Kitchen Organization Tips

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

{faux pink peonies/white jars/cutting boards here, here & similar here/navy rugs/marble tray/faux plant here & here/silver pendants/gray vase}

Alright.. how are we doing when it comes to the organization challenge?  Keeping up?  Getting behind?  Never started?  Ha.  That’s ok!  Take a minute and print off your checklist and join us this week!  We are organizing our kitchens – woot woot!  My kitchen was mostly organized for years and then when Covid hit and my kids’ activities stopped last spring I finally organized the lingering messy spots and shared the entire space on my blog.  Whew!  That was a workout. ;)  It was so much organization to share that I had to break my kitchen down into 3 posts.  I’m going to share a lot of the same pictures today with some kitchen organization tips, but if you haven’t seen those posts they do a better job of sharing EVERYTHING including where things are located.  Lots of tips for organization but also some ideas if you are building/renovating/remodeling a kitchen this year.  I hope my posts are helpful!

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

{flour/sugar canisters/similar marble & wood cheese board/similar bowl/faux plant/gingham bowls/Kitchen-aid Pistachio mixer/white terracotta jar/pink peonies}

These kitchen decor pics are from last Spring and I’ve tweaked a few things this year but I’ll share that later in a kitchen decor post.  For today we are focusing on all things organization!  Sidenote – really, truly, if you are behind with this challenge that’s ok!  I am too!  Ha.  I’m still finishing up my main floor laundry room but my kitchen is organized so I can work on my laundry room this week.  If you need to finish laundry or bathroom stuff do that and circle back to kitchens at the end of the challenge or during another week (if the room for that week is already organized or doesn’t take as long).  Just whatever you do don’t give up and stop!  Progress is progress no matter how small it is!

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Tackle kitchen cupboards and drawers just like we did in our bathrooms.  Open the messy cupboard and gasp.

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Pull every single item out.  Vacuum/wash out the cupboard/drawer.  Toss/donate as much as you possibly can!

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Then put the items you really love/use often back in an organized way.  Then we pause and listen for the singing angels. ;)

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

It’s a good feeling to have your kitchen looking clean when the cupboards/drawers are closed.

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

It’s an even better feeling to have the kitchen really clean when the cupboards/drawers are open.

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

I have a lot more space in this kitchen than I did in previous kitchens but honestly that makes it harder for me to keep it organized!  The way to truly be organized is to have less stuff.  I’ve found that more cupboards just get filled with more clutter that we don’t really need.

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Be ruthless about what you keep!  If you haven’t used it in the past 6 months to a year say good-bye.

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

{Cambria Stoneware Dinnerware Set in Stone}

Let go of dishes that collect dust and never get used.

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Say good-bye to the 100 cups everywhere. (I keep kids’ every day plastic cups in a different cupboard.)

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

{favorite handheld vacuums here & here}

If your drawers are already mostly organized take some time to vacuum the crumbs out quick and check if there is anything you can say good-bye to that you haven’t been using.

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

{madesmart organizer bins}

Toss toss toss.  Edit edit edit.

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

{silverware organizers herehere or here}

Silverware drawers always end up with dust/crumbs.  Why that is I’ll never understand but take some time to vacuum/wash those drawers out too!  (Or is it just at my house!?  Sometimes I wonder if my kids just stand over this drawer with a box of crackers!  ha.)

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Now is the time to toss any old dish cloths that are worn out or smell even after you wash them.  Some of my favorites are on sale!  I’m ordering a new set for spring. :)

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

{drawer divider for deep drawers}

If you have a drawer/cupboard that you’ve organized but it just isn’t staying that way, re-think how you’re organizing it.  I kept cleaning this drawer out and weeks later it would be messy again.  I finally separated the lids from the Tupperware with a drawer divider and now it’s so easy to keep organized!  Looks just like this still today.  Figure out what isn’t working.  Your spaces have to be organized in a way you can easily maintain them or you’ll be back to square one in no time.  The goal is to organize everything once and then just maintain and forget about it!

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

{chrome spice bottles/navy rugs}

Go through your spices this week and toss anything that has expired or that you’re not using!

I wish I could toss all of my spices and just stop cooking. (sigh) ;)

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Even if you love to cook you don’t need 30 post and pans.  Go through them and only keep what you’re really using often.  Clean out the space they are in and put only favorites back!

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

{pot lid organizers}

I am able to keep my pullout pot/pan drawers organized because I finally moved the lids to a new location.  So nice because I don’t even use the lids when I cook most of the time!  Separate lids if that would help you too.  (Lots of kitchen organizers I love/recommend are at the end of this post.)

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

Clean.

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

Really clean. :)

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

Wipe out under the kitchen sink and only keep/put back items you use often.

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

Find a good spot for those pesky water bottles.  Also get rid of half of them!  (Ideas for how to store water bottles are in my collage at the end of this post if you don’t have a drawer for them.)

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

Keep most used items near the places you use them daily.

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

If you keep cleaning supplies in your kitchen go through those too and toss what you aren’t using anymore.

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

{shelf organizer/marble tray/faux plant}

Do the same thing with medication if you keep it in your kitchen like I do.  Again, think about where you use items.  I could keep medication, bandaids, etc. in a linen closet, but where do we all hang out the most?  The kitchen.  It’s nice to have easy access to things like this that we use often.

{My Organized Pantry Post}

If your pantry is really messy you might want to spend this whole week working on your pantry when you have time.  That’s ok!  Pantries take time to really organize well in a way that you can maintain them.

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

{similar chalkboard here & here/flour & sugar canisters}

I organized my pantry like this years ago (as many of you know!) and haven’t had to re-organize it once since then.  Every single time I get groceries (every few days around here) I empty containers and put things back where they go and do a quick tidy.  My kids know where things go and are pretty good to put things back in the right spot.  I vacuum crumbs out of the baskets and drawers every few weeks.  It’s easy to maintain spaces when they are organized in a way that make sense.

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

{Expand A Shelf – MEGA size}

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

{drawer dividers}

If you have kids I recommend setting up a set place for snacks that’s easy for the kids to access.  Use a bin or basket if you don’t have drawers.

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

This was my pantry in my previous house.  Much smaller and to be honest.. easier for me to keep clean!  I was ruthless about what I kept.

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

This is my sister’s pantry!  She just organized it a few weeks ago so I’m adding it to this post to give you a few more ideas.  She was texting me pics while she was working on it and I was so happy for her.  Best feeling getting the pantry organized!  They eat a variety of cereal so it’s easier for her to just keep cereal in original boxes.  We eat the same 4 cereals over and over and humidity can be an issue here so I like to use these cereal containers.  Do whatever works best for you and your family!  Pantries come in all shapes and sizes and some of us don’t even have one.  Just work with the space you have.  If you have a smaller space you are going to have to keep even less and maybe set up a shelf for overflow in the garage, but it can still be organized and set up in a functional, easy to use way!

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

A couple more before/afters to get us all motivated this week!  Most kitchens have a dreaded junk drawer.

Kitchen Organization (Sunny Side Up)

{expandable organizers}

I prefer mine to be not so junky. :)

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

Sometimes kitchens become catch alls for other random things because we all hang out in our kitchens so much.  Our cord drawer looked like the above picture for years until I finally did something about it!

Remember to gelt rid of what you don’t need first and then seen what organizers would help keep your space organized.

kitchen organization (Sunny Side Up)

{organizers here and here}

I’m happy to say that this drawer (and the rest of my kitchen!) still looks like these pictures I shared with you today.  I say that not for a pat on the back (although I’ll give myself one because sometimes we just need to remind ourselves that we’re making progress!) but to show you that it really is possible to organize a space and then keep it that way.  I promise!  After this challenge we’ll talk a lot more about routines and habits that have helped me keep things organized, but first we have to organize everything!  One room each week.  We’ve got this. :)

Below are some of my favorites for kitchen organization!  May the force be with you!

Easter decor and Spring tops!

Easter decor and Spring tops! (Sunny Side Up)

{kitchen runner/hicks pendant/tie neck blouse/AG jeans/similar mules here & here}

Happy Saturday!  I hope you all had a great week!  I turned 44 on Thursday and according to Kole that’s great because I’m half way to 88.  Score!  Gotta love kids for keeping it real and always telling you exactly what you want to hear right?  Despite Kole’s grim observation I had a fabulous few days. :)  Very spoiled by my sweet family and friends.  Birthdays always leave me feeling so full of gratitude for all of the wonderful people in my life.  They also leave me tired because that much social interaction just wears me right out!

I am half way to 88 you know.  ;)

{Kenny – banks shorts/Vuori jacket – similar here & here}

We snapped these pictures quick on my birthday but Kole wasn’t home with us (he’s the only one who leaves the house for school each day!) so below is a pic with him from last year.

Can’t leave out my little buddy. :)

Easter decor and Spring tops! (Sunny Side Up)

Leaving an outdoor dinner with some close friends.. it was so fun catching up with everyone!  On a sidenote.. my cute friend Meghann opened up a new cookie store (BATCH and BOX) and her cookies are to die for!  Seriously the best cookies!  You can order them on-line for yourself or have them sent to someone as a gift.. so delicious!  I would show you a pic of the cookies but we all devoured them too quick before I could even take one.   I just wanted to share if you know someone who loves cookies or if you need a fun gift idea or just want to let someone know you are thinking about them.  We love them at our house!

Thanks to everyone who reached out on IG with sweet birthday wishes!  When I say I’m grateful for all of the wonderful people in my life I hope you all know that includes you.  I have no doubt we would all be besties if we lived close!  We would talk all day about organizing and decorating and share favorite Spring tops.

Oh wait.. we already do that. :)

Speaking of decorating.. Easter is fast approaching!  So is warmer weather.  YEA.  I’m so ready for it this year!  Last year I set this simple tablescape for Easter dinner since it was just the 5 of us.

So I did. :)  You’ve all seen most of these items because it’s all stuff I’ve had for years but still so fun to pull it out!

I love hanging eggs on faux branches!  You can enjoy them for a while and then take the eggs off after Ester and still leave the flowers up for Spring.

{similar candy dish/similar decorative Easter basket}

Eggs in a pretty basket is always simple Easter decor and of course I have to have some Easter candy out somewhere.  It’s my absolute favorite!  Especially the Chicks Ducks and Bunnies. And don’t get me started on Cadbury Eggs.  I try so hard to resist those in the grocery store because if they are in the house they won’t last a day!

Entry is feeling festive!

Easter decor and Spring tops! (Sunny Side Up)

My entry throw is a long time favorite for Spring/Summer from Serena and Lily.  They are having their Spring design event btw and everything is 20% off right now with code NEWLEAF!  The best time to pick something up at S & L.  I adore that store but it’s a little pricey so I always wait for one of the few 20% off sales they have.  I have all of my favorites linked HERE!

Easter decor and Spring tops! (Sunny Side Up)

I rounded up some fun Easter decor below!  I just got these plates for my birthday and they are beautiful!  These stunning chargers are on my wish list.  And seriously.. the bunny mat!  Dying over that one.

Spring fashion (Sunny Side Up)

{striped pullover sweater/AG jeans – on sale!/similar wedge sneaker}

Our weather has been tricking us lately.. nice and sunny and a hint of Spring one day and then back to cold!  I love the bright, happy colors in this sweater for cooler days.  Cute, comfortable and a perfect length.  You know how I feel about Madewell and on sale for just $31!

Spring fashion (Sunny Side Up)

{oversize crop henley/align yoga pants/adidas swift run sneaker}

I’ve been wearing this crop henley top over and over and over!  Just $35 and it is the perfect top to toss on over your workout clothes!  I’m debating getting another color.  So soft and comfortable!

Spring fashion (Sunny Side Up)

I wanted to show the side view because it’s not fitted and a little copped but perfect with high waist leggings.  I love the sleeves!  My girls both want to borrow it and that’s always how I know I’ve found a winner.. ha.  It runs a little big so I would order one size down (I’m wearing the xxs.)

Spring fashion (Sunny Side Up)

{floral ruffle blouse/AG jeans – on sale!/similar sandal options}

Isn’t this ruffle blouse pretty!?  Beautiful neck and sleeves.  I love it for Spring!  This will go fast so don’t wait if you want it!

This is the cute top I was wearing on my birthday.. another recent favorite!  I love it more casual with jeans but it’s also cute tucked in with a black pencil skirt and heels.

Spring fashion (Sunny Side Up)

The color and ruffle sleeves are such a cute combo!  I’ve mentioned this before but CeCe tops are some of my favorites!  Especially for Spring/Summer.

Spring fashion (Sunny Side Up)

{tie sleeve blouse/AG jeans – on sale!/similar mules here & here}

Another CeCe top I’m loving!  The sleeves on this hang so beautifully.. every time I wear it I get compliments!

{lucky tees/align yoga pants/adidas swift run sneaker}

And last but not least this cute graphic tee sold out but I’m sharing it because Lucky has so many cute tees in right now!  Below are a few favorites.  I’ve always really liked Lucky brand tees.  Stylish, fun and they are a great fit!

And that’s a wrap for today!  I’ll be back to talk all things kitchen organization for next week!  I’m organizing my messy laundry room today.  I won’t have it done in time to share for laundry week but I am determined to have it organized by the end of the day!  I need these deadlines!  Life always gets in the way and they force me to just prioritize it and get it done.  I hope you’re if you’re following along with my organizing challenge you are feeling the same and seeing some progress!  Something is always better than nothing right!?  We’ve got this. :)  Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Laundry Room Re-fresh!

*affiliate links used
Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

It’s laundry room week and time to whip our laundry spaces into shape!  I spent years without a real laundry room in past apartments/homes so when I had the chance to design this house I went a little crazy and added two!  (I’m tricky like that.)  This laundry room I’m sharing today is upstairs close to my kids’ bedrooms and my dream when I designed it was that someday my kids would completely take over and do all of their own laundry.  When we moved into this house my kids were 3, 7 and 9 and that dream felt pretty unachievable.  Ha!  But I’m happy to report that my kids (who are now almost 11, 15 and 17) all do their own laundry!  It’s a miracle I never thought I’d actually witness!  I’ll chat more about my laundry routine at the end of this post, but first here is a little re-fresh I recently gave this space!  I still love my striped rug but it has been years since I updated this laundry room and it was time.  Above is how it was looking before..

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

And this is how it’s looking today.  Just a little lighter and brighter for Spring!  It feels so happy and I didn’t spend much at all.  The only new item is this blush runner that I found on-line.  I didn’t want to spend too much on a rug for this laundry room because this isn’t a high traffic area and knowing me I’ll probably switch it out again at some point.  I was excited to find a cute runner for such a great price!  It has been over 8 years since I picked out the paint color for these cabinets and I love it every bit as much today as I did then.  I never get tired of green. :)

(You can download all of my paint colors here.)

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

Everything else I already had!  I just shopped my house.

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

I tried to stick with warm wood tones and whites and I brought in some of my favorite art that makes me happy.

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

My Hello Sunshine lemon is a long time favorite.  It reminds me of my blog – my happy place where I get to hang out with all of you and talk about green laundry room cabinets and lemon art. :)

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

{similar white faux flowers here & here}

Some pretty faux flowers in a vase brighten up every space!

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

If you’re new here my pull out laundry hampers are how we store dirty clothes in this room.  They are the first thing I ever sketched out for this house and I can’t recommend them enough if you are building/re-modeling.  If you don’t have the space for them I’ve seen so many cool ways to organize laundry with baskets!  Type “laundry room hampers” in the Pinterest search bar and so many fun options will pop up.

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

I didn’t get a picture of this and will share it better in IG stories this week but I have each hamper labeled when you pull them out – lights, darks and towels.  My kids have hampers in their bedrooms but then separate their clothes in these hampers every couple of days or when they are about to do laundry.

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

We have a pull out ironing board in this room too but I rarely use it.  I absolutely hate ironing!  It’s one of my least favorite chores so I just don’t do it very often.  (Because I’m tricky like that.)  I try to buy wrinkle free clothes and when something really needs to be ironed.. I use a steamer.  Anyone else with me on this one?  Maybe my kids will like ironing better than I do?  We haven’t tackled that one yet.. mastering one life skill at at time over here. ;)

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

As far as tips for organizing laundry supplies.. I really don’t have much in this room!  The few things I do use I keep in this cupboard above my washer and then I use the rest of the space in these cupboards to store my Christmas village! #priorities ;)  We display this village on the long table in our upstairs hallway each holiday season so I moved the village here a few years ago.  It’s so much easier to set up and take down each year with it all stored right next to the table we set it up on.  The rest of the drawers in this room are completely empty!

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

I’m pretty minimal when it comes to laundry products.  I use Tide Pods to wash our clothes and store them in these good grip jars that are long time favorites.  I keep them located right next to the washing machine.  They are out of sight when you walk in the room but are close to the washer and easy for my kids to reach.  The jars seal so tight and are perfect for laundry pods.

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

When it comes to doing laundry I think it’s so important to have a routine in place!  What that routine looks like doesn’t matter and it will be different for every family.  The important thing (if you want to stay on top of your laundry and not let it get the best of you!) is just to have a routine.  When my kids were little I cleaned my house in the late afternoon/evening and always did a load of laundry when my girls were playing together in their bathtub (their bathroom was next to my washer/dryer in our last house).  When we moved into this house and my kids started getting older my evenings became a lot busier so I started doing laundry in the morning.  Most mornings my routine is the same.  I wake up and splash some water on my face and put on my workout clothes.  I toss a load of wash in and then get on our treadmill for 30-40 minutes.  After I exercise I put the clean clothes in the dryer and then start getting my kids up and going for school.  I used to then toss in a load of the kids’ laundry in their laundry room too while I was upstairs getting them up.  Then I’d toss those clothes in the dryer after I dropped them off at school.  I usually end up folding and putting away clothes later in the afternoon in-between my kids’ activities.  Now that my kids do their own laundry I don’t use this laundry room much other than to help with their towels and sheets.  Tuesday is my main cleaning day so that’s the day that I always wash sheets and towels.  I wash our sheets most weeks and I wash my kids’ sheets every other week (one week I wash Kole’s and the next week I wash the girls’ sheets).  With this system I’m usually pretty caught up on laundry by Friday so I don’t have to do any over the weekend.  For me it has always been so much easier to do a load of laundry a day vs. spending one whole day doing laundry, but I know for some families that might not be the case!  Try out doing laundry a few different times/ways and see what works best.  Set a reminder on your phone each day if you have to until it becomes a routine.  I would love to hear about your laundry routine in the comments!  If you’re really struggling to stay on top of laundry I would recommend doing a load or two a day at the same time every day.  It’s so nice when you can stay on top of it all!

A few tips for the week while we get our laundry space organized!

– pull everything out of the room!
– touch each item and place it in a sack or pile
(keep/donate/trash/re-locate)
– wipe out/clean drawers, cupboards, shelves
– categorize the “keep” pile
(laundry supplies, storage, etc.)
– place items back in drawers, cupboards, shelves
– label any clear containers
– toss socks w/o a match
– clean out the washing machine (Google how to do this with your machine!  I just cleaned ours out a few months ago.. not a fun job but so nice to have done!)
– vacuum the lint trap
– use bins/baskets to sort dirty clothes (lights/darks/towels)
– establish a routine for laundry & get the family on board!
– add flowers/decorate (make it a happy space!)
.

So here’s the deal.. my home is mostly organized but there are two spaces that are just a continual hot mess because I haven’t taken the time to really organize them well.  One of them is my master closet.  The other one?  My main floor laundry room!  So I’ll be reading my own tips and totally organizing my messy laundry room this week right along with you!  A big part of the reason I did this challenge is because I knew it would force me to organize spaces I haven’t prioritized (because I’m tricky like that) and this laundry room is one of those spaces!  Here are a few “befores.”  Warning.. it’s bad.

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

Um.. what exactly is happening in these cupboards!?

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

And these drawers?  Laughing because I have my favorite battery organizer and yet.. batteries aren’t in it!  Just hanging out all around it!  Ha.  Kenny bought some and then I found some in another room.. anyway.. I think we’re covered on batteries!

Laundry Room Re-fresh (Sunny Side Up)

Need a lightbulb anyone?

Yeah.. like I said.. this room needs some help!  Every drawer and cupboard is like this because I just haven’t taken the time to organize them.  This room ALWAYS gets put on the back burner.  I’m so excited to get on top of it this week!  I’ll hopefully have some progress to share soon!  We are also tackling kids’ shoes this week so if you have any type of mudroom/entry/shoe system set up we’re cleaning up and organizing those spaces too.  Lots to do!  Best of luck to all of you and wish me the same!

I’ll definitely need it. :)

Organized Bathroom Progress!

*affiliate links used

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

{shower curtain – back in stock and only $30!/similar CLEAN rug here & here}

Well!  It has been quite a week.  Life is picking up around here and my kids are getting busy again which is a good thing!  It’s also a good thing that we’re easing into everything slowly because I’m not exactly conditioned for my pre-Covid life.  Ha.  I’m so tired!  Our week was a little crazy but I’m happy to say that despite our busy schedule my bathrooms are all organized!  The rest of my house is a mess and I did’t have time to blog much about my bathrooms, but still.. I made it!  Did you!?  Were you able to organize a bathroom or two at your house?  In my last post I shared all of the drawers in my master bathroom that have stayed clean since I last organized them.  Today I’m sharing a few more bathroom projects.  I’ll still have one more bathroom post to share after today’s post, but it will have to come later because we are tackling laundry rooms this week and I don’t know about all of you, but I seriously have my work cut out for me on that one!

Here’s a re-cap of some bathroom progress!  I went in to organize our guest bathroom (located in-between the guest room and Kenny’s office) and the first thing I noticed was how filthy dirty my CLEAN rug was. That just made me laugh.

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

{bosworth rug}

So I washed it.  CLEAN once again. :)

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

Kenny has been using the towel hooks to hold his dress shirts for when he has to throw one on for Zoom.  My sister and her family are visiting for a few days this month (can’t wait to see them!) so it was time to put the towels back on the hooks and make this space look like our guest bathroom again!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

I washed out the garbage can and got to work going through cabinets/drawers.

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

They weren’t too bad because I don’t keep much in here, but very dusty because I haven’t wiped them out in years!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

I cleaned out all of the cupboards and drawers and folded the towels.  A quick project but it feels good knowing this bathroom is ready for guests!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

{grey wood 4-piece bath set}

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

This bathtub has built-in shelves we used for Kole’s bath toys when he was little.  He just showers now so it was time to let go of the bath toys. (Tear)  Sentimental things like that with my kids are always the hardest for me to part with!  But I’ve saved some special things through the years and I try to remember a quote that helps me when I’m organizing.. “If everything is special then nothing is special.” I love that.  It’s such a good reminder to be selective about what you choose to save.  I had a mom moment and got a little lump in my throat but finally said good-bye to the bath toys. :)

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

Toilet paper is in the far left cupboard and everything else is empty!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

This bathroom also has some built-ins behind the door and a pullout hamper for laundry.  We crammed as much as we could in this space!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

{similar vase/faux peonies/soap dispenser}

I keep my faux pink peonies in this space (the pop of color they add always makes me happy!) but when guests come I love switching them out for real flowers.  An easy way to make your guests feel welcome. :)

I shared the organization happening on my side of the bathroom in my last post but Kenny’s side needed some attention!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

A paint brush in this cupboard?  Really Kenny?  Why am I not surprised.

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

A few more fun “befores.”  You can see that I bought organizers and attempted to clean these drawers out at one point but they definitely didn’t stay that way!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

You get the picture!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

Time to pull everything out onto the floor and give cupboards/drawers a good wipe down!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

I also cleaned out our brushes.  After you’ve taken the hair out let them soak in a little shampoo and hot water and they’ll sparkle like new again!  (Ignore the bad lighting in so many of these pics.. I was working fast and just snapping them quick with my phone!)

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

Now that the tub toys were gone I had these grey bins from Target laying around.  I washed them out and put them to good use!  (Sidenote.. my beloved Cambria Serving bowl holding oranges is on sale!)

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

My old bins were perfect to hold all of Kenny’s “extras.”  Razors, deodorant, toothpaste, etc.  Nice and tidy!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

{linus shallow drawer organizer}

His drawers are looking so much better now too!  Most of the stuff that was crammed in them was packaging and garbage.  I gave Kenny some Jack Black shaving cream and other products to try for Christmas and they were still just sitting in a package!  No doubt they would have sat there in a box for years if I hadn’t opened them for him.

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

Huge improvement right!?

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

Travel bags and mirrors in the last drawer.  There isn’t a lot of stuff so he should be able to maintain these.  I’ll be monitoring of course. ;)

I showed Kenny his sparkling clean side of the bathroom and asked “can you please try really hard to keep these drawers organized!?  Just put things right back where they go after you use them.”  His answer?  “Erin.. I mess things up for you.  I need to give you some blog content.  What would you organize if it weren’t for me?  I’m here for you babe.  You’re welcome.”

Yup.. that’s what I live with.

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

If you’re organizing with me on IG stories Kole gave us all a lesson on how to fold towels. :)  So many people wrote me asking if he could teach their husbands which made me laugh!  Happy to know it’s not just my husband who could learn a thing or two about cleaning/organizing, ;)

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

On to the powder bathroom!  She’s looking fancy with a new rug. :)

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

{love yourself rug mat}

Love yourself.  Not a bad reminder. :)  I was going to put this cute mat in my girls’ bathroom but we all decided we like it best in this space and I’m currently looking for some new rugs for the girls.

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

I keep this bathroom pretty clean and organized because it’s the most used bathroom in our house but the toothbrush drawer needed to be wiped out!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

{silverware tray}

I get Kole ready here every morning so it was getting dirty.  I’ve shared this drawer and tip before but for anyone new.. we keep extra toothbrushes in this bathroom because it’s close to the garage door.  That way my kids can brush their teeth here if we’re having a busy morning and need to get out the door quick for school.  It saves so much time not having to run back upstairs after breakfast!

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

I keep extra towels in the other drawers.

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

Seasonal.. mostly stuff I use in this bathroom.

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

{similar bath mat here & here}

I didn’t take a new picture (which is why you’re seeing the rug we used last Spring!) but I did wipe out under the sink.  It’s always a hot spot so I try to give it a quick clean out every 6 months or so.

Organized Bathrooms (Sunny Side Up)

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

I’m kicking off our organization challenge this week with all things bathroom!  Yea!  I can hear the Rocky music playing in the background. :)  Did you download your printable and make your lists?  Before we jump into bathroom cupboards and drawers I wanted to share one more important tip for this challenge that I forgot to mention in my last post. Look ahead at your schedule this week and calendar your organizing time. Will it be easiest to work on your bathrooms for 20 minutes each night this week?  Or do you have a two hour window on Wednesday evening?  Calendar that time and let your family know so that it actually happens.  Once you’ve done that, be realistic about how much you can get done.  If time is short just focus on really organizing one bathroom.  OR just go through each bathroom and purge items you don’t need.  Remember that SOMETHING is always better than NOTHING!  Other general tips for this challenge are here if you missed them.

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

Bathrooms can get so out of control!  Start by taking everything out of your cupboards and drawers.

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

I always set items on a towel or rug.  Pick up each item and decide if it goes in the keep/donate/trash/re-locate pile.  Anything you are trashing goes straight in a garbage bag!  If products are old, expired, mostly empty.. trash them.  Also recycle all boxes and packages.  If it’s a newish product but you haven’t used it in the last three months give it to someone who will.  I gave a lot of unused items to my girls when I cleaned out my bathroom.

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

I didn’t photograph my piles when I initially cleaned this cupboard but I did have piles going for keep/relocate/donate behind me when I took this picture.  You’ll find that a lot of bathroom clutter can go straight to the trash!  Be ruthless with purging and only keep items you really use and love!

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

Done with my piles and easily filled a bag of garbage!

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

I started working on Kenny’s bathroom drawers tonight and snapped a pic of the items I always have on hand when I clean out bathrooms.  Garbage bags, paper towels, hot soapy water, a washcloth, and a hand held vac (I bought this one about six months ago to keep in my bathroom/closet and it’s great for quickly cleaning out drawers!).

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

When cupboards/drawers are REALLY bad and especially if they have a lot of hair (common in bathrooms!) I just use a damp paper towel to wipe out the majority of the mess. If it’s not too bad, I use my handheld vacuum to pick up the dirt/hair.  Then I always wipe out and clean the cupboard/drawer with hot soapy water.  You can just start with the hot soapy water first if that’s easier.  Whatever works for you!  I’m just sharing my method. :)

Next categorize your “keep pile” by grouping like items together.  All the make-up in one pile, all of your skin care, dental, etc.

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

Then my favorite part.  Putting everything back nice and organized into a clean space! :)

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

{divided lazy susan}

I placed all of my items back into this cupboard and THEN thought about what organizer might work best.  I really didn’t need much!  Eventually I ordered this lazy susan to hold items I reach for the most often.

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

When I pulled things out of my drawers my bathroom took a major turn for the worse.. ha.  Things always get really bad before they get really good when you’re organizing!

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

I was starting to categories the “keep” items in this pic (see all the toothpaste, chapstick, contacts together, etc.).  We buy a lot of items we use in bulk at Costco so there are  always extras to store.

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

Once I put my “keep” items back in the drawers I could tell I needed some dividers.  These sketches came after all of the purging and cleaning was done!  I always recommend that you purge and clean BEFORE you order organizers.  I think we often get ahead on this because ordering the organizers is fun and it makes us feel like we’re doing something to improve our situation.  The thing that actually improves our situation is getting rid of items we don’t need.

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

{linus shallow drawer organizer}

Let the organizers be the icing on the cake that you get when you reach your goal. :)

A few fun “afters”..

Feels amazing when everything is clean, doesn’t it!?  These pics are from last April and because this system is so organized and perfect for the way I get ready each day it has been a breeze to keep clean!  Tomorrow I’m going to vacuum out my organizers and I think I’ll go through this bottom drawer and give my girls some of these samples because I haven’t used a lot of them.  If I haven’t used them in almost a year I know I won’t!  Time to say good-bye.

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

Also take some time to go through towels.  Pull everything out of linen closets/cabinets.  Donate old towels and treat yourself to some new, clean towels if it’s time.  (Animal shelters are a great place to donate old towels!)  I’ve replaced a lot of the towels in this picture that were wearing out with these grey/white towels.  They are inexpensive and we’ve loved them!  They absorb water well and are stylish.  My two must haves for towels. :)

Bathroom Organization Tips (Sunny Side Up)

Wipe out your cupboards and fold everything nicely and put it back.  My bottom baskets hold washcloths I use when I clean.

I hope this post gives you some ideas and motivation to hit the ground running this week and whip your bathrooms into shape!  It’s the best feeling to get ready each day in an organized bathroom.  I’ll share more of my progress soon.  Below are 12 of my favorite bathroom organizers!  Just promise me you’ll order what works best in your bathroom after you toss all of the junk. ;)

*sidenoteNumbers 2, 4, 7, 11 and 12 are in my bathroom pics above. I also have #10 in my vanity drawers.  They are great but really shallow!  Perfect for shallow drawers.  I’m obsessed with #9 (wish list!) and #6 looks like a similar/less expensive option for the main drawer dividers I use.

1-  woven tank tray   2 – large deep drawer bin  3 – 2-tier organizer basket

4 –  linus shallow drawer organizer   5 – hanging shower caddy  6 – 16-piece organizer set

Get Organized Challenge!

Organization Challenge (Sunny Side Up)Happy weekend everyone!  I’m so excited about today’s post!  Ahhhh!  We are going to get organized!  All of us!  Together!  The whole house!  Totally organized!  Or at least pretty close. ;)  You all know how much I love organization.  It’s just the best.  There are so many benefits to having an organized home!  Just to name a few..

  • We save SO much time when our homes are organized.  Think of how much time you spend looking for things when your house is messy.  We’ve all been there!  Maintaining messy spaces, hunting for items we need.  Wasting time we could be spending working on our goals, enjoying hobbies, family and friends.
  • We save money by not buying duplicates of things or items we don’t use/love.
  • When our homes are cluttered so are our minds.  Our homes have a HUGE impact on how we feel each day!  Happiness, self confidence, productivity.. an organized home helps with all of that.  Your overall mental health will improve when your home is in order.  Don’t underestimate how important it is!

If having an organized home is so amazing why don’t we all have one?  Well.  Because it’s not easy.  But I will tell you this.  It’s doable!  And it’s absolutely worth the effort.  My house is not perfectly clean all the time. It’s really not.  Anyone who has kids and a busy family is going to have messes.  Even if you have no kids and a low key schedule your house will be messy at times!  That’s life.  But when you only keep things you use and love and you have systems set up in each room to keep items organized, messes just aren’t a big deal and can be cleaned up quickly.

So are you convinced?  Are you sold on the importance of having an organized home?  Are you ready to organize with me!?  I so hope you are all nodding your heads! :)  To kick off March and Spring I thought it would be fun to host an organization challenge!  There are 9 weeks in March and April combined.  We are going to focus on organizing certain rooms in our home each week.  If we really commit to this and work hard on one space each week think of how amazing our homes will feel 2 months from now!

Here is our schedule..

Week 1 – BATHROOMS (March 1-6)
Week 2 – LAUNDRY ROOM/ENTRY/MUDROOM (shoe drop zone!)  (March 7-13)
Week 3 – KITCHEN  (March 14-20)
Week 4 – CLOSETS (March 21-27)
Week 5 – BEDROOMS (March 28-April 3)
Week 6 – FAMILY/LIVING ROOM  (April 4-10)
Week 7 – HOME OFFICE/PAPER  (April 11-17)
Week 8 – PLAYROOM/TOYS  (April 18-24)

Week 9 – GARAGE  (April 25-May 1)

I’m going to be doing this right along with you!  Yes a lot of these spaces in my home are already organized, but some of them aren’t.  I have several hot spots I’ve never really organized and I’m excited to knock them all off of my list for good!  Also my organized spaces can all use a quick tidy/re-fresh.  Even if your home is mostly organized I still think you can benefit from this challenge!  We all can.  It’s a great time of year to really determine if our homes, systems and routines are working well for us.  If they aren’t.. it’s time to fix that!

The challenge starts this Monday, March 1st!  This is what I want you to do this weekend..

1 – First.. click HERE to sign up for my e-mail list and download my Get Organized printables!  If you don’t get a follow-up e-mail soon after check your junk/spam!
Organization Challenge (Sunny Side Up)

It’s one large PDF but you can choose what you want to print!

Organization Challenge (Sunny Side Up)

There are 3 pages that include a general checklist and tips.  If you feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.. follow this!  Obviously every home is different and some things might not apply, but it’s a good general idea of what items are important to focus on.

I also included 3 pages of the same checklists that are blank!  If you’d rather fill out your own checklist items for each space, print these out and get to work making your to-do list.  This is helpful because our homes are so unique.  Some of my home office items might be located in your kitchen, etc.  There is also a printable that has every space on one page if you don’t feel like you need as many to-do lines.  Most of us will need the 3 pages. ;)  Print just a few or print them all!  Use whatever is helpful and make these checklists work for you.

2 – Follow me on IG if you aren’t already.  I’ll be sharing pictures, tips and my progress on my main feed and in stories.  I’m going to use the hashtag #ssugetorganized and would absolutely LOVE it if you would share your before/after pictures on IG too!  Tag me at erin_sunnysideup and use the hashtag #ssugetorganized and I’ll share some of your before/afters in stories to help motivate us all and give us more ideas!  I’m thinking I’ll mail a few fun things to people participating too. :)

3 – Buy black garbage bags if you don’t have them already.  A label maker is helpful too but not necessary!  (I’ve heard really good things about this label maker.)

4 – Get a friend to do it with you!  I’m serious.  Right now call or text a close friend or family member and get them on board.  It’s so much more fun and it will hold you accountable each week!

Ok.. that’s it for this weekend!  *Print the printables, make your lists, get your garbage bags ready, follow me on IG and text a friend!

I’ll be writing one post about the assigned space to kick off each week with some ideas and tips that have helped me.  Here are a few general tips to keep in mind before we get started..

General tips:

This isn’t a cleaning challenge.  Cleaning and organizing go hand in hand so let me explain.  The goal of this challenge is to get rid of items we don’t need and to organize the cupboards, drawers, piles, hot spots in our homes that are cluttering up our lives.  If you finish cleaning out all of your bathroom cupboards/drawers and have time to then wipe off counters and mirrors and scrub your shower.. go for it!  But the main goal is to PURGE like your life depends on it and organize all of the hidden messy spaces.  Do that first!  Then if you have extra time during the week you can do some deep cleaning too.

I’ll say it again.. be ruthless with purging/donating items!  Pump yourself up before you start to get rid of as much as you can.  Less is more.  Trust me.. you won’t miss things!  To truly be organized you have to be comfortable living with less stuff.

Organization Challenge (Sunny Side Up)

If you’re short on time one week and can’t really get around to organizing your space, just commit to purging items you don’t need/use/love.  Just doing that alone will make a difference!  You can come back to that space to organize it all later.  Feel free to move ahead if you complete spaces early, just don’t get burned out!  It might be better for you to put your feet up and rest if you complete a space early so that you have energy to tackle a new space the next week.  :)

Don’t buy organizers YET.  Wait until each space is complete to see what you really need.  Then if organizers would be helpful you can order some.

Resist the urge to over organize and have everything labeled and color coordinated.  Yes.. this is coming from me.  The one who loves to over organize and label everything and make it all color coordinated. Ha. ;)  That’s my personality (I have a touch of OCD in case you haven’t noticed!) and I’m a more naturally organized person and it’s part of what I do for a living.  If that’s you too then great.. go for it!  Live it up and label away!  If that’s just NOT you.. take the pressure off of yourself immediately!  The goal of this challenge is to get rid of clutter and to set up systems that work for you/your family and that will be sustainable.  For example: If having all of your cereal dumped into clear cereal bins isn’t something you want to keep doing every time you get groceries.. don’t do it!  Designate a spot for your cereal boxes all together in your pantry/cupboard and line them up.  Done!  Something you can easily maintain.  (I’m talking to you mom.) ;)

Don’t waste too much time making decisions.  You want to move fast and get as much done as you can in the time you have.  I always say when it doubt.. donate!  Plus moving fast keeps your momentum up!

Get a good playlist ready!  Or download a good book on audible or find some fun podcasts to listen to while you work.  Make this fun!

It’s time to party!  My kind of party.  And you’re all invited.  #ssugetorganized

LET’S DO THIS!

:)

{similar pink cherry blossom branches/Quin white vase/similar round tray/Abbott table/similar chairs/Arabesque rug}

It’s a new week!  And I’m feeling optimistic.  Covid numbers are down and there is a strong possibility my girls will be going back to school one day a week in March and two days a week in April.  That is reason to celebrate around here!  I’m praying the winter storms will slow down for so many of you who are affected (Texas our prayers are still with you) and we can all get back to more of a normal pace.  Spring can’t come soon enough this year!

Favorite Faux Flowers (Sunny Side Up)

Speaking of Spring.. let’s talk faux flowers!  I started pulling mine out the other day and it was such an immediate pick me up.

Favorite Faux Flowers (Sunny Side Up)

{similar clear vase/similar bowl}

Of course.. real flowers are beautiful and we love those too!

Favorite Faux Flowers (Sunny Side Up)

But real flowers are like real life.  Often messy. :)  And since I crave simplifying things as much as possible around here.. most of my flowers are fake.

Favorite Faux Flowers (Sunny Side Up)

{similar lilacs here & here/Artisan vase/similar bowl}

Not all faux flowers are created equal and unfortunately the faux flowers that look the most realistic always cost more than I wish they did.  But they truly are a gift that keeps on giving when you pull them out year after year.  A smart investment in my opinion!  Along with cute shoes and comfy joggers.  You know.. a true need vs. a want.  Kenny still doesn’t think I’ve learned the difference between the two but I know my blog besties will back me up on this one. ;)

Purse Organization

*affiliate links used

When I was a little girl one of my favorite things to do was to organize my mom’s purse!  So funny I know.. but I loved it.  I would get permission first of course, and then dump everything in her purse out onto the floor.  Then I would happily make little piles of the loose change, make-up, trash, receipts, etc.  I loved lining up her credit cards in her wallet and putting everything back nice and tidy.  Every time she bought a new purse she would give it to me to switch everything over from her old purse.  To this day my mom still calls me when she gets a new purse.  “I wish you were here!  I bought a new purse today and need you to organize it!” :)

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Not much has changed and I still get excited to organize my purse or switch to a new bag!  I snapped this pic over Christmas break.  Kenny bought me this cute Tory Burch purse for Christmas (after some slight hinting) and I organized it one night watching Twilight on my bed with Addison.  A warm fire, Christmas lights, Edward Cullen and a little purse organization?  My idea of a good time. ;)

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

{Tory Burch purse/Tory Burch wallet/make-up bag/Chanel sunglasses}

I thought it would be fun to show you what I keep in my purse that helps me stay organized!  I don’t like a lot of loose items floating around so I always just have my sunglasses, phone, keys, wallet (I’ve had this wallet for over 4 years and love it – room for everything!) and a smaller make-up purse.  I really try to only keep essentials inside, but purses can become landing zones for all sorts of things so I clean mine out often.  Usually when I’m waiting to pick my kids up from school, an activity or a friend’s house.  A 5 minute break in my car is always just enough time to go through and toss any junk/clean things up!

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Alright.  Purse details!  I keep this cute little hand sanitizer keychain on the side of my purse for easy access.

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

My best tip to help keep your purse organized is to have some sort of smaller purse/make-up bag inside of your purse that holds all of the little things!  It’s easy to grab when you need something (vs. searching through a large purse) AND it makes it easy to switch bags/purses quickly if you want to mix things up with a different outfit or for a different activity like date night, etc.

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

I like this little make-up bag because it has two sections.  One side opens like this and I keep lipstick and other make-up on the left.  I use the pocket on the right for gift cards and receipts I want to hang on to.  (I always trash receipts immediately unless I bought something I might want to return!)

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Then it has a zipper compartment on the other side.

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

I dumped it out for you.  Ha.  My essentials!  I always have floss, a hair elastic, nail clippers, one of my favorite pilot pens, and Cherry Natural Ice on hand.  Always!  Also one more lip gloss (Bobbi Brown lip gloss is my favorite) and this little pill case I use to hold Tylenol/Ibuprofen if anyone in my crew has a headache.  And always Benadryl.  Because when you have a child with allergies you always have it on hand too. :)

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Ok.. let’s talk organizing ALL the purses/bags!  I keep our beach bags and larger bags on hooks in this small luggage closet in our mudroom.

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

Hooks on the wall are such a great solution for purses/bags!

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

And backpacks. :)

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

My girls have loved having hooks in their closets for purses and I would do this in my closet too except that I don’t have the empty wall space for it.

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

For a while I used this type of purse organizer to hold my purses hanging in my closet.

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

It holds a lot and is a great solution.  The only downside is that it takes up precious hanging space.  I wanted to be able to fit more dresses on this rack so..

Purse Organization (Sunny Side Up)

I currently have my purses in a closet drawer.  The only downside of this is that it takes up precious drawer space!  Ha.  I basically want to keep and store all of my purses in my closet without having them take up any space.  Is that so much to ask? ;)  I’m not sure if I’ll keep my purses in this drawer or do something else with them.  My closet is still a work in progress!  I’ve been looking at lots of ideas for how to organize purses and included a few great solutions below.  I also included a round-up of my current favorite purses and wallets.  Spoiler alert – I’m partial to Tory Burch. :)

Well this was fun wasn’t it!?  Anyone else love talking purse organization as much as I do!?  LOVE this topic!

Mom.. guess what you’re getting for your birthday this year!?

Don’t worry.  I’ll organize it for you.

Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

{faux pink peonies/gold vase/similar pink heart plate/scalloped cake stand options here/here/here}

Happy Valentine’s Day!  I hope you’re having a good weekend so far!  We’re excited for a slow weekend at home after a busy week.  A few of my kids’ after school activities are picking up again and it feels so good!  But all of that running around wore us right out.  We aren’t conditioned for it like we used to be!  Ha.

Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

We made these cute mini tacos for the Super Bowl (found the idea on IG) and I shared them in stories, but wanted to share them here too for anyone who missed it. You just buy the mini tortilla shells and place them in a muffin tin.  Then add your cooked hamburger mix (or chicken or whatever meat you want to use!).  Add cheese and then bake at 375 just until the cheese melts.  Then add any toppings you want!  Such a quick and easy dinner and my kids loved them!

Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

{cowl neck sweater/ag jeans/ugg slippers}

I ordered this cowl neck sweater that was on sale thinking it looked so cute (I shared it in a post not long ago).  When I came I put it on and could tell immediately that I loved it!  Then I realized it looked a little familiar.

{cowl neck sweater}

Turns out I’m now the proud owner of THREE of this same sweater.  Ha!  I had to laugh at myself. Please tell me I’m not alone in being so predictable and not even realizing that I ordered a sweater I already had in two other colors!  Clearly I love this sweater and I’m keeping the green!  It’s so comfortable and warm and slouchy but still looks put together with a little front tuck.  It’s on sale for just $28!  Such a steal.  Maybe I need the pink or maroon too? ;)  (*It runs big so order one size down!)

I want to give my office a little re-fresh this year with some new paint!  I’ve loved the blue, but I’m getting tired of it.  I change my mind daily about the direction I want to go with the new paint and this room so who knows when you’ll see an “after!?”

But I have a few colors to put up on the wall to test and we’ll go from there.  I’ll keep you posted!  Anyone else doing some painting this month?  It’s the best way to update a space without spending much and I’m always surprised at the different a little paint can make!

Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

Serena & Lily has always been a favorite store of mine and recently they reached out to see if I wanted to tour their new San Diego store before it opened.  Um.. YES and YES!  They let me bring a friend and it was so fun checking it out!  I’ve been shopping at S & L for years but always on-line.  I’ve never even seen one of their stores in person and this 6,000 sq. foot store didn’t disappoint!  So beautiful.  I thought I’d share some pics I snapped quick with my phone because they are so full of decorating inspiration!  I’ve always loved their Ventura Chandelier.  It’s HUGE in person!

Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

I have the smaller version (the Malibu Chandelier) in our guest bedroom. :)   This bed is from S&L too and is on sale!

Weekend Catch Up

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

Happy Sunday!  Quick post today with a little weekend catch up!  A few random pics of a few random things going on around here. :)  I keep meaning to share this earring ladder jewelry stand I got for Christmas because I’m in love with it for earrings!

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

I hinted to Kenny that I wanted it and he accidentally bought me this medium earring ladder.  Beautiful, but it doesn’t have the little holes for earring that don’t have hooks on the back.  I ordered the ladder I wanted and took the other one back but thought I’d share both options.

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

I still use my little bowls to organize hoops, studs and smaller earrings, but I love having the ladder stand for my long earrings.

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

You can see more details on my jewelry organization HERE.

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

{Stetson Table Lamp}

I ordered two of these grey table lamps in October and they finally arrived!  They were backordered so long I almost forgot about them completely.  Such a happy surprise when they showed up on my front door!  Lousy cell pic right after I opened them and hadn’t even taken the plastic off of the drum!  I’m still trying to figure out where to put them because they look good in several places.  Thought I’d share in case anyone is looking for some good lamps!  They were a bit of a splurge but are gorgeous in person.  Backordered again though!  I’m obviously not the only person who is smitten with them. :)

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

A recent hike to the beach.

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

Love these three. :)

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

{Time Marker Water Bottle}

Getting exercise hasn’t been a problem around here because with everything still semi shut down and my girls doing school from home we make an effort to get outside and move every day.  Drinking my water is another story!  It’s so hard for me!  I bought this water bottle at the beginning of the year and it has been helping.  I don’t necessarily stick with the time slots on it, but just seeing them is a constant reminder to keep drinking water.  I also like this water bottle because it fits in my car – easy to grab and go! I’ve found I do best with my water goal when I get up and exercise first thing in the morning.  I drink one full bottle then and it starts my day off on track and is easier to get my ounces in.  When I don’t exercise first thing I don’t drink much in the morning and then by late afternoon I’m really craving a Coke Zero and usually cave and bag the water!  I want so badly to make the water drinking a habit that just happens without thinking about it but so far.. I’m still thinking about it. :)

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

{Chunky Wool Jute Rug}

Speaking of Coke Zero.. ha.  This is why I never have a lot of coffee table decor!  One small tray and a few items in the corner and then I always leave the rest of the table empty because this is what it looks like every night.  Coke Zero and pretzels are staples.  Always some sort of math/homework on a clip board.  Ad got The Hunger Games trilogy for Christmas and read them so fast.  Then we had fun watching the movies together.  Kole has been into Narnia.  I’m reading Shea’s book and always have my planner and a stack of papers I’m carrying around with me.  I came across this pic on my phone from January and it made me smile because it’s so us right now.  :)

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

I also found this pic on my phone that perfectly sums up Kole right now.  He goes to school in person, but the week after a vacation they always have the kids do on-line school.  His beloved checkered robe, retainer case, space water bottle, organized school supplies because he likes to keep things neat like his mom.  Funny how one picture can tell so much about a person.  Age 10 for my sweet boy. :)

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

He finished reading Hatchet in school and had to build a hut.  We used pretzels (of course) and he said it was a hit because it was the only hut made out of food.  Ha.

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

{Jeans/Crossbody Bag/Black Masks}

One thing I will always remember about this time (and be grateful for) is spending so much time with my girls.  We eat lunch together every day and then we take a break every afternoon when they get out of school and go on a little drive.  Usually just to get some groceries or we make a Starbucks run or we just run to pick up Kole from school.  A lot of times Ellie drives us (still so crazy to me that she is driving!).  Ad lives for her pink drinks and does chores and babysits to earn money for them. Remember the cute little crossbody bags I got them for Christmas?  Huge hit. :)

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

The Super Bowl is here!  Always an exciting day for my husband.  We’re just having a family day so I’m going to make some treats to make it more fun for me and the kids since none of us care too much about the actual game.  These pics are so old!  From a blog post YEARS ago (anyone remember?) :) but I’m sharing them because they are simple game day snacks that everyone loves!  The football cheese and cracker platter is always my favorite.

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

And of course you can’t go wrong with chip dip on game day.  This 6 layer refried bean dip never lasts long at our house!

{6 LAYER REFRIED BEAN DIP}
1st layer:    Refried Beans
2nd layer:  Mix together 1 T lemon juice, 1 to 3 avocados, 1/2 t salt, 1/4 t pepper, 1 cup sour cream,
1-2 T taco seasoning mix
3rd layer:  1 cup chopped onions
4th layer:  1 cup chopped tomatoes
5th layer:  1 cup chopped olives – I added more than that – I like olives.  :)
6th layer:  1 to 2 cups shredded cheese

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

I recently shared my skin care routine and some favorite products and just realized they are all 15% off this weekend!  This discovery collection is on sale for such a good price and is a great way to try out a lot of the best selling products to see how well they work for you.  Would be a fun Valentine’s Day gift for a friend/family too!

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

Also the extreme recovery cream is on major markdown and is the best moisturizer I’ve ever used!  So lightweight, smells amazing and is incredible for dry skin.

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

Ok guys.. last but not least.. we’ve made some progress in Addison’s bedroom!  Here is her main bedroom wall before.. and (drumroll please) here is the wall today..

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

Ta-da!  We’re so excited about how it turned out!  We need to paint still of course, but we are both IN LOVE with this simple molding!  We really debated what look to go with (thought about everything from wallpaper to herringbone shiplap) and at the end of the day Ad just kept wanting something more simple.  She loves our guest room wall with the grid so I sketched out this which has a similar feel and she loved it.  It pretty much looks like the molding all throughout our house so at least we’re consistent!  Ha.  I can already see it with a new headboard and paint and something fun on the wall above her bed.  Can’t wait!

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

Now we’ve checked off her desk area, organized her closet and finished the wall molding.  Time to paint and decorate!  I’m excited to start looking on-line for a cute rug.

And now you’re not only caught up on what’s been going on around here, but you also know what I’ll be doing while I’m munching on cheese and crackers and “watching” the Super Bowl.

;)

Valentine's Day Home Decor Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

Happy February!  I’m sharing a few Valentine’s decor ideas and other recent loves today!  Last year I went all out with Valentine’s decor but honestly I’ve had a harder time getting into it this year.

Valentine's Day Bathroom (Sunny Side Up)

I decorated the powder bathroom..

Kitchen decor (Sunny Side Up)

{faux pink peonies/gold vase/scalloped cake stand options here/here/here}

and added some fun touches to my kitchen, but other than that I’m just kind of ready to move on to Spring!  Although last year I wasn’t really feeling Valentine’s Day decor either until about Feb. 5th.  Then on a whim I decided it was the best holiday ever and added hearts to EVERY ROOM in our house.  Ha.  I’m tricky like that.

Here’s a few ideas from last year if you are feeling the love and want to add hearts to EVERY ROOM in your house too!

I mentioned a little styling tip last year when I shared this festive shelf!

Valentine's Day Home Decor Ideas (Sunny Side Up)

If you aren’t quite ready to put away your Christmas trees, toss some heart banners on them, add a cute mat and call it a Valentine’s Day porch!  This took me a whole 15 minutes last year and we loved it so much I’m doing it again. :)  You can find lots of great options for heart banners HERE.  I combined two to make the banner across my door.

I added this simple banner to our mudroom lockers.  They would be so cute hanging down any door or even in a window!

Weekend catch up (Sunny Side Up)

And this has nothing to do with Valentine’s Day but since I’m beyond in love with these sweats I had to mention them again!  I shared the pants not long ago in this post but got the matching sweatshirt in the mail and seriously.. this outfit is heaven on earth!  The softest material!  Such a flattering fit!  I immediately bought the same set in black after the sweatshirt came.  They are almost sold out at Nordstrom but I also found them HERE and HERE.  Seriously don’t hesitate if you are looking for comfy sweats!  You can thank me when you put them on. :)

Below are a few other favorites that are on sale!

Teen Bedroom Re-fresh take one!

*this post is sponsored by Walmart and affiliate links are used. All product selections and opinions are my own!
Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

{similar bedding}

I have so many home projects on my list for this year and priority #1 at the top of my list is Addison’s bedroom!  We had it decorated so cute for Christmas and I ran out of time and didn’t get to share it.  Blog story of my life. ;)  We finished building and moved into our home over 7 years ago which is so hard to believe!  Addison was 7 years old when we moved in and she wanted a pink bed with blue walls. :)  Her blue and pink bedroom has served us well, but she is now 14 years old and ready for a change!  Time for a more grown up look for my sweet teen.  Her favorite color is still blue, but she wants blue accents instead of blue walls and she is very much over the color pink.  So.. time for a bedroom makeover!  We have a general idea/direction for this room and will be taking it one step at a time.  I will share progress as we go.. we are off to a good start!

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

I took this pic on her first day of school this year.  My girls have been doing school from home in their bedrooms since March and I have to say that I have strong love/hate relationship with the whole situation!  I could write an entire blog post about just that so I’ll move on for now, but let me just say that when I put desks in their bedrooms I had NO idea they would get the kind of use they are getting!  Because she spends so much time each day in this little corner we decided to tackle it first.  I originally had my carpenter make the desks for my girls’ bedrooms because I couldn’t find desks that fit in the small corner of their bedrooms.  They both have little corners I wanted to use for desks but regular sized desks wouldn’t fit.  Addison really wanted a white desk so I was planning on just painting her pink desk white and then a few weeks ago it broke!  Ha.  That bottom piece between the legs came off!  An easy fix, but I decided it was a sign so I pulled up my computer to see if I could find a white desk.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

{parsons desk/plush velvet office chair/gold table lamp/gold pencil holder}

I honestly jumped for joy when I came across this white desk from Walmart!  It’s simple with clean lines, was a great price and the best part.. it was JUST the right size!  I kept searching and also found her a more comfortable chair and a cute little desk lamp.  Walmart for the win!  They always have great options for kids’ spaces!  (Check out Kole’s organized bedroom and closet for more ideas too!)

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

This fun snowflake art has been up in her room since November. :)  We are going to switch it out for something else in the Spring OR when we re-paint.. whichever comes sooner!

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

Isn’t this the cutest little gold lamp!?  I didn’t want anything that would take up a lot of room and this small lamp packs a lot of style.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

She loves her new plush chair!  So much more comfortable than what she has been using and it will be fun to bring more gold into this space.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

I have a fun way to hide that black lamp cord that I’ll share too, but I’m going to wait until after we paint the walls.  We are off to a good start with a new desk space!

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

Absolutely perfect for this little corner.  Below are other desks I saw and loved!  They are too big for this space but would be beautiful in a bedroom with a little more room than we have for a desk!

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

Next up for her room was to get it clean!  Addison always keeps her room clean, but her closet is another story.  Ha.  It was looking pretty rough and I knew we needed to clean it out but I had been putting it off!  When kids’ closets get really bad they usually need some help because it’s so overwhelming for them to even know where/how to start.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

I always start by pulling every single thing out other than the clothes.  I’m always surprised just how much can fit in kids’ closets!  I had Addison start going through books and told her to just keep the books she really loves or wants to read again.  Time to pass the rest on to someone else to enjoy!  While she sorted books I took some soapy water and cleaned off all of her shelves and closet rods.  We cleaned and sorted and purged for hours!  All of the random stuff first and then we moved on to clothes.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

About 4 months ago I also installed these silver hooks in her closet!  The white wood was already there and I knew it would give us some vertical storage.  After we had gone through everything in her closet (and made many Goodwill piles) it was time to put it all back!  My forever favorite part of the organizing process. :)

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

Ready to see the after?  We honestly got rid of SO much!  It just feels CLEAN.. the best!  We have absolutely nothing on these top shelves.  I added these cute blue storage bins (I also have them in navy in Kole’s closet) for anything she wants to store in the future so her shelves don’t look like they are full of clutter again.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

Then we were ruthless when we went though her clothes!  We only kept what she really loves/wears.  Dresses are on the far left with the few books she kept on the shelf on the top.  We also have her yearbooks on that shelf.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

Then we hung jackets/robes on the left top and sweaters/long sleeved tops on the bottom.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

On the top right we hung all of her hoodies and on the bottom we hung tanks/short sleeved tops.  I always just go from lights to darks when I’m organizing clothes in closets.  The drawers are organized too with all of her pjs, exercise clothes, skirts, socks, etc.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

{natural seagrass and rope baskets/woven storage baskets}

Then we tackled the open shelves and I’m so excited about how this wall turned out!  I used these natural seagrass and rope baskets (2 large on the bottom and 4 medium above them) on her shelves.  One of the large baskets on the bottom is her laundry hamper and the other one holds all of her Bearded Dragon supplies (we have one pretty pampered lizard at our house). ;)  The other baskets hold seasonal items like Christmas pjs and all of her swimsuits  They also hold things like sewing items, etc.  Stuff she wants to keep but doesn’t use all the time.  We also put 4 of these cute woven storage baskets on the top shelves and they hold keepsakes and other miscellaneous items.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

The hooks are fabulous and I can’t believe I didn’t think to add them sooner!

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

Her purses are on the top.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

We are using the bottom hooks for accessories – things like scarves, belts, masks, ribbons, etc.  We gave so much away that she doesn’t have too many accessories at the moment!  These would also work great for necklaces/jewelry.

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

I’m so happy to have her closet organized!  Feels so good!  We both just keep going inside and staring at it.. ha!  I know it will be easy for her to keep clean now that we set up a better storage system for her.

Her desk area and closet were at the top of my list of to-dos for her bedroom and I’m so happy to have them checked off!

Teen desk and organized closet (Sunny Side Up)

Stay tuned for what’s coming next in her bedroom.  I’ll give you a hint.. it involves my carpenter and BFF Chuck! :)
