year I’m giving friends something different so we just made a few batches to enjoy at home. :)  I know many of you have made them and I love hearing that you love them too!  Here is the recipe if you are newish to my blog..

{Applesauce Cookies}
Ingredients:
I cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 cups applesauce
4 eggs
4 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 pkg chocolate chips

Directions from a previous post:
First mix together the sugar and shortening.  Add eggs, then add the applesauce and soda combined.  (I just put the 2 tsp of soda right into the applesauce can and stir away.  The applesauce kind of rises and sizzles.  That’s my favorite part. :)
Add the rest of the dry ingredients (I love that most of them are 1 tsp. – makes it harder to mess things up.  Although one time I messed up big time.  I made these and forgot the flour.  How do you forget the flour?  I don’t know but I did and wouldn’t recommend it.)
Bake @ 350 for 15-20 minutes (time may vary based on your oven)

Five reasons you should make these: 1 – They’re delicious.  2 – They’re easy – if I can make them correctly (most of the time), anyone can.  3 – The cinnamon and spices will make your house smell so Christmassy!  It’s the best!  4 – They have applesauce in them so you can pretend they are good for you.  They’re not.  But it’s always fun to pretend.  5 – You’ll want to see the applesauce sizzle part.  It’s just cool.

You all know that we make our Pretzel Hugs in bulk every year!  Here are some pics from previous years.  This is one of my kids’ favorite traditions and as soon as December rolls around they start asking “when can we make Pretzel Hugs!?”  Their friends also start asking “when are you making your Pretzel Hugs!?”  I love that they all look forward to it so much!

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

These never last long in our home!  So delicious!

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

And SO easy to make.  We made this sheet on Saturday and by Sunday they were gone!

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

Here are a few other simple treats we love making in December.  Grinch Santas!  Just fruit on a toothpick with a marshmallow on top.

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

You all know I love popcorn!  In December I toss holiday m&ms and pretzels in with the popcorn for movie nights.  So simple and it makes it feel like a special Christmas treat.

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

I also love making these cute Santa hats.  Just Ritz crackers, cream cheese, strawberries and marshmallows!  Eat these quickly after you make them or the crackers get soggy!  My family always eats these fast so it’s not an issue, but I once tried to make them for movie night earlier in the day and they didn’t taste quite as good.

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

These Ritz reindeer treats are Kenny and Kole’s favorites. :)  Peanut butter on a Ritz cracker and then add chocolate chips, pretzels for the antlers and a red m&m for the nose.  My antlers always look a little different because I get lazy making them and just work with whatever the pretzel looks like when I snap it in two  no two reindeer are a like.

Ha.  ;)

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

These treats couldn’t be more simple and that’s what I love about them!  Obviously I’m not a food blogger. :)  But these simple holiday treats have become traditions that my kids love so much.  I thought they would be fun to share in case you need some festive treats to add a little something to your next family movie night this month!

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

On a side note.. while I was going through pictures tonight I landed on this pic of Ad making pretzel hugs.  Addison is the only one in our house who LOVES cooking.  She has always been my best helper in the kitchen.  She is super short like her mom and always stands on her toes when she cooks!  #shortpeopleimprovise

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

Making Applesauce cookies with dad a few years ago.  In a pig onesie of course.

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

This was taken on Thanksgiving a couple of weeks ago.  (Didn’t Kenny’s turkey turn out nice?  I’m still in shock we pulled that meal off..ha.)

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

And I snapped this with my phone quick last night (she was making another batch of Applesauce cookies with me!).  On her toes once again.  It always makes me smile.

Holiday Treats (Sunny Side Up)

I really don’t know where she gets it from.

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack (Sunny Side Up)

{Treasure & Bond Extra Large Wood Cheese Board}

Well.. what do you think of my latest Christmas movie snack!?  I got out some of our favorite snacks last weekend and was going to spread them out on a board for movie night.  I turned on Michael Buble’s Christmas album and before I knew it I had a Christmas tree in front of me!  I was quite impressed with myself (doesn’t take much when it comes to cooking or preparing food.)  I was especially impressed with my cheese star because I didn’t have a cookie cutter that size and I had to whittle it myself.

It took me 3 tries.

I ate a lot of cheese in the process.  Ha.

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack (Sunny Side Up)

My girls came downstairs for the movie and were equally impressed with my Christmas tree snack board (it doesn’t take much to impress them either).  Everyday snacks just look tastier when they are laid out like this.. right!?  El wanted a pic with the Christmas tree.

And so did Ad.  After we snapped some pictures we called the boys and devoured it in no time.  My whole crew loved it and I see many more Christmas tree snack boards with Michael Buble in my future. (I can think of worse things!)  I ordered this so that I can be a little more efficient next time.

And eat less cheese.

{Christmas Family Room Sources}

The board I used for my Christmas tree snack is one of my favorites and is back in stock!  I actually own three of them I love it so much.  It’s just the perfect size for snack boards and for decorating.  I’ve currently got two of the treasure & bond boards on my family room shelves behind my reindeer. :)

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack (Sunny Side Up)

Cheese boards, serving boards, cutting boards (whatever you want to call them!) are honesty one of my all time favorite things.  I use them every single day.  They are perfect for every day snacks and for entertaining.  I also love getting extra use out of them by adding them to my decor.  You can use cheese boards as a beautiful wooden backdrop to special items like I did this year on my entertainment center shelves.

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack (Sunny Side Up)

A couple of years ago in the Fall I layered and displayed several boards on my mantel.

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

{Christmas Kitchen Sources}

Cheese boards always look beautiful layered behind a cook top/range!

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack (Sunny Side Up)

I also love displaying items on top of boards on coffee tables..

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack (Sunny Side Up)

and kitchen tables.  And entry tables and console tables.  All the tables are better with a board!

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

So are all of the shelves.  In my humble opinion. :)

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack (Sunny Side Up)

The holidays are such a fun time to use cheese boards for snacks.  This charcuterie board was one of my favorites!  My friend (who is an amazing cook) helped me with this fancy spread for my Christmas pj party a couple of years ago.

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack (Sunny Side Up)

When it’s me on my own my boards turn out MUCH simpler.  And much more kid friendly.  Ha.  I love throwing snacks like this together on a board for my kids to snack on.  (This is the same board I used for my tree.. perfect size!)

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack (Sunny Side Up)

What I love about snack boards is that you can literally use whatever you have in your fridge and pantry!  There is no wrong way to do it!  Pull together any fruits and veggies and meats and crackers and cheese that you already have on hand and when you lay them out on a cheese board they magically look delicious!  Trust me.. your kids will devour whatever you serve when you serve it on a board.  I’ve tested this theory with broccoli and it has an 89% success rate.  Not bad if you ask me.

Cheese Boards & a Christmas Tree Snack (Sunny Side Up)

{Platters and Boards / Savor}

One of my all time favorite gifts to give for Christmas and birthdays is a beautiful cheese board with a book!  For years I’ve given one of my favorite books, Platters & Boards with a cheese board as a gift.  This year I discovered and fell hard for the book Savor which is similar and would also be perfect to pair with a cheese board for someone special.

Or for yourself!  Because you owe it to your kids.. right!?  I mean.. 89%..  just sayin.

;)

I’ve rounded up some of my favorite cheese boards below!  Most of them you’ve seen throughout my home. :)

Recent favorites/gift ideas

Happy Monday!  Can you believe that it’s already December 14th!?  Just 11 days until Christmas.  That makes me sad!  I know we are all ready to wrap up 2020, but I am NOT ready to wrap up my Christmas trees.  Ha.  I’m also not quite ready for all things Santa!  I pulled gifts out yesterday and still have some shopping to do so the next few days I’ll be busy!  If you’re in the same boat today’s post might help!  I’m sharing a few of my 2020 favorites and more fun gift ideas.  I can’t believe the on-line sales this year and especially during the next few days while you can still get things delivered in time for Christmas!  Thank goodness for on-line shopping.  I can’t remember life without it and quite frankly..  I don’t want to. :)

Sunny Side Up

(mock neck sweater/boots here & here)

Cute newish sweater I wore last week the ONE day I wore jeans.  The reviews weren’t great because it’s cropped but I found it to be the perfect length!  Maybe that’s because I’m short?  I don’t know but definitely a keeper.

Christmas apron (Sunny Side Up)

(candy cane apron)

Happiest mail when this cute candy cane apron showed up!  I ordered two (one for Ad too- my cooking buddy) and they are darling!  Anything that makes cooking and prepping food more fun is huge win in my book.  (On sale!)

Favorite Gifts (Sunny Side Up)

You all know how much I love my Adidas sneakers.  I’ve been running around in various styles of this shoe for years!  Right now the Swift Run X Sneaker is on major sale in multiple colors!  I love the pink!  And the white.  And of course black.  I also wouldn’t mind having a pair in grey.  Really you can’t go wrong. ;)

Favorite Gifts (Sunny Side Up)

(Mellanni Bed Sheet Set)

Ok.. these sheets are hands down one of my favorite things from 2020!  If I was going to a favorite things party this year I would be taking these sheets!  I ordered a set to try a few months ago because I heard they were amazing and I wanted to see for myself.  The first night I had them on our bed Kenny laid down and said “wow.. new sheets!  I love these.. major upgrade.”  I started to laugh because they cost a fraction of the price of the sheets we usually have on our bed!  Plus he NEVER notices stuff like new sheets!  But I had to agree.  They are so soft and comfortable!  After we had them on our bed a few weeks I bought a set for all of my kids’ beds.  Then an extra set for us (we have one white and one grey).  And now I’m buying them for everyone in our family for Christmas!  I was going on and on about them to the girls who help me clean my house and they wanted a link to them so I decided to buy them each a set too.  Sheets for everyone!  I seriously love them so much!  I still can’t believe how inexpensive they are.  LOVE them.

Favorite Gifts (Sunny Side Up)

(pompom throw)

Another thing I can’t believe.  HOW is this throw still in stock!?  It’s so beautiful!  I’m obsessed with the look of it and with the cute little poms!  It comes wrapped so beautifully too.  (I shared it wrapped in this post.)  Would make a great gift!  I personally am not parting with it though. ;)

Favorite Gifts (Sunny Side Up)

(charging station)

This was my favorite thing from 2019 but it’s still such a family favorite I’m sharing it again!  We LOVE this little charging station and still use it every single day to charge our devices!  It’s always out on our kitchen counter or on my office counter unless one of the kids steal it and take it to their bedroom.  Then everyone gets mad and it ends up back in the kitchen.  Ha.  The best!

Favorite Gifts (Sunny Side Up)

Colleen Rothschild products were another 2020 favorite for me.  I’ve been using several of her products for months and am loving them!  I shared details on what I’ve been trying in this post.  They are doing a huge Green Monday sale today so it’s a great time to try a few of her bestsellers if you’ve been wanting to!  Skin products are pricey so I love big sales like this when it’s time to re-order favorites or try new products.

Favorite Gifts (Sunny Side Up)

1 – lux performance tank  2 – elevation bra  3 – banks shorts

4 – performance joggers  5 – performance joggers  6 – daily legging

4 – faux fur earbud case  5 – cinnamon stick bundle

I hope this post helps you wrap up your holiday shopping this year!  I’m so excited to have mine done and everything wrapped!  Feels far away at this point, but I’ll get there.  Somehow it always comes together right!?  Luckily I work best under pressure. ;)  If you’re done I’m so impressed!

And slightly jealous.

Christmas Kitchen

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

Happy Saturday!  Sharing some pics of my Christmas kitchen!  Simple but festive this year. :)

*all sources are at the end of my post – affiliate links used

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

I kept the same round gold tray I used for my Fall kitchen decor on my island.  Really loving pops of gold this holiday season!

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

(gold tray/white terra-cotta jar/fir & firewood candle)

So easy to decorate with just berries in a jar, a gold glittery tree and a favorite Christmas candle.

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

(white marble & wood round board/marble & wood small board/large rectangle board/wreath/marble & gold tray)

I added garland to the front of my mantel this year instead of just laying it across the top like I usually do.  It was so much easier to attach than I thought it would be!  I just used three command hooks on the two ends and one in the middle.  The middle felt like it needed something so I added a little wreath.  I planned on putting something with a pop of red on the left side of the shelf above my oven range and tried so many different items (more berries, reindeer, etc).  Nothing looked quite right!  So for now it’s just my gold mirror.  I’ll probably find the perfect thing right about when it’s time to take it all down. :)

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

(navy kitchen rugs/pendant light)

My cozy snowy village window scene that I shared a couple of weeks ago is my favorite part of my Christmas decor this year.  It’s a tricky spot to photograph during the day because so much light pours in this bay window!

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

While it’s beautiful during the day, nothing beats the way it shines at night. :)  These pre-lit birch trees and jeweled snowflakes are on sale right now!  I linked similar light up houses in this post.

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

I added another birch tree on the left and some small trees to the right.  I need to take a new picture of it at night with everything lit.  I’m going to be so sad when it’s time to take this down and might just leave it up through January!

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

(antiqued metal tray/faux snow/plaid plates/similar plaid plates)

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

I switched out my cutting boards behind my cook top and added this beautiful white marble & wood round board.

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

(similar glitter cone tree set)

Then I took the large round wooden board I used to have in that spot and put it on my kitchen nook table.  I added some trees and fake snow.. 5 minute decorating!

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

(faux fig tree/basket/table/similar chairs/similar skis)

I like to keep this table decor simple because we eat at this table most nights and it’s a pain to always move the centerpiece around!  My plaid red rug made an appearance again this year and just like last year.. it makes me extremely happy. :)

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

(similar silver pendants)

A few different angles..

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

(canisters/similar striped bowl/red kitchen-aid/tree board (on sale!)/similar wooden cake stand)

My little butler’s pantry is all sorts of festive too!  I didn’t double the garland here (you can tell it’s thinner than the garland over my cook top and window), but I love the feeling that just two simple stands of greenery added.

Christmas PJs (Sunny Side Up)

For a final touch I added the same small wreaths to the backs of my barstools. I just tied some jute string around them.  Such a simple way to add Christmas cheer to your kitchen!   (Christmas pjs and other fashion favorites are linked in this post.)

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

That’s it!  My 2020 Christmas kitchen.  We have really been enjoying our festive kitchen decor this year and baking up a storm!  You would all be so proud of me.  My ovens have been used so much the past two month they are probably starting to wonder if a new family moved in.

Nope.  California is just on lockdown again. ;)

Christmas Kitchen (Sunny Side Up)

(Christmas family room tour/sources here)

We have tickets to a light show Saturday night so I’m excited!  I guess you stay in your car and the sound comes through the radio.  I’m so curious to see how it all works! I know I’ll love it regardless because I’m all for activities that involve Christmas lights and staying in Christmas pjs. :)

I hope you have something fun to look forward to this weekend!  Other than the light show I’m going to attempt to finish my on-line Christmas shopping and maybe start wrapping a few things.

Or maybe I’ll just bake instead.

This is the new me!  Still the same old me, but with more time for baking.

My jeans don’t appreciate the new me but that’s ok.

I don’t plan on wearing them anytime soon anyway.

;)

Gift Ideas for Teens

*Recent pic with my girls.  Out of focus, strange lighting, chaotic and pretty much what 92% of our pics together look like.  Also now I’m in the mood for bread. :)

Ahhh teens.  Aren’t they fun!?  And exhausting!?  :)  Raising teens is a wild ride and not for the faint of heart!  That’s for sure.  These two definitely keep me on my toes.  While we certainly have our days, I have to say that for the most part I absolutely love this stage with my girls.  It’s like having two best friends living with me and the three of us have our fair share of funny moments, laughs and bonding on the daily.  My girls have been home doing school on-line since the start of the school year and even though it has had its challenges for all of us, I have honestly loved having them home with me more!  I only have a few short years before they are both going to be leaving the nest (tear) and I will always be grateful for this extra time we’ve had together.  Love them both way too much. :)

Today I’m sharing gift ideas for the teens in your life!  My favorite gift guides to put together because this is what I’m shopping for the most.  The gifts I’ve rounded up for teen girls are all items that my girls (and a lot of their friends) want/love!  I had to get some help on my gift selections for teen boys since Kole is only 10 and we aren’t quite there yet. :)  Luckily I have lots of friends raising teen boys and they all agreed on the items I shared below!  I hope these gift guides are helpful!  Teens can be hard to shop for and of course kids this age always love gift cards!  But I want my girls to have fun surprises to open Christmas morning and gift cards just don’t cut it for that.  I’m sure a Starbucks gift card will find its way into each of my girls’ stockings.  Those pink drinks add up quickly don’t they!?  Anyone else feeling my pain on that one? ;)

Gifts For Teen Girls (thesunnysiedeupblog.com)

1 – go girl planner and organizer  – I thought this was a cute planner for teen girls (and adults too!).  It comes with fun stickers and I love how it breaks down goals/habits.  It’s the perfect size for a purse/backpack and has great reviews.  A fun way to kick off what will hopefully be a better year for our teens!

2 – naked eyeshadow palette – LOVE these colors.  My girls are really into skin care and makeup and you can’t go wrong with Urban Decay Eyeshadow palettes.  I also ordered this one for my girls and I know this make up set is a hot item with teen girls this year!

3 – travel jewelry organizer – The perfect way to organize jewelry on the go!

4 – lululemon tamer haeadband – Lulu headbands are always a hit and perfect for dance, running, sports.. any exercise!

5 – cellphone crossbody bag – Remember the cute crossbody bags I shared a few years ago?  (I know many of you bought them for your girls!)  They were just the right size for a cell phone and some cash.  My girls have LOVED them (they use them every day!) but we always wish they were just a little bit bigger!  My girls always want to take random items too like lip gloss, etc.  I found these crossbody bags and couldn’t order them fast enough!  They are a little bit wider and have more pocket space for random items.

6 – mosen blackhead remover vacuum – On Ad’s wishlist this year!

7 – face & eye essential brush set  – You can never go wrong with make-up brushes for teen girls!  This exact set sold out but Nordstrom always has a great selection and this looks like a perfect set for a gift too!

8 – luna mini 2 – A facial cleaning device that teens are obsessed with!  The new Clarisonic. :)

9 – c7skates – Roller skates are making a comeback!  Of course they are. :)  They are too much fun and I love these cute colors!

11 – classic short robe – my kids love their robes!  Perfect to put on after a bath/shower in the winter.

12 – velvet jewelry organizer  – such a cute jewelry organizer and a great price!  Would be cute to give as a gift with some jewelry inside it. :)

13 – little words project – These are cute little bracelets with special words on them.  I especially love these for tween girls!

14 – dead sea mud mask – SO excited to try this!  It has rave reviews and my girls are obsessed with skin masks!

15 – tabletop jewelry stand   – Another cute option for organizing jewelry!  So pretty on a dresser/desk in a teen girl room.

16 – dr. martens platform boot – Docs are also making a huge comeback and it cracks me up!  Did you wear Docs in school?  I lived in them in high school.  They were the coolest!  I know.. I’m totally dating myself. :)  Nordstrom has a fun selection.  The pair I linked are the pair El really wants this year and they are sold out at Nordstrom and backordered until January at Urban!  Clearly a hot item with teens right now.

17 – pompom fleeced socks – A long time favorite for me and my girls!

18 – panacea necklace   /  gorjana ring hoops– Some favorite jewelry.  This necklace is a perfect personalized gift and you can go wrong with a nice pair of hoops.  A staple!

19 – erikson ties  – Our favorite elastics!  SO good and we have THICK hair at our house.  Perfect stocking stuffer for teen girls!

20 – faux fur bean bag  – My kids all got PB teen bean bags a couple of years ago for Christmas and we have used them non stop!  They love them in their rooms but also pull them in to the theatre room/family room for movie nights.  They are also great for when friends come over.

21 – slingback sandal  – These Ugg sandals are another teen favorite.  El got them for Christmas last year and has LIVED in them.  Ellie is a shoe girl (not as into clothes!) and asks for a nice pair for her main gift every single Christmas. :)

22 – charlotte tilbury  – This makeup set is perfect for girls just starting to wear makeup because it explains exactly where to apply each color (eyes, face, cheeks).  Charlotte Tilbury is always a good choice too.

23 – waterfall string lights Lighting for teen bedrooms!  Always a winning gift and I love these waterfall string lights!  Ad has something similar in her bedroom now for Christmas. :)

That made me laugh!  I guess to keep their own food/drinks close by?  Perfect for someone heading to college soon too.  #6 and #13 I’m getting for Kenny too and wouldn’t the indoor table tennis be fun if you have the room for it!?  Lots of easy ways to spoil your teen boys. :)

If you are shopping for teens and have other fun gift ideas share them in the comments below!  Parents of teens need all the help we can get right!?  And if you’re going through a phase with yours right now (like we all do!) just remember – this too shall pass.

Christmas pjs & a favorite tree

Stair Landing Tree (Sunny Side Up)

Happy weekend everyone!  I hope you’re having a nice one so far. :)  I’m coming to you from my stairs today.  I decorated a slim tree in my landing and am a tad bit obsessed with it!

Stair Landing Tree (Sunny Side Up)

It’s so simple!  That’s probably why I love it so much.  Just a fuzzy tree skirt and white ornaments.

Stair Landing Tree (Sunny Side Up)

Little white houses that light up (you have to set the house on top of a tree light!), snowflakes and white ball ornaments.  That’s it!  Took me all of 20 minutes to decorate.  I don’t have exact sources for these items, but I found several similar options if you want to create this look!

Stair Landing Tree (Sunny Side Up)

I kind of like this tree without a top.  Or maybe that’s just what I’m telling myself because I don’t really want to worry about figuring out a top for it.  Either way – this tree is going topless.

So scandalous.

Stair Landing Tree (Sunny Side Up)

View from above!  One question I get asked often is “what would you do differently if you were building again?  Any mistakes you feel like you made?”  Well here’s one.  I wish that our stair plug outlet was in the corner where my tree sits.  Ha.  Probably not the answer you had in mind (and really I  should write a serious post on that at some point if it would help anyone who is building/remodeling!).  But on a small scale, this plug outlet has always driven me crazy.   I could have hidden the tree cord!  What was I thinking!?  Maybe that I didn’t want to see the plug outlet coming up the stairs?  I don’t know.  But I chose the exact spot for every plug outlet in this house.  And in this spot I chose wrong.

I think I’ll live.  But that’s one little thing I would change. ;)

Special Ornament Tree (Sunny Side Up)

In past years I’ve had a small tree in this landing full of my kids’ special ornaments.  You could set a little tree like this on a table too.  So many fun options when you’re decorating mini trees!

Christmas PJs (Sunny Side Up)

{cozy joggers/matching henley top/similar red thermal/kitchen barstools}

Change of topic to Christmas pjs!  We’ve been living in them at my house and are quite pleased about it.  These cozy joggers rank high on my list of favorite Christmas pjs.  I’ve had the set for years and then bought my girls the joggers this year too so we could all match.  They are the coziest!  And have been just as big of a hit with my girls. :)  On sale for such a good price right now!  I often mix and match my pjs so even if you don’t get the top, seriously think about these joggers.  They look cute with so many tops and really are beyond comfy.  (For size reference I’m wearing the small and Ad is wearing the xs.)  Also Christmas kitchen decor details are coming soon but here is where we are at the moment!

Christmas PJs (Sunny Side Up)

{dreamy cotton pj set/slippers}

Another pj set I’m loving this year!  These are the cutest!  They run big.. I’m wearing xxs so definitely go down a size in this set!  They come in a grey and black stripe too if you aren’t into the candy cane look. ;)  J Crew has a lot of cute cozy pjs on sale right now and pjs always make a fun gift!

Christmas PJs (Sunny Side Up)

{pj salvage joyful top/joyful tie waist pjs/scuffette slippers}

Ok.. OBSESSED with this pj set.  Honestly my husband is sick of seeing me in them!  If you are going for pure comfort.. look no further.  I’ve actually mixed two sets here (the striped pants have a top and the top has matching bottoms) but I love these two together!  PJ Salvage always nails it with their pjs (in fit and comfort!) and there are TONS of cute options this year!  A forever safe gift option!   Also can we talk about how I’m honestly just now realizing that all 3 of my favorite Christmas pjs from this year are striped.  Ha!  Only slightly predictable around here.

I linked other cute pjs for women at the bottom of this post!

Christmas PJs (Sunny Side Up)

{every day two-piece pajamas}

Kole’s favorite pjs this year!  I knew he would love them because they are just cozy flannel pants (always a win when it’s cold) with basically a super soft t-shirt and that’s all he wants to wear/sleep in (this kid hates buttons!).  I also love that they are fun for Christmas but still work for the rest of the year.  They come in a cute green plaid too with a grey top!  He posed so cute for me for this pic it kind of made me laugh.  Looks like a little boy who has been in many pics with his mom over the years. ;)  He gets his braces off Monday and I’m kind of bummed!  They have been so cute on him and he has loved switching up the color of the bands every month.  Red right now for Christmas of course. :)

Christmas PJs (Sunny Side Up)

{oversized sweatshirt/vintage jogger sweatpants/scuffette slippers}

Not necessarily for Christmas but I’ve also been wearing and loving these cute sweats from Target!  They come in other colors/patterns but my favorite is this brown ombre.  Cute for teen girls too.  I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before they mysteriously go missing from my closet. ;)

Christmas PJs (Sunny Side Up)

{curved hem tee/cloth & stone everyday joggers}

Believe it or not I actually do get dressed!  Once in a while anyway. ;)  I’ve had these cloth & stone joggers for months and keep forgetting to share them!  I love the pattern and they are such a great fit.  Really nice material and I like the thick cuff at the bottom.  Higher priced, but definitely worth it!  I’ve worn them with a sweater and sneakers and also with dressier black tops and heels for date night.  CUTE.  On a side note the top I’m wearing is Treasure and Bond (available in other colors).  I really like Treasure and Bond tops and they have a lot of cute options on sale right now!  Kenny’s giving me this green hooded sweatshirt for Christmas.  He doesn’t know it yet, but he is. ;)

I’ve about worn out this hooded sweatshirt I shared a few months back.  So cute and perfect for running around with leggings!  Another Treasure & Bond favorite!

Another cute top I’ve been loving!  30% off and seriously such a cute fit!  Plus it comes in green so.. :)   Anthro is having a fun weekend sale and these are other tops on sale I’m looking at..

Daily Deals (Sunny Side Up)

{denver plaid dinnerware collection/cowl neck sweater/modern full length mirror/dyson V8 cordless stick vacuum/le creuset cast iron dutch oven}

If you follow me on IG stories or in the Like To Know it app I’ve been sharing fun daily deals I see when they pop up!  These are a few I found this weekend.  Honestly such a great price on this beautiful modern mirror!  It’s a thinner version of what I have in my hallway.  I love the plaid dinnerware.  I have four of the plates in my glass kitchen cupboards but would love more for entertaining.  Can’t wait until I can have people over again!  The vacuum is also on sale and supposed to be so good.  We have central vac but it’s so much work pulling it out with the huge cord every day.  I’ve been debating getting a Dyson like this one for quick clean ups!

Christmas PJs (Sunny Side Up)

{cowl neck sweater/AG jeans/davis knee high boot/madewell crossbody tote}

The cowl neck sweater is a favorite.  I have it in two colors and love it!   Love the neck, love the sleeves, especially love how warm and soft it is.  It’s on major sale and all sizes are available in black!

Fun deals.  Happy holiday decorating, shopping or vegging!  I’m planning to do a little bit of all three and am excited to enjoy the rest of the weekend with my family.  Chances are if you stop by to say hi we will be in our Christmas pjs.  All month long!

So scandalous.

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

{chunky wool jute rug/rattan-wrapped stool/wooden dough bowl/sectional}

Happy December to you and your family!  December always sneaks up so quickly doesn’t it!?  I remember thinking in March when everything shut down for the first time if we all have to stay home for two weeks why couldn’t it be for two weeks during December when it gets dark early and we are surrounded by cozy Christmas lights!?  I never would have guessed that we would still be in this situation, but my feelings on that haven’t changed.  If I need to spend more time at home, let it be during December!  Bring on the Christmas pjs, twinkle lights, popcorn and Rudolph!  And ALL of the cozy Christmas decor.  Speaking of cozy decor.. it’s time to tour my Christmas family room!  Grab some hot chocolate and come on over.  Aside from my pink Christmas bedroom my entire home is decked in traditional red and green for the holidays and I am one happy girl. :)

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

Let’s start with the tree!  I have Christmas trees throughout my home, but because this tree is in my family room where we all hang out it’s the tree that we spend time around and enjoy the most!  There are so many fun ways to decorate a Christmas tree (and no right or wrong way to do it!) but I am personally always drawn to trees with just enough ornaments to sparkle, but not so many that you can’t still see the tree/branches.  Which is why I kept our family room tree pretty simple this year. :)

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

Red and natural wooden beads for the garland, red berries (a staple for me because I love pops of red!), large sparkly balls, these gold mercury glass ornaments, and my favorite.. these radiant glitter gold stars (they are even more beautiful in person!).

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

I added candles to my top shelves (a mix of these and these) and kept the rest of my shelf decor simple with white demijohn vases, my favorite large cutting boards (back in stock!), a few gold items and a couple of my favorite reindeer friends. :)

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

I ordered a gold star for the top of this tree two weeks ago and it kept saying online that it was coming.  I just got an email yesterday that it isn’t coming and that it sold out!  What!?  So I still need to get something for the top, but other than that our tree is done and I love it this year!  Last year’s tree was beautiful (really I think ALL Christmas trees are beautiful!) but it just wasn’t me.  I’m so happy to have my red back. :)  It was also fun bringing more gold into this space!  I found some beautiful wrapping paper (here and here) that coordinates for a few special presents too.  And by special presents I mean the only few I’ve had time to buy and wrap. ;)

{similar faux fur tree skirt/green velvet pillow/gold votive holders/candles}

I didn’t take a close up of my coffee table display, but I kept it simple too.  I’m always tempted to style this rustic coffee table with all sorts of books and vases and fun decor, but we really USE this coffee table!  Every night our family hangs out in this room and our coffee table ends up covered in DVD’s and laptops and mail and Algebra books and toys and snacks and water bottles and Coke Zero cans.. ha.  So I just added a round gold tray in the corner with these simple mercury votive holders  (I ordered these candles to put in them) and some greenery.  (I linked several beautiful round gold trays at the end of this post!)

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

I added my faux cedar garland all across my entertainment center and it’s much more secure this year!  Last year I woke up several times in the middle of the night and ran in this room to check on it.  It was hanging on by a thread and I seriously kept dreaming it was crashing down.  That’s what happens when you have garland and Christmas decor in your head all day.  I also added a small wreath in the middle – just tied a piece of garland around it!

Because I’m tricky like that. ;)

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

Similar decor on this shelf and a lot of it was from Target!  I love this gold bowl and beloved books are always easy decor.  (One of my favorite books, Platters & Boards, makes a great gift!)

Moving around the room to the fireplace!  I shared more details and night shots in this post.  Still obsessed with my hanging branch!  Both of the garlands I used sold out, but below are some really good similar faux options if you’re looking.

For my console table I added some red faux flowers in a favorite white vase, a few leftover Christmas tree ornaments inside my dough bowl (sprinkled a few stars on the table!) and then candles and this beautiful winter tree wall hanging.  It came in a set of two and I’ll share where the other scroll is hanging soon!  Love them. :)

I have this gorgeous faux fur pillow in the corner of my couch (same pillows I used in my master bedroom).  They are HUGE and the softest!  And then my long time favorite red Merry lumbar pillow.  I’ve had this pillow over 5 years and it’s still a Christmas favorite!

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

Then I used red plaid and green velvet pillows for the rest of the couch and on my fireplace hearth.  And here’s a peek of my Christmas kitchen!  More on that space coming soon. :)

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

Of course the real magic of Christmas decor happens at night.  Nothing like the cozy lights of a Christmas tree.  They just seem to say it’s all going to be ok.

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

My 3 reindeer have been enjoying this space immensely too. ;)  I alway give my kids Christmas pjs around Thanksgiving so they have something fun to wear through December and this year my girls begged me for these cozy onesie reindeer costumes!  Of course I couldn’t leave Kole out so he got one too.  They are for adults but run on the small size.  (For size reference El is wearing a medium (she’s usually a woman’s small) and Ad and Kole are both in a small.)

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

{reindeer costume pjs/my snowflake sweatshirt/tie waist pj pants/scuffette slippers}

They really are so soft and comfy and my girls have been living in them!  One advantage to at home school.. the reindeer pjs never have to come off. ;)  I love that even though my kids are getting older this time of year is still so magic and special to them.  They get so excited for all of our family traditions and LOVE all things Christmas.  The four of us have been having so much fun decorating and watching Christmas movies and playing/singing Christmas songs and planning gifts for friends.  Kenny keeps shaking his head telling them that they are all too much like their mom.

I keep reminding him that’s not such a bad thing. ;)

Christmas Family Room (Sunny Side Up)

That’s a wrap on my 2020 Christmas family room tour!  I so hope you enjoyed it. :)  I’ll share a tour in IG stories soon too if you hang with me there.  Enjoy your day and happy holiday decorating!

Gift Guides (Sunny Side Up)

It’s time!  Bring on the popcorn and Christmas movies!

Gift Guides (Sunny Side Up)

Christmas movies are on repeat at our house and they are cheering us up immensely.  Rudolph is just a welcome sight every year isn’t he!?  The best.  I recently picked up this cute red hot air popcorn maker from Walmart and we have been having so much fun with it!  I’ve always been a popcorn lover at heart and there’s something magical about using a popcorn maker to pop your own.  Makes it feel extra special. :)  This popcorn maker is small but packs a big punch and is so easy to use!  (I got the cute bowls at Walmart last time I was there too but can’t find them on-line!  Shared a few similar options below.)  We’ve  been debating buying a larger popcorn maker for our theatre room and are looking at a couple of these options.  It would be so much fun when we can start having parties in this room again!  *Hint hint Santa.. :)
