My Christmas Porch

Christmas Front Porch (Sunny Side Up)

{Champion Sweatshirt/Yoga Pants/similar Adidas Sneakers}

I’ve been up on a ladder all week!  And I’m still standing with no injuries!  And my front porch is ready for Christmas!  And it’s Friday!  Clearly there are reasons to celebrate around here. :)

If you hang out with me on IG stories you might have witnessed the day I attempted to hang this garland around my door and half of it came crashing down.  It wouldn’t be holiday decorating without a few minor hangups now would it!?  Ha.  I had to replace a command hook and then we were back in business!

Ready to see my 2019 Christmas porch?

Christmas Front Porch (Sunny Side Up)

{Bells/Wreath Hook/Trees/Baskets/similar Striped Rug/similar mats here and here}

I’m so excited about how it turned out!  It’s simple and clean and screams Christmas and that’s what I love about it.  All of the greenery is fake but looks incredibly real which is also a favorite.  Getting the look without the maintenance and mess?  Sign. Me. Up.  :)  The garland is the same garland I used on my mantel that sold out, but below are some other realistic garland options I’ve found that are still in stock!

Christmas Front Porch (Sunny Side Up)

I’m especially excited about these adorable faux potted Cyprus Trees.  Could not love them more!  They look so real and are absolutely beautiful in person.  So fun for inside or outside.  They came in a black pot but I knew I wanted them in baskets so I tried several baskets I already owned.  My beachcomber basket that I use for my faux fig tree was a great fit (you can see it in the first picture), but I didn’t love the tall handles that were touching the tree.

Christmas Front Porch (Sunny Side Up)

I had to make a Target run for some other things a couple of days later and spotted these cute baskets and decided I’d buy two and just try them and what do you know.. PERFECTION.  The exact size I needed and they look like they were MADE to hold my new trees.  Don’t you love it when things just click like that?  A trip to Target is always a good thing!

If only I could get my husband to understand this universal truth..

Christmas Front Porch (Sunny Side Up)

This was the first time I’ve ever put anything around my front door so there was a bit of trial and error involved!  Basically I just measured how long the garland would hang to barely touch the ground.

Christmas Front Porch (Sunny Side Up)

Then I placed two command hooks next to each side of my front door and hung one garland on each side.  (The garland I used is 6 feet long.)

Christmas Front Porch (Sunny Side Up)

It took one more garland to go across the top of the door and hang down on each side long enough to meet the other garland I placed on the command hooks.  (So this look took 3 garlands total.)  The top felt too thin to me but I didn’t want to use another garland to make it thicker (I was running out and still had spots I wanted the garland inside!) so I added a few berry picks.  (Similar options are here and here.)  It made the garland look more full on the top and I like how the berries and eucalyptus leaves add a little something extra. :)

Christmas Front Porch (Sunny Side Up)

I had to place 2 command hooks on the top sides of my door ledge also to hold the garland in place on top.  I added the word command to this picture in the 4 spots I placed the hooks!  Fingers crossed they stay put.  At least until December 26th.  I’ll hold my breath just like I did hoping my Fall mums would stay alive.  (It’s beyond a miracle that they did!)

Christmas Front Porch (Sunny Side Up)

I might add some lights to the trees.. and maybe some garland or ornaments?  Or not.  I’m really enjoying the simplicity of this look right now.

Merry + Bright.  I love this time of year.

In case you didn’t already know.

Enjoy your weekend and if you’re taking off early for Thanksgiving travel safe!

Holiday Gift Guide (neighbors, teachers and friends)

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a good weekend! I finished decorating my front porch and I’m so excited about how it turned out! Really simple this year but that’s what is appealing to me at the moment. :) I’ll share it soon! Today is my first holiday gift guide and I’ve rounded up some fun gift ideas for neighbors, teachers and friends!  One thing I’ve started doing in recent years is buying my kids’ teacher gifts and delivering them early in December.  I used to wait until the last day of school before Christmas break, but the teachers are bombarded with so many gifts that day!  It’s nice to give them a little something earlier in the month with a hand written note from my kids.  I do that often with friend/neighbor gifts too and then you can give a gift that they can enjoy during December.  The bonus is those gifts are checked off of my list early and I can focus on family gifts and December activities.  Just a quick tip if that helps anyone! :)

Holiday Gift Guide - Neighbors, Teachers, Friends (Sunny Side Up)

1 –  Floral Spiral Notebook – You all know how much I love a good list!  A cute notebook and pens is something everyone can use.

2 – Tumbler 4 Pack – You can’t go wrong with a Starbucks gift card and adding a cute tumbler with it makes the gift even more fun!  This 4 pack is so cute and could be spread out with gift cards to 4 different teachers/friends.

3- Chocolate Croissants – I have friends who swear these are the best Croissants ever!  I was going to try them last year and the forgot so this year for sure!  They would make such a nice gift for a family to enjoy over the holiday break!

4- Magnolia Table Recipe Book – Joanna’s recipe book would be a hit for anyone who loves to cook!  Personally I’d prefer the pre-made croissants, but to each their own.  Ha. ;)

5- Beanie & Plaid Scarf Set – This beanie and plaid scarf set is adorable in both color options!  Clothes can be tricky to buy for others if you don’t know exact sizes, but a scarf and beanie would work for anyone who lives in cold temps!

6- Initial Necklace – I have this initial necklace and it’s so beautiful!  Perfect for someone special on your list.  I’ve given initial necklaces to friends and to both of my daughters for gifts in the past and they are always a hit!

7-  Peppermint Bark and Peppermint Hot Chocolate – Two of our long time favorites for neighbors gifts!  Of course we always pick some up for our family to enjoy each December too. :)

8- Rae Phone Crossbody – Last year I gave my girls similar crossbody bags for Christmas and they have loved them!  These are so perfect with a spot for your phone and a section for credit cards.  They come in lots of cute colors too!

9- Doleman Sleeve Cardigan – Who doesn’t love a great cardi this time of year!?  Perfect for any woman on your list!  This one is so stylish and comes in lots of colors.

10- Amazing Grace Shower Gel  and Lavande Foaming Bath – Both of these are on my Christmas wish list this year!  I LOVE taking a hot bubble bath at the end of a long week and both of these products come highly recommended!

11- Eyeshadow Palette – An amazing deal on this Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow palette!  I always hear rave reviews about CT makeup and this set comes with both every day and special occasion options.  Going to add this one to my list for Santa too. :)

12- Round Marble Serving Board – You can’t go wrong giving someone a serving board and this round marble board is beautiful!  I have it and love it and use it often for both serving and decor.

13- Butter Socks – One of my long time favorite gifts to give!  The coziest socks ever.  I gave these to friends after my Christmas pajama party last year!

14-  White Popcorn Bowls Set Of Five  and World Market Red Popcorn Bowl – Popcorn is a staple at our house and so are fun popcorn bowls!  We have the red set but how cute is this white and black set I found too!?  Such a perfect gift with some homemade popcorn or a package of Popcornopolis!  Another favorite at our house. :)

15-  Cozy Pom Pom Throw – I’ve given throws for teacher gifts in the past and they make great gifts this time of year.  This pom pom throw is so soft and fuzzy and would also look great draped over a couch.  A win for anyone on your list!

I hope these gift ideas were helpful!  And that your Monday isn’t too Mondayish. :)

Without further rambling from me.. here are my 2019 favorite things!

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

(You can find my mantel sources and how I attached my garland here and my cute new thermal pjs here!)

Still waiting on my wreath to come so that I can finish decorating this fireplace, but that doesn’t stop me from chilling here in the cold mornings after I drop my kids off at school!  Hot chocolate in hand of course because it’s 68 degrees in San Diego.  Brrrr. ;)  Don’t worry about me though.. I can handle the frozen tundra that surrounds me because I have my Barefoot Dreams Cozy Chic Throw and my long time favorite Pom Pom Fleece Lined Socks (so many fun colors this year!).  I have to say that I hesitated buying this throw for years because of the price!  I kept hearing how amazing it was but it’s so expensive for a blanket.  I bought it during the N sale last summer and loved it, but still couldn’t decide if it was worth the price.  Well now that the temps are cooler guess what throw EVERYONE in my family is fighting over?  It’s so good you guys.  So soft.. so warm.. so cozy.  It’s a splurge for sure, but it’s the gift that keeps on giving.  I’ve actually been hiding it in my bedroom lately and just pulling it out after my kids are asleep because I want it all to myself!  (My new pjs are so cute and cozy and such a great fit!  Yes.. I bought something leopard AND decorated a neutral Christmas tree.  Who even am I right now!?)  Ha. ;)

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

Multi Device Charging Station – This charging station has become a staple at our house!  So nice to have one central spot we can all charge our devices.  (I bought extra cords that worked for our needs!)

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

Screen Mom Screen Cleaner – Now that your devices are charged it’s time to keep them clean. :)  I love this screen cleaner and use it every day!

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

Magic Bullet Blender – You all know that I lack major cooking skills and to be honest, sometimes kitchen appliances scare me.  But this!  This cute little blender I can handle!  It’s so easy to use (my kids use it all the time too!).  So simple to toss in some fruit and make a quick smoothie for a snack or breakfast.  Addison loves to use it with this Pina Colada mix.  You just add ice and press the lid down to blend!

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

Capri Blue Candle – My love for this candle runs DEEP and I have more than I dared photograph!  But you all knew that. ;)  This candle and this candle are my favorites for Christmas!

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

My Amazing Blow Dry Secret &  Rose Glow Brightening Balm – These are the two things I seem to be reaching for every single morning!  My favorite dry shampoo (so great for adding volume and life!) and the Tula Brightening Balm is the best for brightening dark circles and puffiness under your eyes.  Perfect for bloggers who stay up way too late writing about favorite things and their eyes tell the story the next day. ;)

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

Moroccan Oil Shampoo & Conditioner – my all time favorite shampoo/conditioner after trying what felt like hundreds!  The set I linked would be a perfect Christmas gift because it comes with some of the Moroccan oil too.  I love using the oil when I straighten my hair.

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

T3 Curling Iron Set  &  T3 Cura Hair Dryer – I can’t talk about hair care without mentioning my all time favorite curling iron and blow dryer.  Once you’ve used T3 beauty tools you won’t want to stop!  I love the curling iron set with different barrel sizes because I use all three of them and I prefer the curling iron over the wand.  Just my personal preference!

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

The Compound Effect –  You guys!  This is my favorite book from 2019!  And I read so many.  I actually should say I listened to so many because I drive my kids around for 88% of my day.  Audible and podcasts have become my best friends. :)  I’m a sucker for time management/motivational books and I heard this was good, but the title (jumpstart your income, life, success) made me wonder if I would like it or not.  Oh my word.. I LOVED it!  I don’t think a book has ever motivated me so much in my life!  And it’s really not about making money (I feel like the title is misleading!).  It’s just about how the smallest choices we make can compound over time and have such a huge impact.   It’s about gratitude, living your life to the fullest, taking responsibility for everything in your life, setting good habits, etc.  I feel like everyone should read this book.  I’m making my kids listen to a few of the chapters!  And I made my husband read it and now my parents are reading it so we can discuss it over Thanksgiving break.  Because I’m nerdy like that. ;)  Just trust me.. read it!  And then tell me what you think. :)

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

Ugg Slippers & Chunky Wool & Jute Rug –  I LIVE in these slippers!  Honestly the coziest to slip on in the house.  I stocked up for gifts.  They come in lots of cute colors!  My family room rug is also a favorite!  I know if you read my blog you’re sick of hearing about it, but I can’t let a favorites post go by without mentioning it.  If you’re new to my blog and haven’t heard me go on and on about it yet, you can read more about it here.

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

I have the same rug in my dining room!  I love it THAT much. :)

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

(ribbed sweater/Madewell tote/AG jeans (on sale!)/similar boots/flocked tree)

Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Lite Circle Cardigan – If you aren’t going to get the Barefoot dreams blanket at least consider the cardigan!  It’s the coziest article of clothing you’ll ever own!  I have two of them (olive and stone) but there are so many fun shades to chose from.  I dress them up with jeans, but most of the time I wear them with pjs at home, or to run to the grocery store over my workout clothes or over my pjs to drop kids off at school.  You won’t want to take it off!

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

Simplicity, Patina Farm, Platters and Boards, The Gift of GatheringThe Home Edit

I love coffee table books!  I love to display them in my home and using them to decorate.  I also love a cozy evening at home flipping through a beautiful and inspiring book!  These 5 books are my favorites from Oct-Feb and each one would make a beautiful gift for someone who loves decorating, entertaining or organizing.  I’ll take them all thank you very much. :)

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

(Fall Kitchen)

Cutting boards – Couldn’t love them more!  They are always in my decor and I use them every time I entertain.

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

Wooden Dough Bowls – I also love dough bowls for decorating and the set I linked is a long time favorite!  I have each of the 3 sizes and there are endless possibilities of how you can use them in your home.

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

The dough bowl on the bottom left is the smallest size in that set and the one I use the most often.  I have several of them and no two look exactly alike!

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

Baskets – Baskets are another beloved item in my home and this set of Moroccan Woven Baskets is my all time favorite!  They are such perfect sizes and look beautiful next to a couch or chair or on a shelf.  The smallest size is perfect to hold some flowers or a plant or random items in your office.  I love giving them as gifts to friends.  Everyone can use a good basket. :)

2019 Favorite Things (Sunny Side Up)

Well!  I could certainly come up with more but I think I’ve covered most of my tried and true favorite things from 2019.  So much fun.  I would love to hear about a favorite on your list this year!

You can see the complete list of everyone who is sharing favorite things here on Melissas’s blog.  So many fun gift ideas!

Happy holiday planning, shopping, decorating and celebrating everyone!

Our Cozy Neutral Snowflake Christmas Tree

*affiliate links are used below
Christmas Tree Decorating (Sunny Side Up)

First tree is up and decorated!  We cleared our schedules, put on Christmas pj’s, blasted our Christmas music and got to work!  I look forward to our annual tree decorating party every year. :)  A few years ago my kids got upset because my perfectionism got the best of me and I “tweaked” our tree the day after we all decorated it.  (Guilty as charged.)  So last year we decorated the tree together and the day (and weeks) after I didn’t touch a thing.  Our reindeer Christmas tree stayed perfectly intact exactly how they decorated it.

This year was a different story!

Christmas Tree Decorating (Sunny Side Up)

{My striped joggers (so cozy and back in stock!), UGG slippers, Kole’s beloved robe}

We decided to try something new this year and create a mostly neutral tree.  Half way through our tree decorating we were all just laughing.  It looked AWFUL!  We kept adding things after Kenny snapped these pictures and it was like the more stuff we put on it.. the worse it looked.  Finally after over an hour of tree decorating my kids were all saying “mom.. can you just fix this tree tomorrow?  Do something else with it?  Can you make it better?”  I told them the tree could be saved!  We just had to keep working at it!  Never give up!  El said “good luck mom.. I need to go shower.”  Ad said “Love you mom, but this tree is sad.. I’m going upstairs to finish my homework.”  And Kole said “Can I turn on Goosebumps or do I have to go to bed?  If it’s bedtime I’ll keep decorating the tree.”

Oh how times have changed. ;)  We all called it a night and the next day (with my kids’ blessing!) I spent some time re-working our tree and came up with this..

Christmas Tree Decorating (Sunny Side Up)

I call it our “cozy neutral snowflake tree” and when the kids came home from school the next day and saw it they were so impressed.  Not that the decor is that amazing, but if you would have seen the “before” when we finished you’d know that this is definitely an improvement!  Ha.  To be honest, I really like our tree this year but I don’t LOVE it.  I miss the red!  I know it will feel better when I get the shelves and the rest of this room decorated, but this completely neutral Christmas tree is totally out of my comfort zone and I’m still adjusting!

Change is good right?  Maybe? :)

Christmas Tree Decorating (Sunny Side Up)

I absolutely love everything I put on the tree.  These are all favorite ornaments!  I just keep feeling like I need a pop of red in there somewhere. :)  A few ornaments are new, but a lot of them are ornaments I’ve had and used on other past trees.  If you’ve been with me for a while you probably recognize some of them!  This year I added the fun wood bead garland, this beautiful jeweled snowflake tree topper (I also ordered 5 of the jeweled snowflake ornaments that match and will add those as soon as they get here) and I added the adorable snowy house ornaments!

Christmas Tree Decorating (Sunny Side Up)

The house ornaments are my favorite because they have a round hole cut out in the bottom so you can set them on one of your tree lights and it lights up the little house.  Could they be any more charming!?  I love them. :)

Christmas Tree Decorating (Sunny Side Up)

My chunky knit tree skirt is also new this year and works so perfectly with my “cozy knit snowflake” theme.

Christmas Tree Decorating (Sunny Side Up)

Of course Christmas trees look the most amazing at night!  This creme, white and silver tree has such a calm feeling to it.. I’ve loved having it on in the evenings.

Christmas Tree Decorating (Sunny Side Up)

{Chunky Wool Jute Rug}

*For those of you asking questions about our family room rug I wrote more details about it HERE}

So pretty!  Like I said.. it’s very neutral and I’m still adjusting to a tree with no red!  But overall it’s a fun change and I know some greenery and decor on my shelves will help pull it together for me.

How to attach garland to a fireplace mantel (Sunny Side Up)

It’s definitely working well with the fireplace decor I’ve got going so far!  (Details on how I attached this garland and mantel sources are in this post if you missed it!)  I’m still debating adding a few pops of red with other pillows/accessories.  We’ll see!  I keep getting distracted with other spaces and need to just finish this one.

I’ve included as many sources as I could find for this tree at the end of my post!  A few of them are similar items that would give you the same look if something I have is sold out.

Just for fun here is a look back at past years that I’ve decorated this same tree with my kids.  Such a fun tradition.  Do you decorate a tree with your kids every year?

Ad dropped and broke an ornament right when this picture was taken and it’s one of my favorites because of the look on her face!

How to attach garland to a fireplace mantel (and other fun updates!)

*affiliate links below
How to attach garland to a fireplace mantel (Sunny Side Up)

{How to attach garland to a fireplace mantel}

Ok.. this is totally an “in progress” picture.  My mantel isn’t quite finished, but I’m loving the direction it’s headed!  I wasn’t going to post a pic of it yet, but when I shared a few progress clips on IG stories I got so many questions that I thought it would be easier to just explain how I got this look here on my blog.  Seriously doesn’t this greenery look SO real!?  I could not be more impressed with it.  It’s this faux cedar garland but it unfortunately sold out!  Below are some other beautiful garland options that I love!

First question: “How many garlands did you use to create this look?”  I used five!  But remember.. this fireplace mantel in my family room is HUGE.  It’s so big.  Too big!  I always struggle to decorate it.  For a standard mantel I would recommend buying at least two garlands so that they can meet in the middle and drape off the sides.  I would buy three if you want to lay one more on top to give it a fuller look like I did.

Second question: “How did you attach the garlands to hang like this?”

How to attach garland to a fireplace mantel (Sunny Side Up)

I used white command hooks that support 5 pounds (larger hooks just to be safe!) and green vine twist ties.

How to attach garland to a fireplace mantel (Sunny Side Up)

I snapped some quick cell phone pics tonight to show you!  I used three of the command hooks and placed them on the top of my mantle towards the front.  One in the middle and one close to each end of the mantel.  *Sidenote.. my candles looked too short so I set them on a cutting board to elevate them!  I told you this huge mantel is tricky for me. ;)

How to attach garland to a fireplace mantel (Sunny Side Up)

I just laid the first two garlands across the mantel (they met in the middle and draped off the sides), but the second two garlands I wanted to hang down a little lower so I used the command hooks to hold them.  (Then I obviously covered the white command hooks with greenery.. easy to hide!)

How to attach garland to a fireplace mantel (Sunny Side Up)

Then I used the green twist ties to tie the two garlands together in a couple of spots.  After the four garlands were attached, I laid one more across the top to give it an even fuller look.

{Brass Candle Holders/Similar Stockings/Flameless Wax Candles/Faux Cedar Garland/Wood Bead Garland}

I love how it turned out!  And I know.  Buying multiple garlands is pricey (I have a few more I’m adding in another room!), but I feel like for me they were such a great investment.  Now I can use them them year after year in different ways.  I can decorate for Christmas three months early if I want!  And keep it all up through February!  Not that I would.. but it doesn’t sound half bad. ;)

How to attach garland to a fireplace mantel (Sunny Side Up)

This pic above is of my stairs about 4 years ago at Christmas with real garland.  I LOVE the look of real greenery but HATE the mess.  I just can’t handle the dry needles all over the place two weeks later!  Drives me crazy.  This was the last year I messed with it and I’ve been looking for good faux options ever since.  This faux cedar garland is the answer to my Christmas greenery prayers.  Ha. ;)

(Btw.. I always hang our past Christmas cards on my stairs.  A fun tradition some of you might remember I started years ago!  You can see more details about it in this post.)

In other fun holiday news I got our guest bedroom Christmas sheets on and still love this look I created last year for our guests!  My cute reindeer sheets were from PB but I found almost identical sheets for such a great price!  I also found some other fun Christmas sheets on-line I’ll link below.  I’m in love with these little green pine tree sheets and debating them for Kole’s room this year!

Kenny and I grabbed some Mexican food and enjoyed an un-interrupted conversation that will hopefully sustain us until we can talk again next Saturday night.  Sad but true!  We are going a million miles a minute in this stage of life with our kids.  I know many of you can relate!  But it’s all good because LIGHTS ARE UP ON THE PALM TREES!  It’s officially Christmas in San Diego.  Christmas lights on the Palm Trees and a fun dinner with my husband.  Those are the two things that are going on my gratitude card for today. :)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone!

Thanksgiving Day Table and Ideas

Thanksgiving Day Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

Want to know what I’m grateful for?  That it’s Friday. :)  We made it to the end of the week!  I hope it was a good one for you!  I have to say that I’m a tad on the tired side.  I think all of the Christmas decorating in-between all of the every day life stuff wore me right out this week.  Very excited about an upcoming slow Saturday morning to recover!  I’m also excited to get our gratitude jar back in action again.  I pulled it out today and we’re going to write down things we are grateful for during the rest of the month and read them at Thanksgiving.  This has become such a fun tradition!  I found two other cute inexpensive gratitude jar options here and here if you want to start this with your family.  I always tell my kids to not write down the standard big things (health, family, etc.).  Obviously important to be grateful for those things, but I want them to really think about something unique and specific that stood out to them during the day.  I’m hoping this forces them to LOOK for little things to be grateful for each day.  Those small moments of gratitude are there if they just look. :)

Thanksgiving Day Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

Anyone else get to Thanksgiving and have a plethora of pumpkins hanging around?  In past years I’ve taken the pumpkins off of my Fall mantel, porch, etc. and made a fun tablescape with them.  I’ve done this for Thanksgiving dinner when we’ve stayed home and on the years we were traveling for Thanksgiving I just had a fun Fall lunch with girl friends!

Thanksgiving Day Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

I order and pick up salads and soup and nobody seems to notice that I didn’t spend hours baking because the table looks so cute and cozy.  My trade secret. ;)

Thanksgiving Day Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

I thought I’d share this fun tablescape again if any of you are planning on hosting Thanksgiving or a random Fall lunch/dinner.  All sources are at the bottom of the post and most items including my favorite Fall placemats are on sale!

Another trade secret of mine?  I’ve gotten really good at making store bought desserts look homemade.  I’m seriously known thoughout the land in our area as having the best “homemade” chocolate chip cookies ever.  My girls’ friends think I’m amazing!  Hello.. they are Toll House!  I just pop store bought dough in my oven and bam.  I’m a legend.  I told one of Ellie’s friends once when she was raving about my cookies that they were just Toll House and she said “well we’ve made those before at our house and they don’t taste as good as yours do..”  Ha.  That’s because I serve them on a cute plate.

It’s all about the presentation my friends. ;)

Thanksgiving Day Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

Here’s another quick and easy store bought dessert that I’ve shared before.

Thanksgiving Day Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

Pour hot fudge over a cheesecake…

Then chop up nuts and Reeces to place on top!

Thanksgiving Day Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

Wa-la!  Looks fancy right?  Takes 5 minutes.  You could get technical and make your own cheesecake.. but why?

Thanksgiving Day Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

Love always, chef Erin.

Thanksgiving Day Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

I rounded up some fun things below to help make your Thanksgiving feel extra special this year!  Most of these items are on sale right now and I’ve ordered some for our Thanksgiving meal.  Bring on the family, food, cozy pjs and Hallmark Christmas specials!  Can’t wait. :)

Thanksgiving Day Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

1 – Cutest Turkey Salt and Pepper Shakers!

2 – I love this antique silver serving platter for the turkey or other special dishes.. on sale for such a steal right now!

3 – These Fall napkins are beautiful and come highly recommended!  I also love this cute set.

4 – My pumpkin plates are on sale!  I shared them in this post if you want a closer look.

5 – I love this set of gold flatware (gold is so beautiful for a Thanksgiving table!).  This set also looks like a great option.

6 – This “Turkey on the Table” book and activity set is darling!  Another fun way to start a Thanksgiving tradition sharing gratitude.  Would be especially fun on a table with young kids. :)

7 – I just ordered a set of these fun Fall Thanksgiving placemats!  So cute because they have different activities for the kids plus they can write what they are grateful for and color them.  I’m always in charge of setting the table and entertaining kids while the rest of the adults in our family help my mom cook Thanksgiving dinner.  No idea why.. ;)  but these will be perfect to entertain cousins while we are waiting to eat.

8 – Love this turkey serving bowl for soup or gravy!

9 – Another fun thankful jar option.  I love this one with paper leafs to write on too!

10 – These rose gold mercury glass pumpkins are on major markdown and so are these cute faux pumpkins I always display in my kitchen!

Fall Wrap Up

Ok.. massive picture dump today! I feel like I have so much to share with you all lately my head might explode. FUN decorating is happening at my house for Christmas at the moment and I can’t wait to share it all with you soon! But first I have some pics from the past two weeks to share.  A trip, some fun home decor, a little fashion, a great cookie recipe. Basically I’m all over the place in this one so you’ve been warned. ;)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Back track quickly to Halloween.  I asked Kole what he wanted to dress up as and he told me “I wish I could just wear my robe and be comfy all day.”  (If that doesn’t give away that he belongs to me I don’t know what does! Ha. I honestly LOVE the recent time change for that very reason!  I can put on my pjs even earlier.)  I told him we could totally make that happen and went on a costume hunt looking for anything that would work with a black and red checkered robe!

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

{Fall Porch}

So happy late Halloween from the Big Bad Wolf, Little Red Riding Hood and .. her grandpa?  Our fairytale is tweaked ever so slightly. ;)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Love the outtakes from our quick 2 minute photo shoot.  Let’s just adjust that mustache.

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Kole could not stop laughing at Kenny’s wolf costume!  My girls were cracking up at it too.. the nose on it was just funny looking.  This man is such a good sport.

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

I was thrilled when I found costumes that went with his beloved robe so perfectly!

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Do you all remember when I gave this to him last year before Christmas?  He has honestly LIVED in it for the past year.  It’s so funny to me that he loves it so much!  But I get it.  Softest robe ever!

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

I put in a dedicated hook for it in his bedroom between his closet and bathroom.  :)  I also bought him the same robe in another fun pattern to give him this year for Christmas.  It’s this Tucker an Tate Hooded Plush Robe and it’s honestly so soft and warm and cozy.  Read the reviews and you’ll see why Kole is obsessed with his!  I’m loving the patterns they came out with for girls this year too!  If my girls were younger I’d be giving them the pink buffalo check or the red Christmas tree robe for Christmas.  FUN gift idea if you have little kids!

This pic of my kids watching Rudolph is a favorite from last year. :)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

We made a quick trip to SLC the weekend before Halloween to surprise my sister’s husband for his 40th birthday.  It was so funny!  My sister told him and the kids that there would be an activity Saturday morning so they didn’t plan anything else.. something that would take the whole day.  They kept asking questions.. “Do we need to wear certain clothes?  Will it be cold?  Will we like it?”  My sister was laughing because they were all dreading this “activity” she had planned!  Our flight left San Diego at 4 am so we got to her house around 9:30 and they were all still in pjs.  She told them to head to the mailbox to see dad’s gift before they got dressed for the “activity” and we were all waiting at the mail box!  Too much fun!  They kids were SO excited when they saw us.. jumping up and down and Shawn was cracking up when I yelled “Surprise!  We’re the activity!”  We have so much fun with my sister and her family and loved surprising them!  We had a fun day planned.

Favorite Christmas Decor (Sunny Side Up)

{K’s shoes/K’s vest/my sweater/jeans/similar boots here or here}

First a quick trip to Gardner’s Village.  The weather was beautiful during the day!  Crisp and cold and the leaves in SLC are stunning this time of year.  Got to wear my new favorite sweater I shared in my last post. :)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

We go to Gardner’s Village to see all of the witches at the witch festival!  My kids have fun memories of this activity every Fall when we visit my sister and her family.

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

They have a fun scavenger hunt for kids to see how many witches you can find (they are all the place and dressed up so funny).  We ate and shopped and enjoyed some fun Fall activities and then went to my sister’s house.

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Then that evening we gave Shawn our gift.. tickets for everyone to go to the football game.  Go UTES!  This was supposed to be a party for Shawn after all. :)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Game was fun but I FROZE to death.  It got so cold and San Diego has made me a cold weather wimp!  This pic made me laugh because my eyes look like they are glazed over.  I was struggling.. ha!  I love my green coat but I need something warmer this year.  Below are the coats I’ve been looking at and considering!

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

The next morning it snowed!  So much fun!  My kids were loving it.

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

{my blue crewneck sweater (so cute and comes in lots of colors!)/AG jeans/similar wedge booties}

It melted fast but was such a fun way to end our time in SLC!  We let the kids all hang out together at the house and the 4 of us got lunch together before it was time to leave.  A quick trip but so worth it!  We wish we all lived closer to each other but have learned we just have to prioritize time together like this throughout the year.

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

I snapped some pics of my sister’s house quick with my phone while I was there.. it was so cute and cozy for Fall!

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Her style is a little different from mine.. more modern and moody.. but I love it!

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Happy 40th Shawn!  I actually brought my sister and her husband together years ago.  Cute story for another day.. they forever owe me. ;)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Car and I spent a lot of time sitting here in front of her cozy fireplace catching up!  I love how she had a seat made for it and added pillows!  It’s so inviting.  Thinking I want to do that for mine because our marble is so cold and hard to sit on.

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

She had her Halloween pics on a string in front of her kitchen window and I loved it!  Such a fun idea!  This would be a cute way to also display Christmas pictures or cards this season.

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

Ok.. totally switching gears because this random post isn’t long enough. ;)  Addison and I made some pumpkin cookies and they were so quick and easy!  Thought I’d share the recipe quick if you’re interested.  Ad has a severe egg allergy so baked good are usually a hard NO for her.  (Makes birthday parties rough!)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

This pumpkin cookie recipe has only THREE ingredients and no eggs!  Right up our alley. :)

Fall Wrap Up (Sunny Side Up)

They didn’t bake quite as fluffy without the eggs and vanilla but still tasted really good considering!  If you don’t have egg allergy issues in your family I’d try this pumpkin cookie recipe below.  They are delicious and still so easy! (We followed this minus the egg and vanilla.)

  • 1 box spice cake mix
  • 1 15 oz can of pumpkin puree
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • chocolate chips (the more the better) ;)

*Bake at 375° for 10 or so minutes.

Ok.. last but not least I’ve had so many questions lately coming in about artificial Christmas trees!  I get mine all over.  I’ve had trees from Balsam Hill, Wayfair, Pottery Barn, Home Depot, Tai Pan, etc.  I rounded up a few that look amazing below if you’re looking for a new tree this year!

Enjoy your day!  I’m off to finish adding greenery to my mantel.. it’s looking so pretty!  Can’t wait to share it soon. :)

Christmas Decor I’m using this year!

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

{Fall Kitchen} *affiliate links used below

Happy November friends!  Let’s get this party started!  I spent Friday and Saturday taking down most of my Fall decor.  Good-bye sweet bats!  Enjoy that all important meeting. ;)

Favorite Christmas Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Then it was time.  Finally time!  Time to turn on my Christmas music, light my favorite Fir candle and bring all of the REALLY fun stuff out. :)  I was pulling out new Christmas items and old favorites I’m using to decorate with this year and thought I’d snap a few pictures of the new items you’ll see popping up in my decor this year.  Some of these items are selling out and some are on sale this weekend so I wanted to get this up fast for you!  I know a lot of people like to hold off Christmas decorating until after Thanksgiving, but I feel like more and more people are decorating early this year!  Have any of you noticed that?  Especially with Thanksgiving falling so late in November.  I’ve been decorating for Christmas right after Halloween my whole married life (20+ years) so I’m happy to see it’s starting to become more common.

Makes me feel a little less crazy. ;)

Anyone else getting an early start?  Here are a few items I’m really excited about this year that won’t last long!

Favorite Christmas Decor (Sunny Side Up)

I found some cozy cream Ugg stockings marked down last year after Christmas and can’t find identical socks on-line but these stockings are very similar!  So are these stockings.  I have to say that I love so many things in Rachel Parcell’s new Christmas collection!  Especially the Bobble Knit items. :)  I splurged on this beautiful chunky knit tree skirt to go with my stockings and it’s marked down this weekend!  I also picked up this fun striped red pop pom throw to match my red striped stockings.  These similar red striped stockings are on sale this weekend too!

Favorite Christmas Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Of course my favorite fa-la-la banner will be back in full force. :)  I’m also so excited about these beautiful marble and gold stocking holders and they just sold out!  Target has some that are similar and PB has a beautiful all gold set.  I’m using this fun wood bead garland on my family room tree this year and might combine it with another garland.. still playing around with that!

Favorite Christmas Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Ok.. you guys!  This faux cedar garland is honestly the closest I’ve seen to the real deal!  I’m using it in several spots this year.  I got mine at Nordstrom and it sold out crazy fast, but I found the exact same garland at Anthro!  I have a feeling it won’t last long there either so don’t hesitate if you want it.  I would recommend at least two for most fireplace mantels, tables, etc.  It’s 6 feet long but always looks best having some hanging down over each of the sides. :)  The cute OH DEER mat I also bought at Nordstrom sold out too!  Like yesterday.  But I found it on Amazon for you guys so all is well.  For a few days anyway. ;)  I’m using more white on my family room tree this year and picked up some of these adorable snowy house ornaments.  Two styles have sold out but one is still in stock!  Also this adorable house that lights up is back in stock (I used it on my living room mantel last year).

Favorite Christmas Decor (Sunny Side Up)

A few of my favorite trees!  This Pre-Lit Alpine tree is small but the branches are so realistic!   I’m also so excited to use these Pre-lit Snowy Pine Trees.  They are just beautiful all lit up.  And last but not least, these Light Up Birch Trees are on sale this weekend!  I bought them a few years ago when they first came out and loved them so much that I picked up a few more last year.  I have fun plans for them again.. they are favorites for sure!

So those are new favorites you’ll see in my home this year!  I know most of these items will be gone in a week so I thought I’d give you all a sneak peek now. :)

Favorite Christmas Decor (Sunny Side Up)

I’m also using these beautiful Eucalyptus wreaths again.  So pretty hanging with some festive holiday ribbon!

Favorite Christmas Decor (Sunny Side Up)

And I’m going to use this pretty Mercury Garland in a few new spots too.  I ordered more after using it last year because it was so beautiful!

Favorite Christmas Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Also I had so many of you sending messages and e-mails about how bummed you were that my new red plaid rug sold out!  I had a feeling it wouldn’t last long!  I did some digging and found it on-line in two other stores.  You can also order it here at Birch Lane, or here at Wayfair.

Act fast and you’re welcome. ;)

Favorite Christmas Decor (Sunny Side Up)

{K’s shoes/K’s vest/my sweater/jeans/similar boots here or here}

I was going to share this pic in my next post but this beautiful Puff Sleeve sweater I’m loving is also selling out in some sizes and it’s so cute for the holidays!  It comes in lots of colors but you all knew I’d snag the green. :)  I told you I’m especially obsessed with all things bobble knit at the moment!  The sleeves are so fun and it’s honestly so comfortable and warm and just a great fit. Trust me on this one.  You’ll love this sweater!  I know you will. :)

Happy holiday decorating, planning, shopping or whatever it is you’re doing to prepare for the next two months!  I’ll be jumping back to all things Thanksgiving at some point but for now.. Michael Bublé and I are glued at the hip. (Sorry Kenny.. I’ll be back into you after the holidays.)  ;)

Cozy Christmas – New Favorites!

*This post is sponsored by Walmart and affiliate links are used. All opinions and product selections are my own!

You guys!  Our house is so seasonally confused right now.  Ha!  I have pumpkins and bats up in my kitchen, Christmas starting in our mudroom/family room and Summer decor still lingering in our powder bathroom/living room.  Ellie is having friends over for Halloween and I’m a little worried that they might walk in and think they’ve entered the Twilight Zone.  Either that or they won’t even notice because.. teens. ;)

Cozy holiday decor (Sunny Side Up)

So I know it’s Halloween week but ahhhh!  I’m so excited about today’s post!  Walmart has released some new holiday items this year that are honestly so perfect!  Cute and cozy and such amazing quality for the price!  I ordered quite a few things on-line to check out thinking I would just keep a few items but I can’t send anything back!  I was playing around with all of the fun pillows and throws I ordered and decided I’d let you help me choose.  And if you say keep it all.. well.. I’ll have no choice but to oblige. :)  Below I’ve styled my mudroom bench three different ways.  Each of these combos would be so cute over any chair or couch or bench for the holidays!

Cozy holiday decor (Sunny Side Up)

Combo #1!  K.. this Modern Braided Fur Blanket is honestly a dream!  So soft and cozy!  I’m definitely keeping this, but it will be parked on my couch corner where I sit every night.  I’ve already claimed it as my companion during all Hallmark Christmas movies this year.

Cozy holiday decor (Sunny Side Up)

Looks so cute with red doesn’t it?  This Red Knit Pillow and the Sweater Knit Tassel Pillow are just FUN for the holidays.

Cozy holiday decor (Sunny Side Up)

Is this making anyone else so beyond ready for all that is to come!?  I can hear Michael Bublé in the background.  He’s singing It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and my fresh pine candle is burning and the house is clean and decorated and I’m sitting next to the lights of my Christmas tree humming along without a care in the world.  Well.. there are cares, but in this fantasy I’m choosing to ignore them.  :)

Cozy holiday decor (Sunny Side Up)

Combo #2!  Isn’t this Red and White Snowflake blanket adorable!?  One of my trees might be heading in a snowflake direction (I’ll share more details on it soon!) so I HAD to have this blanket!  I love the ice-skates and people skiing and red tassels on it too.

Cozy holiday decor (Sunny Side Up)

I paired it with this Ombre Fur Pillow and Neutral Fringe Pillow.  Seriously.. these pillows are so nice.  I can’t get over the quality for the price I paid for them.

Cozy holiday decor (Sunny Side Up)

Combo #3 – This Kniteed Burgandy Blanket is a Christmas staple.  Perfect throw that looks great over any couch, chair, bench or at the bottom of a bed.  It has a beautiful texture and the long tassels could not be more perfect.  In my humble opinion. :)

Cozy holiday decor (Sunny Side Up)

I paired it with the large Ombre pillow and the cutest Red Ticking Stripe Pillow.

Cozy holiday decor (Sunny Side Up)

This combo might be my favorite!  Because stripes.  But no wait.. I love #1!  And #2.

Ok.  You’ve all convinced me.  I’m keeping it all.

Your work here is done. ;)

Honestly though I’ve saved the best for last.  Want to see something else I’m LOVING and so excited about for the holidays this year!?

Cozy holiday decor (Sunny Side Up)

How much fun is this beautiful Plaid Area Rug!?  LOVE the pattern.  LOVE the traditional Christmas colors.  And I LOVE that it’s honestly one of the softest rugs in my home.  It laid flat so nicely (no turned up corners!) and my kids have all each commented multiple times about how soft it is and can we please keep it up all year because they like it so much better than the rug I usually have in this space.  Ha.  I might have to move to a year long red color scheme because we will all be so sad to take it down after Christmas!  I haven’t styled my table yet (I mean.. let’s at least go trick-or-treating and take the bats down first) ;) but this cute green fir tree is working until I get around to it and will make a fun new addition to a console table or mantel at some point.  YEA!  I have so many fun ideas and can’t wait to start implementing them all!  I told Kenny to get ready for the marathon I train for all year.  Christmas decorating baby!  BRING IT ON. ;)

Links to all of these fun holiday favorites are below!  If you love any of them I would seriously snag them fast because I have no doubt every one of these items will sell out fast.  You can see other cute holiday items from Walmart here.  I also love this plaid buffalo blanket, this white loop throw pillow, these Sherpa Queen/Full blankets (would be so cute for holiday bedroom decor!) this marble serving platter (perfect for entertaining and just $13!) and isn’t this black and white checkered accent chair fun!?  Honestly Walmart has stepped up their game with home decor BIG time.  So many cute things!

Now back to rounding up all things Halloween.  I know I’ve got the accessories for Kole’s costume somewhere.  Are they next to the Spring tulips in my living room?  The mums and pumpkins on my porch?  Or the Christmas throws in the mudroom?

Good thing my family loves me. ;)

Latest at the house

We made it to Friday! Hands down my favorite day of the week. I love the anticipation of the weekend. So much possibility! Knowing it’s coming is often even better than when it’s actually here. ;) We have some really fun plans this weekend though so I’m especially excited to be finishing up a busy week.  More on that later!  Today I’m sharing a few things we’ve been up to around the house this week.

*affiliate links used

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

Feeling Halloween ready!  Our Shiplap Display wall is decked with Halloween pictures again and it’s always so fun to see past costumes.  My kids still love this so much!  (If you’re new here you can find more details all about this fun shiplap wall and how I decorate it through the seasons HERE.)

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

Kole is especially excited about our wall this year because I added some bats.  Yes.. Halloween decor INSIDE our house.  Who would have thought. ;)  Truth be told I was feeling a little guilty because I went with a Fall themed porch this year instead of the Happy Halloween porch Kole looks forward to so I added the bats in an attempt to make up for it.  #momoftheyear  #attempt3,548

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

I used these Martha Stewart Silhouettes and just stuck them up with my long time magic weapon.. wait for it.. painters tape.

If you knew what I was going to say bless you for being such a loyal reader. ;)

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

The bats were such a huge hit with my little buddy that I told him he could help me add more to the kitchen.  As you can see bat folding requires some pretty deep concentration.  Ha.

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

The two of us may have gone a little bat crazy.

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

They are basically all over my kitchen at the moment.  Across the fridge and freezer..

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

up the cabinets..

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

all over the range hood..

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

and up more cabinets to the right of it.

Shiplap Display Wall (Sunny Side Up)

Kole is in 7th heaven and wants to leave them up through Christmas.

But I have a feeling that on Nov. 1st they’ll have to fly off to their cave for an urgent bat meeting.  If they miss it they could lose their wings and that would be tragic.

#momoftheyearisoverrated

Teen Room (Sunny Side Up)

In other news I’m finally prioritizing Ellie’s bedroom re-fresh!  I mentioned forever ago that we were planning on updating her room and I’ve ordered a few things for it already, but until now it wasn’t on my urgent to-do list.  There are always so many other urgent to-do’s swirling around, but she turns 16 in January and I really want it finished before her 16th birthday so it’s time to make it priority #1 around here!  When we moved into our new home (6 years ago this month!) she begged me for purple walls.  I wanted to paint them grey, but gave her the purple of her dreams and she has loved her bright, colorful bedroom.

It makes me both happy and sad that now she’s over the purple and wants her room painted grey.  Happy because hello.. I’m all about grey paint. :)  But sad because she’s growing up.  I had a moment moving her pandas and other stuffed animals out of her room knowing that most of them wouldn’t be going back.  A huge lump swelled up in my throat and my eyes filled with water so quickly I suddenly couldn’t see out of them.  It’s hard!  I really do love each stage with my kids, but it’s difficult saying a final good-bye to the end of an era and that’s exactly how this room re-fresh for my oldest daughter feels to me.

Maybe deep down that’s why I’ve been putting it off this year.

Teen Room (Sunny Side Up)

Seeing grey paint samples up on her wall the next day cheered me up immensely (have I mentioned before that I love grey paint?). ;)  I put up some of our main grey (my number one favorite paint throughout our home – you can download the formula for it HERE) and then I also put up the same color at 50% and then at 25%.  El and I both wanted a light grey for her room, but the 25% was a little too light because her room gets SO much sunlight with full french doors and windows on one entire wall.  The 50% was the winner!  (Hard to really see the true colors in this lousy cell phone pic I snapped quick!)

Teen Room (Sunny Side Up)

My painters put up the first coat today and it looks so good!  This cell pic also looks a little darker than it is in person.  The paint is exactly what we wanted.. a beautiful, soft grey.  I’ll share the room on my blog when it’s finished (along with pics of her room before) and I’ll be sharing progress along the way on IG stories if you want to follow along!

Teen Room (Sunny Side Up)

We moved everything from El’s room into our playroom so that’s a fun mess at the moment!  To add to the chaos I also started pulling out Christmas stuff today!  Oh yes.. I’m going there. ;)  I have a holiday post I’m sharing soon and need to get started on it so out came the boxes.  You could say we’ve seen cleaner days at my house!  The chaos in my home pretty much matches the chaos going on inside my head with so many projects looming.

But it’s all fun chaos.  So bring it on. :)

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Carmel By the Sea and a major planning session

Last weekend I made a trip to Carmel by the Sea to meet my friend Gina.  She used to live in San Diego but moved a few years ago and we were missing each other and wanted a get together to catch up!  This was my first time visiting Carmel and I can’t believe I haven’t been there before.  A quick one hour flight from San Diego and it was the cutest little beach town!  I took a few pics with my phone to share with you all..

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

{Wearing my new favorite sweater from yesterday’s fashion post and wedge booties!  If you don’t have a pair of wedge booties they are perfect shoes for days you are doing more walking.  This pair is similar to mine, so cute and on sale!}

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

You can walk everywhere in the main area of Carmel by the Sea and it’s honestly the most charming, quaint little town!

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

All of the shops and restaurants and buildings look like they are straight out of a picture book.

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

I was in cottage heaven and felt like I was walking around a Hallmark movie set!

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

If there is fudge nearby.. I will find it. :)

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

But my favorite?  The shops with all things Christmas!

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

So much fun.  The restaurants were amazing too.  Beautiful outdoor dining where you can just eat and linger and talk.

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

Even the doors were adorable and I wish I would have taken more pics and captured it all even better but I honestly wanted to just live in the moment exploring such a fun new place and catching up with a close friend.

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

{Similar camo pjs}

Our room was just like the city.. cozy and quaint and Gina and I were so excited to head back to our room both nights we were there to just talk and catch up and to plan!  Yes.. you heard me right.  We are so nerdy that way, but it’s honestly one thing I love the most about Gina.  She is just like me and gets so excited about the same geeky things I do.  Before she moved we loved getting together to plan.  (I wrote a post all about one of our planning sessions here.)  Kenny was teasing me before I left for my trip when I was talking to her on the phone saying sarcastically..  “are you two planning your time to plan?”

Why yes.. yes we are. :)

We pulled out our planners and I spread out on the floor and she spread out on the couch and we were so productive!  These are a few things we stayed up late discussing..

– our favorite planners/ways to plan (we both love our lists!)

– podcasts we love listening to, book we’ve read and loved, people we love following on IG

– systems to stay on top of laundry and housework

– routines we can set up that make things more efficient and easier at home (talked about things we each get “stuck” on and how to improve them)

– morning routines and how to make ours better

– how to make better use of the time we have to work on our business stuff so that we can be more present when our kids are home

– things we are doing now that can be deleted, done better or faster or turned over to someone else

Anyway.. you get the picture!  We seriously have the best conversations and crack up through them all because the funny thing is how we love to make lists and brainstorm ideas and make grand plans but the execution of it all seems to be the problem for both of us.  I sent her a text Monday morning after our trip that basically said “Well I’m off to a great start!  Kenny had to suddenly leave out of town, El got sick and is staying home from school and I ate Doritos that I found in the car for breakfast on my way driving Ad and Kole to school because we all had such a crazy morning.  Day one: morning routine out the window.”

Ha!  Life.  But I’m happy to say that I regrouped and today went much smoother. :)

Honestly I feel so much better after this weekend for two reasons.  One.. it’s always so good to step out of your routine (even if it’s just for one night!) and have a change of scenery and do something fun with a friend.  I can’t stress the importance of this enough!  It always makes such a huge difference for me with my overall happiness and mood.  And two.. talking with someone else about your challenges/struggles/plans/systems/dreams can make a world of difference.  Hearing advice from someone who isn’t in the thick of the day to day like you are is so refreshing and can make you see things in a new light.  We both walked away from the trip with so many fun new ideas to implement and feeling so good after spending time laughing, shopping, eating out and planning together.  It’s just nice to take a break and have fun isn’t it?  Life is too short to not enjoy it along the way.

I would love to hear what you’re working on or planning or struggling with or wanting more info. on in the comments!  I always love sharing things that are working for me around here if you’re interested.

Carmel by the Sea (Sunny Side Up)

Good-bye beautiful Carmel!  Two days with you was just what the Dr. ordered. :)

Happy Monday everyone!  It’s a new week and I’m excited to share some fun things I’ve been wearing lately with you all!  Fall is hands down my favorite clothes season and always has been because I love nothing more than a great pair of jeans, a cute sweater and stylish boots.

With pumpkin accessories galore of course. ;)

This Dolman Sleeve sweater is beautiful!  A new favorite that I’ve seriously worn twice a week since I got it.  Really soft, comes in lots of colors and I love the neckline.  It’s not a super long sweater, so I like it best with these high waisted jeans.  (These jeans are SO flattering btw if you need a good pair of dark jeans and they are on sale at the moment!)

Who doesn’t love a cute pumpkin spice tee this time of year!?  October staple.

Ok you guys.. CUTEST block stripe cardigan and I found it on Amazon for such a steal!  It looks just like the Madewell cardigans that are close to $100.  (Like this cardigan that I also love.  The more expensive Madewell cardis are a tad softer and drape a little better, but not a huge difference for the price.)  This one from Amazon comes in lots of color combos too.  Really excited about it. :)

Fall Fashion (Sunny Side Up)

This Colorblock Crewneck Sweater is so cute for Fall.  My friends were teasing me for getting it because I just cleaned out my closet and gave them all a bunch of clothes and 80% of my tops were green!  Ha.  I can’t help it.  I love green clothes.

Exhibit B.  Another fun green top. :)

Exhibit C.  More green.  Ok.. enough evidence to last a life time. ;)  But if I was FORCED to pick a favorite of my new sweaters so far this Fall the Coziest Yarn Colorblock Sweater would be the winner.  SO soft, SO comfy and I love the casual look of the grey sleeves.  (It comes in one other color combo too.)  If I had to name a sweater Erin it would be this one.  We are in love and plan to stay close for quite a while. :)

I’m also loving this black structured top!  It comes in at the waist and is so flattering but isn’t at all too tight or fitted.  Really cute sleeves too.  It has been so great having this lighter pair of jeans in my wardrobe.  Most of my jeans are a dark wash but these cute Paige jeans look so much better with my black and navy tees/sweaters.

Another recent Amazon find I’ve been loving is this fleece hoodie sweatshirt.  It’s so warm and soft and looks great with leggings or jeans.  I love wearing it to take my kids to school in the morning, throwing it on over my workout clothes, or just wearing it when I’m not in the mood to get that cleaned up.  Which if I’m being honest is most days around here. :)

And last but certainly not least is this cute Game Day sweatshirt.  So fun to put on for weekend football!  Which is going 24/7 at our house this time of year.  My husband is so happy when football is on that it puts all of us in a good mood and makes me love weekends in the Fall even more.  This sweatshirt is especially great because it’s team neutral.  I tend to change my mind pretty easily about who I’m rooting for because I just don’t care that much analyze each team so thourougly so this sweatshirt is right up my alley. ;)
