4th of July Favorites!

4th of July Finds (Sunny Side Up)

Hello hello!  We’re back.  We took a quick family vacation to Colorado last week once the kids were all out of school and it felt so good to kick off summer by taking a break from the routine and spending time in the great outdoors. :)  It really was such a fun trip with the kids so I’m going to share a post soon on what we did.  I’m always looking for fun new places to visit with the family and this was a trip I would highly recommend!  I’ve been busy the past two days getting unpacked, laundry and groceries done and prepping for a new summer routine.  So excited for slower days!  I have some fun projects I’m working on that I’m excited to share and one of them is sprucing things up around here for the 4th of July.

{4th of July Outdoor Decor}

We usually go to Utah for the 4th to spend it with family but with the way our vacations fell we are going to be home this year so I’m excited to pull out all of the red, white and blue!

4th of July Finds (Sunny Side Up)

I spent some time looking on-line for fun ideas for decorating and things to wear and there are so many cute things in right now I thought I’d share them with you!  A lot of them are on sale before they’re gone for the holiday.  YEA.

4th of July Finds (Sunny Side Up)

So if you’re looking for some fun dishes for your summer BBQ or the perfect shirt and shoes to wear for that 4th of July parade I’ve got you covered. :)  All of my favorites for the 4th are linked below!

p.s.  So happy to hear that many of you enjoy the simple organizing posts!  Excited to check off my “to-organize” list and share the progress.  Bring on summer! :)

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

We made it!  Two of my kids have been out all week and tomorrow is my oldest daughter’s last day of school.  I’m picking her up around noon after her French final and we are officially DONE.  I swear we are always the last people on the planet to finish the school year!  But I guess it makes the victory that much sweeter. :)  To officially kick off our summer I’m sharing some organized kitchen cabinets with you all today!  I know.. I’m a party ANIMAL.  Ha.  Really though, sometimes posts like this with a few simple before and afters are just the motivation I need to inspire more organizing and I have a list of spaces I’m determined to tackle this summer!  The above cupboard was how my cabinet looked about a year ago.  Nice and organized with my older dishes.

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

But before long it was looking a little disheveled and getting new dishes this year (this set and this set) made me excited to whip it back in shape!

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

I love pulling things out of my kitchen cupboards and giving them a good wipe down.  Nothing like a clean slate!

And now?

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

Ta-da!  Such a happy cupboard.  I smile every time I open it!  And I open and close this particular cupboard A LOT.  It has really made me think about how it’s especially important to organize the spaces in our homes we are in and out of constantly throughout each day.  That little pick me up every time you encounter an organized space can make a big difference in your overall mood and sanity.  Especially if you’re opening that organized cupboard to fix your kids snack #356.

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

Summer.. I’m ready for you.  You will NOT get the best of me this year!

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

Next to my main dish cupboard is a skinny cupboard that holds all of our glasses/mugs.  I gave it a quick clean out too.  Don’t ask me why I have some cups facing up and some facing down.  I’m a mystery even to myself at times.

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

Then I pulled out all of our silverware and washed out the containers and drawer and put it back together nice and organized.  (I’m loving these cute salad servers btw if you need a good set!  And this is hands down the best pizza cutter.  Trust me on this one.  We eat A LOT of pizza.)

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

Do you see how there are only 6 pink bowls in this cupboard?  I’m so sad.  I dropped one and broke it last week!

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

It’s from this cute set of dishes I used for my Spring/Summer tablescape and I need 8 for this table!  Bummed I couldn’t just buy a new bowl.. I had to order another set of 4.  I guess at least now I’ll have back-ups when if I break more.

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

These pink bowls have become favorites for morning cereal and were also fun to use for a little ice cream sundae bar for Addison and some friends last week so really I’m happy to have extras!

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

Sweetest girls.  Love them.

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

I was on a roll with my organized dishes so I decided to tackle the cupboards above our micro drawer.  They hold extra dishes and whatever my kids toss in them and are usually a mess!  Above is a lovely “before.”

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

And after.. so much better!  I got rid of a lot of dishes and canisters I wasn’t using anymore.  I love having only the things I really use in my cupboards.  Best feeling!

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

The cupboards below roll back and hold our most used small appliances.

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

Here’s a pic of this section of my kitchen.  I’m hoping to give the lower cabinets a little re-fresh soon!

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

I got my pots and pans under control in January.

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

And I cleaned up the these drawers below my open shelving a couple of months ago.  I use them to hold my nice dish towels, flower food packs and extra random kitchen gadgets.  (Trays and bowls are a great solution to corral like items inside of drawers!)

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

The cupboards below I also organized in January and they still look the same.  You know you’ve set up a good system when it’s easy to KEEP it organized after the initial clean out.

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

So that’s it!  Kicking off the summer with some organized cupboards and drawers in the kitchen!  It’s a good feeling.

Do you all like posts like this one sharing simple organizing?

I tend to do a lot of organizing in the summer for a few reasons.  1 – We’re home more.. which I love!  Less running around to all the activities and more of my kids just hanging out with each other and friends which gives me small pockets of time for organizing.  2 – Summer can be hard in terms of productivity when you’re entertaining kids all day and organizing something quick gives me that accomplished feeling.  I’ve learned that is really important for my overall mood/happiness.  (I spoke more about this in my 10 habits of happy moms post!)  And 3 – It’s a control thing for me.  I may not be able to control the chaos and constant mess circling around me during the summer, but you better believe I can control what my pots and pans and dishes look like inside the cupboard!

Kind of silly.. but it helps. :)  So let me know if you want me to share more posts like this one!

Organized Kitchen Cupboards (Sunny Side Up)

I mentioned on the phone to Kenny the day I broke my pink bowl that I was bummed because I needed a set of 8 and now I just had 7.  When he got home that night and opened the cupboard to get out a plate he noticed there were 6 and said “I though you only broke one bowl.. was it two?  Why are there only 6 pink bowls in here?”  My response?  “I mean.. look how organized that cupboard is.. I wasn’t going to put 3 pink bowls on one side next to 4 on the other.  It would have thrown everything off.  That would be crazy.”  Then I got that slightly worried side eye look he always gives me when my OCD tendencies come out to play and he answered “yeah.. THAT would be crazy.”

It really would!

The craziest.

Father’s Day Gift Guide

Father’s Day always sneaks up on me because it hits right when we are just finishing the school year around here!  I had a mild panic attack this Monday morning with all the things I needed to wrap up and get done this week.  (I’m sure many of you moms have felt the same!)  It has been busy, but Friday is near and I can feel the load lifting as each to-do and end of the year activity gets crossed off the list.  I always get a little nostalgic and emotional this time of year too.  So crazy to have another school year behind us.. they are flying by way too quickly!  I’m so excited to have time with my kids this summer.  I’m also excited for some down time with their dad!  I don’t want to forget my sweet husband during all of this craziness so it’s probably a good thing that Father’s Day shopping happens in the middle of it all. :)  I hope this gift guide is helpful for you!  It’s full of all the things that my husband already has and loves along with things I’m getting for him this year.  He knows not to read this post. :)  Dads do so much.. it’s a treat to spoil them on their special day!

Father's Day Gift Guide (Sunny Side Up)

1 –  Endurance/Into Thin Air – Books are always a safe bet for dads and these are two best sellers that look so good!  Excited to give them to Kenny this year.

2 – Zella Zip Front Hoodie – A perfect hoodie for weekends or workouts!  My husband has one that is similar and wears it all the time.  Zella is always a win!  This is my second favorite if you want to spend less (60% off!).

3 – Hayward Air Backpack – Ahhh!  This awesome backpack is half off for just over $30!  I just ordered it. :)  My husband always uses his backpacks for hikes and travel.

4 – Nonstick Steel Grill Cookware Set – Ordering this for my husband because I want it for me!  Such good reviews.. these look amazing for summer cooking!

5 – Gskyer Telescope – I’m always looking for fun activities that my husband will enjoy doing with my kids and this telescope looks amazing.  Kole is so into space right now and I know the two of them would love exploring the stars and moon together!

6 – Volcom Board Shorts and Rainbow Flip Flops – Perfect gifts for dad to welcome summer!  My husband likes both of these brands for suits and flip flops.

7 – Dad Bod T-Shirt – For the dad who loves a laugh!  A fun tee to wear at the park or pool with the kids. :)

8 – Bose Wireless Sport Headphones – These are all the rage!  If your husband is a runner he will love these.  Sweat resistant and perfect for exercise!

9 – Stud Finder – Every handy dad needs a handy stud finder. :)  One of my gifts for Kenny last year!

10 – Self-Leveling Green Cross Line Laser – This Laser Level Tool is a must have for home decor lovers!  Or for those married to home decor lovers.  Makes hanging ALL the things a breeze!

11 – Adidas Sneakers – I LIVE in my black Adidas sneakers (similar to these) so Kenny is getting this pair for father’s day so we can twin.  I know twinning with me is a priority for him and I live to serve.  Ha.

12 – Ecco Soft Lace-Up Sneakers – I’ve shared these before because they are such great shoes.  Kenny has three pairs (the black, brown and blue) and I gave a pair to my bother for Christmas (he loves them too!).  They look great with jeans and are so comfortable.  Worth the price, but if you love them and want to spend less, this blue pair is half off!

13 – Slim-Fit Luxe Poplin Shirt – These slim-fit shirts from BR are my husband’s favorite!  I love this color on him in the summer. :)

14 – GoSports Cornhole Bean Bag Toss Game – Another fun activity for dad and the kids!  Our foosball table I mentioned in my playroom progress post is also a hit and a fun gift idea for dads.

15 – Smartcare Flat Front Shorts – I love all things “smart care” from Nordstrom because it means NO wrinkles!  These shorts come in lots of colors and have high reviews.  Perfect summer wear for dads!

16 – 4-Piece BBQ Tool Set and Storage Case – You can’t have a Father’s Day Gift Guide without a BBQ tool set so here is mine. ;)  Really though.. always a fun gift.  I gave Kenny a very similar set from WS a few years ago and he uses it all the time.  Can’t wait for summer grilling!

17 – Men’s Shop Polo – Another go-to gift for Father’s Day.  You can’t go wrong with a great polo!  A staple for men and this particular polo is a great fit and comes in lots of colors.

18 – Weight Set – A fun gift option if your husband/dad wants to get in shape but doesn’t have time for the gym.  There are so many fun sets to choose from!  Kenny pulls his arm weights like these out in front of the TV at night often and lifts while we watch TV and I blog.  We eat popcorn at the same time and are master multi-taskers.  Ha.

19 – Flat Weight Bench (this bench also looks like another good option!) – Great for dad to get a full body workout from home!

20 – Modular Garage Tool Organizer – You all know how much I love a good organizer and this is perfect to keep tools organized and handy in the garage.   I also have a hardware cabinet like this one that I love for all of the loose hardware!  I’m sure my husband loves them as much as I do.  Well.. almost as much. ;)

Playroom Update!

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

I mentioned a couple of posts ago that I am giving my playroom a little re-fresh!  To be honest I never really decorated this room after we moved in.  I just tossed in some furniture we kept from our previous house, organized the toy closet, set up the tepee and we were ready to roll. :)

Organized Playroom Closet (Sunny Side Up)

{Original Organized Playroom Post}

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

This room has been such a fun space for my kids and their friends.

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

A happy room they have used to play and pretend and create and mess up and clean up and mess up again.

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

But my kids are getting older and the pretend play is slowing down (tear).  Our theatre room is right next to this room and this space has become more of a teen hangout room when my kids have friends over.  It was due for an update!

*affiliate links used

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

So here is what this space looked like “before”.. when it was clean. :)

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

And this is what it’s looking like today!  Obviously not done.. but progress has been made!  The biggest progress was going through all of the toys and just keeping favorites and toys that Kole (my youngest) still plays with.  An emotional job for me (and my girls!) but now that it’s done it feels so good to have space in this room to breathe.  I gave my large yellow hutch to a close friend and feel so good that it’s in a happy home.  It had become a junk collector in this room and was taking up so much space.  I knew it had to go, but it was another sentimental item that was hard to part with.  Letting go of sentimental items can be the hardest part of organizing, but it has to be done if we want to have homes that aren’t full of clutter and that truly serve our family’s current needs.

That’s what I keep reminding myself anyway. :)

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

So!  Now that the hard part is over.. it’s time for the fun part.  Decorating!  The biggest change so far is the new couch!  I considered a lot of different couches for this space and ended up going with this Cushy Lounge Sectional from PB Teen.  I wanted something kid friendly and I love how this couch is modern, casual, comfy and low to the ground.  It comes in lots of fabrics and colors and I chose the navy faux suede.  So fun to mix it up and have a colorful couch!

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

Kenny and I camped out in the playroom late one night watching a movie and putting it together.  Well.  He put the couch together.  I watched the movie and assisted.  And by assisted I mean that I took pictures. :)

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

There are a few options for the base of this couch and I chose the Cushy Lounge Pedestal Base because I like the square legs.  I chose Weathered White for the base color.  It was pretty simple to assemble and the cushions just sit on top of the square bases.

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

I got an extra square for an ottoman..

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

but the coolest part of this couch is that you can slide the square cushions together and make one big couch bed.  Kole is in heaven with this configuration. :)

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

I also couldn’t help snatching up this cute Awning Stripe Throw (on sale!).  It comes in other colors and is so cute for summer!  I know I’m jumping ahead of myself getting a throw for the couch before I’m finished with the main furniture, but those are the fun things I love looking for when I decorate a new space.  I’m always anxious to get to the pillow and throw part of the job. :)

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

My next favorite find is this cute Callum Triple Wide Storage Set.

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

I knew once the yellow hutch was gone I would lose a lot of storage in this room.  I didn’t need a lot more because I have the closet and pull out drawers in our wall, but I have plans for those and wanted a few extra spots for the kids’ stuff.  This console is perfect!  Drawers on the bottom for random toys.

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

And then I ordered 3 of these cute Shimmer Stripe Bins to go in the openings for additional storage.  Perfect place to hide Kole’s video game controls.

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

I love how narrow this is on the side.. it’s perfect for wall space under a TV.  It adds a lot of storage without taking up much room.  I found and ordered this on-line when I ordered the couch and I’m so excited about them both!

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

The Foosball table is new and is staying in this room.  We gave this to Kole for his birthday in March.  He has wanted one for a while and we debated spending more on a really nice table for this room, but I just wasn’t sure how much Kole would actually play it.  When I found this less expensive Foosball table with great reviews I decided to get it for now knowing we can update it later if he becomes a serious Foosball player.  The funny part is that Addison and I are becoming the serious Foosball players.  We honestly love this thing and play it every day!  Ha.  We’re trying to practice and get good enough to beat Kenny and Kole.  It hasn’t happened yet but it will.  We are determined.  It will happen!  I have no doubt our day will come. :)

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

I have a light fixture coming soon.  I’m laughing at myself that I never bought one for this room!  I thought I’d do it soon after we moved in.  5 years later.. one is on its way. :)

Playroom Update (Sunny Side Up)

I also have a rug on its way.  I’m not sure if I’ll love it in this room or not!  I can’t ever really tell with rugs until they are in my spaces and I can see how they look.  I mentioned before that I tried this diamond pattern rug that I love and is still sitting in the room, but it’s heading to my outdoor area.

So that’s where I’m at with the playroom!  I hope you all like the updates so far. :)  I’ll share pics of the rug and fixture when they come (if they are staying!) and I have some fun plans for the walls in this room that I need to get working on.  We are wrapping up school this week and next and then I’m hoping I’ll have time to finish the playroom and theatre room (otherwise known as the kid zones!) so that they will be ready for ALL the friends coming over this summer.

Bring on the kids!

And send them upstairs.

;)

Summer Living Room Decor (I hereby declare)

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Happy Monday!  Oh wait.. it’s a Tuesday.  Isn’t that the best!?  I hereby declare that every weekend should be a 3 day weekend and every work week should start on a Tuesday.  If only I had that power. :)  I snapped some pictures of my living room in its current state a few days ago.  I’ve been working on a few of our upstairs rooms lately so I haven’t done as much seasonal decorating, but a few small changes for summer are making me happy so I thought I’d share. :)

*All room sources are at the end of the post!  Affiliate links are used.  If you have questions about my paint colors you can download a printable with all of my home colors HERE.

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

My summer gallery wall pictures are up and new pillows are always a quick and easy way to update a room!

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

I shared these pillows in my Memorial weekend sale post.  The texture!  Don’t underestimate the power of texture and how much personality it brings into your space.  Also I’m clearly having a thing for navy right now.  I mean.. I’ve always had a thing for navy.  But currently there is more navy in my home than ever before.  It’s just speaking to me at the moment.  And when a color speaks to me.. I listen.  Unlike my husband who I tend to tune out.  Kidding!  Kind of. ;)

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Hydrangeas!  My favorite flower.  Summer just wouldn’t be summer without fresh hydrangeas.  I always just pick them up at the grocery store.  Milk, eggs, hydrangeas, bread, fruit, popsicles, popcorn.. a day in the life. :)

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

I styled my shelves with a lot of neutrals and then just added a few pops of coral and pink throughout the room.  These shelves are hands down the hardest for me to style!  Practice makes perfect.. or so they say.  Sometimes when it comes to me and shelf styling I feel like practice makes slightly better than the last time with a long way to go until perfect.  But I’ll take it.  And I know it’s a bit redundant to have a throw over each chair but you know what?  I love my throws!  And I couldn’t decide which one to use in this room so I used them both.  I hereby declare that you can never have too many throws.  I actually do have the power on that one.  In my house at least. :)

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

This room is always my favorite room in the summer.  Moms can you guess why?  It’s the only room in my house that stays clean.  It’s the first room you see when you walk into our home and it’s away from the main living areas so it’s usually safe from Kole’s 27 stuffed animals, El’s 14 water bottles and Addison’s 9 jars of slime.  Sometimes I escape to this room in the summer and just sit on the couch or a chair (with a throw) and enjoy the clean while I count backwards from 20.

19.. 18.. 17..

and then I take a deep breath and head back to the slime.

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

This room might be ready for summer, but am I?

Summer Living Room Decor (Sunny Side Up)

I hereby declare that this summer my kids will all get along and be perfectly content to entertain themselves.  Their rooms will stay organized and they will fix their own snacks/meals and clean up after each one.  They will do morning chores with a smile and will spend afternoons reading and in deep thought about how to better their home, school, community and country.

I hereby declare.

:)

Our weekend and my favorites on sale!

Memorial Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

{Similar black pots/navy striped porch rug/Hello mat} *affiliate links used

Happy Sunday everyone!  I hope you’re all enjoying some down time this weekend.  I’m so grateful for this special time to spend with my family and remember and honor those who have died while serving our country.  I bought this flag about a year ago and finally installed it so that I could put it up this weekend.  Seeing it every time I pull up to our house makes me feel so proud and grateful for the people who have served and continue to serve our country.  I always feel that way but I’m loving the constant reminder.

Memorial Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

Today was the first day in a long time that we didn’t have much going on.  It was also the first time we’ve had sun this week!  It was such a nice low key family day.  We watched movies and swam in the pool (I think Kole could use one more ball in that hot tub..) and went on a drive and had milkshakes and I did a little organizing.  I mean really.. does it get any better than that? :)

Memorial Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

I was picking up the kitchen at one point and walked into the family room and saw this fun scene.  Patriotic decor by Kole.  I figured we could all gain a few take aways from this look to use for the 4th of July.  You’ll definitely want to pin this and refer to it often.  My couch has never looked so festive and inviting.  Ha. ;)  I love that boy.

Memorial Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

I shared this Feta and Tomato dip recipe on IG stories but wanted to add it here for anyone who missed it!  One of my favorite things to take to BBQs and to snack on in the summer.  So easy and delicious!  You can find the recipe here.

Memorial Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

You guys.. I’m giving our playroom a little re-fresh and I’m so excited about it!  Making it more of a teen space now that my kids are getting older.  I bought this new rug and was going to share it when the room was a little further along, but it’s on sale for such an amazing deal this weekend (less than I bought it for!) so I wanted to share it now in case any of you love it too.  It’s the Reflected Diamond rug from West Elm.  I debated using it in the playroom, but now I’m thinking I’ll put it in our outdoor area to replace the rug that we’ve had there the past few years.  I’m so grateful for all of the rain we’ve had this year but my outdoor rug has seen better days!  I’ll share more playroom progress soon.

Memorial Weekend Sales (Sunny Side Up)

There are so many fun sales going on this weekend and I’ve rounded up favorites from my go-to stores (like these pillows I’m loving in my living room!).  These are all things I have and love or are things I would love to pick up myself!  Quite a few of them I already have. :)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Cleaning Favorites (9 under 90!)

Spring Cleaning Favorites (Sunny Side Up)

Happy Friday everyone!  What a week.  It was full of teenage nerves and emotions at our house with lots of things for my girls ending and tryouts for new things about to start.  Kole looked up at me at one point during the week and said “mom.. I think it’s about time that you me and dad move out…”  Ha!  The funny part was that he wasn’t kidding and we almost took him up on his offer. ;)  Thankfully we all survived the week and will live to tell about it, but this mom is looking forward to a calmer week ahead!

When I do have busy, stressful weeks I tend to turn to my go-to stress reliever.. cleaning and organizing!  After girlfriend time it’s the best therapy out there. :)  I thought it would be fun to share a few recent favorites in that category for my 9 under 90 series!

Spring Cleaning Favorites (Sunny Side Up)

(All products are linked below!  Affiliate links are used.)

1 – Micro Cleaning Cloths    2 – Scrub Daddy Scrubbers   3 – Bona (4 piece hardwood floor care system)  4 – Fridge and Freezer Bins  5 – Handheld Cordless Vacuum  6 – Battery Organizer Storage Case  7 – Mop and Broom Holder  8 – Pantry Labels  9 – Wayfair Basics Laundry Sorter

Number 1 and 2 my friends have raved about so I just ordered them both to try.  Number 3 is my all time favorite for cleaning my wood floors.  I have this exact set and have used and loved it since we moved into our new house!  I just replace the main cleaner when I run out.  (You can buy refills on Amazon or at Costco).  Number 4 is a great deal on fridge organization favorites.  Number 5 is an absolute staple.  Number 6 is a recent favorite I’m loving that I shared in this favorites post.  Number 7 is a must have for broom/mop organization.  Number 8 – the cutest pantry labels I found for a steal!  And number 9 – these are on sale and a perfect solution to get your laundry under control.  I love my built-in hampers so much and these are the next best thing if you don’t have the room for built-ins.

I hope you enjoyed my 9 recent favorites!  I’d love to hear if any of these are also on  your favorites list!?

Spring Cleaning Favorites (Sunny Side Up)

I got this Dyson handheld vacuum in the Fall and I’ve loved it so much!  I use it almost every day for quick cleaning.  I’m buying the one I shared above (less expensive and it has great reviews) to keep in my bedroom/bathroom.  Handheld vacuums are perfect to have close by for cleaning out drawers, the car, small spills, etc.  I’m a fan. :)

My last (and first!) 9 under 90 post was on cute Spring sandals and you can find links for all of the above sandals here if you missed it!

Also thank you for all of the kind words about my last tablescape post!  I linked all of the dishes, etc. in that post but was flooded with questions about all of the other larger room sources so I’ll share links to them below!  My table was from Restoration Hardware, but I’ll also link a less expensive farmhouse table that I found and love.

I hope you have a great Friday!  I have more to share with you all this weekend so pop back in soon!  I’m looking forward to a few days of less driving and less drama.  Fingers crossed that will be the case because I’m finally getting around to decorating a few spaces that have been on my list for years!  It would be a serious shame if Kole makes me move out before I have time to finish.

Spring/Summer Tablescape

*Huge thank you to Walmart for sponsoring this post! (Affiliate links used)
Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)We are a low key family when it comes to meals and most of the time we eat dinner gathered around our kitchen island, outside when it’s warm or sometimes for me (when things are really busy like during the crazy month of May) fine dining takes place in my car. :)  I know this about us so when we built our house I told my husband that we didn’t need a formal dining room.  That it wouldn’t get used much and was a waste of space.  He insisted that we add one to the plans and I have to say.. that is one debate I’m happy I lost!  I have loved our formal dining room!  This space gives me the opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone and entertain more.  I used to never have people over to eat because I’m not a great cook and it always seemed too expensive and so much work.

Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)

I have found that is absolutely not true!  Once I got past my own fears and just started doing it more I realized that it doesn’t matter what you’re serving or how fancy your table looks.  It’s really just about bringing people together to relax, talk and enjoy each other’s company.  I’ve had friends over to just have a big chicken salad for lunch or in the evening for pizza, chips and diet cokes!  I’ve also learned that it’s not hard to set a beautiful tablescape for guests without spending much.

Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)This entire Spring/Summer tablescape is from Walmart!  Walmart you guys.  I’m obsessed!

These beautiful pink and coral dishes are the Vintage Floral dinnerware set from the Flower Line Walmart did in collaboration with Drew Barrymore.  I’ve been adding pops of navy, coral and pink to my home for the past couple of years so I was thrilled when I found these!  (They also come in just pink and navy if you aren’t into coral.)  I got new simple white dishes for my birthday this year and had been looking for a fun floral set to entertain with that didn’t cost too much.  These are beautiful!  I’m finally passing on the dishes we’ve been using for over 20 years since our wedding.

Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)

I love the larger simple plates too for every day.  The set comes with these two plates, a pink bowl and a small navy bowl.  I also got these cute gingham placemats from Walmart and love them with the floral plates!  Gingham and floral is a fun summer combo.  The gingham would be cute for the 4th of July too!

Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)

The clear glass vases I used for my centerpiece are also from Walmart.  The two side vases were only $4 each!  I picked up some flowers from the grocery store to make these arrangements but you could also just pop in some flowers or branches from your yard.  I thought it might be fun to add some after dinner chocolates inside the small navy bowls. :)

Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)

Another favorite Walmart find are these cute gingham pillows!  You guys.. I’m not joking – they are big and such amazing quality for $12!  They come in other colors too.  My friends didn’t believe me that all of this was from Walmart.  I hardly believe it myself!

Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)

I also picked up this pretty pink throw to drape over my chair.

Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)

I found this beautiful navy vase for my console table and the navy ceramic side table is also from the Flower Line collection.  I keep moving it around because it looks good in so many of my spaces.. outside too!  I bought the coral ombre ceramic table for my family room.  I LOVE them and they cost so much less than I’ve spend on similar garden stools.  I still need to style my console table more but I’m so happy to have my art up!  This room is finally coming together.

I moved one of my faux fig trees in this corner of the room and this macrame basket was perfect to hold it!

Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)

This basket is one of three (they came in a set) and I’m going to use the other two in our playroom or the kids’ rooms for stylish storage.  So cute.. the Flower Line has these baskets in several color options!  I’m telling you this line is too much fun.

Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)

The new art I got for my family room is also part of the Flower Line!

Spring/Summer Dining Tablescape (Sunny Side Up)

I hope you all like this Spring/Summer tablescape!  The colors make me so happy.  We are nearing the end of the school year and are in serious countdown mode.  2 weeks for Addison, 2 1/2 weeks for Kole and 3 weeks for Ellie.  Easy breezy summer days are calling my name!

Time to get my husband grilling!

I’ll set the table. :)

Fashion Friday (Spring/Summer Favorites!)

*Huge thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post!  Our one stop shop for clothes this Spring/Summer. :)  Affiliate links used.
Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

{Celine Throw}

Happy Friday everyone!  Or Saturday, Sunday or Monday depending on when you read this. :)  Made it through another week in May.. success!  I really don’t like to wish away time but I have to admit.. I’m excited to get to the end of this busy month!  Lazy days by the pool are calling my name and I’m ready to answer. :)  I can’t thank you all enough for the kind, uplifting comments, emails, DM’s, etc. after my last 10 Habits of Happy Moms post.  I’m thrilled that so many of you enjoyed that post and that it resonated with you.  I also loved hearing from so many of you!  Blogging can feel lonely sometimes!  Just me and my projects, pictures and computer working away :) so I especially love days when I get to interact with you all.  I’m very grateful for your kind words and support!  I say this a lot but it really does mean so much to me.

Fashion Friday is on the agenda today!  I actually started my Fashion Friday posts years ago after I had Kole (my last baby).  I had worked hard to exercise and eat healthy and lose most of the baby weight and was excited to be DONE with maternity clothes.  I wanted to have a big party to watch them all burn!  Ha. ;)  I learned quickly after becoming a stay at home mom that I was always in a better mood when I got ready for the day.  (Another happiness tip that I briefly touched on in my last post.. looking your best so that you can feel your best.)  I started these posts to help motivate me to get dressed and ready each day!  Even if my only outing was a trip to the grocery store I just felt better about myself and in a better mood when my hair was done and I had on real clothes and a little make-up.

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

Those early Fashion Friday posts are hilarious to me now!

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

Aside from the poor picture quality Kole makes a lovely debut in almost every picture.

He has always worked hard to make things so easy for me. ;)

Fashion Friday posts still help me with that to this day.  When you work from home and have an obsession with pajamas and being comfortable it can be really tempting to just not get ready.  But I’ve always found that while that feels good at first, it usually leads to a slumpy day for me.  I don’t make as good of food choices when I’m in baggy pj’s or sweats and I don’t have the energy and confidence I have when I feel good about how I look.  It’s a powerful thing!  How we look affects how we feel and how we feel directly affects how we treat others.  Don’t underestimate the power of a good hair day, killer jeans and a cute new top!  If you need ideas on the cute new tops.. you’ve come to the right place. :)

The clothes I’m sharing today are all recent favorites from Nordstrom!  They have so many beautiful clothes and accessories in right now for Spring/Summer.  It’s down right dangerous.  In the best way possible.

{Blue Flower Blouse/Ag Jeans here and here/Raine Espadrille Sandal/Beaded Tassel Earrings}

Cutest floral blouse for summer!  It’s lightweight and so feminine.  I wore it last week with a skirt and it looks really cute tucked in more fitted too.

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

{Favorite shoes for summer!  Rain Platform Espadrille Sandals/Andela Slingback Espadrille Wedge/Alida Espadrille Platform Wedge/Adalyn Espadrille Wedge Sandal/Despina Strappy Sandal}

The cute wedges I’m wearing above in the first pic are these Rain Espadrille Sandals.  I ordered them in the blush and the sand color and have been living in them this Spring.  The scallop detail is so cute and they are REALLY comfortable!  I love that they look good casual with jeans/shorts but have enough detail that they look good with dresses/skirts too.  I also have a huge crush on all of the fun Marc Fisher Wedges!  Another really comfortable summer wedge that comes in lots of fun colors.  My Despina Strappy Sandals I’ve had for a few years and still love to pull them out every Spring.

{Gingham Shirt/Ag Jeans here and here/Beaded Tassel Earrings/Similar Black Sandals}

You guys.  Seriously.  I know I sound like a broken record but I just can’t get enough of Madewell!  I’ve been working on cleaning my closet (for over a year now.. ha) and am honesty considering devoting one whole section to Madewell clothes.   This brand just speaks to me.  How cute is this Gingham top!?

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

{Hi-Fi Placed Striped Tee/Marin Sweater/Raffia Tassel Hoop Earrings/Skyline Stripe Rainbow Tee}

And I can’t get enough of all things RAINBOW!  Look at the cute shoes they have in right now.. and that necklace.  No way could I pick just one favorite..

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

{Tory Burch Double Wrap Bracelet/Madewell Leather Tote}

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

I have so many favorite earrings right now and these Raffia Tassel Hoop Earrings are at the top of my list!  So cute for summer and a great price for the quality.

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

{Sincerely Jules Straw Bag}

This cute fitted tee comes in blue too and selling fast!  No surprise there.  Perfect casual top for summer!  And my Sincerely Jules Woven Shoulder Bag is back!  I carried this all over Maui and so many of you were bummed it was sold out when I shared pics of it.  YEA that it’s back in stock!  Goes so cute with the Raffia earrings. :)

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

This Marin Sweater is a little more Fallish looking but it’s such a great fit you guys.  I just ordered this one in Pearl Ivory stripe (more of a summer look) because I love it so much!  I love the neck and the sleeves.  It’s so soft and comfortable.  Fitted enough to give you a shape, but not tight.  PERFECT.

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

The reason I’m loving it so much is that it’s just a different version of my all time favorite Marin Tie Front Sweater that I have in green.  I have the similar Modern tie front tee in lilac and I just ordered this one in Pearl Ivory.  Go ahead.  Try just buying ONE of these sweaters.  Not possible. ;)

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

Speaking of Madewell favorites.. my Denim Daylily dress is back!  I got this in the fall and wore it with boots but I’m so excited to wear it with sandals for Summer!  I always get compliments on this dress when I wear it.  Madewell I’m forever yours.  Here are a few other favorites on my wish list..

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

Cute Botton Front Knot Hem Tee.  Also comes in grey!

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

This Embroidered Slub Knit Tank is another recent favorite.  I love cap sleeve tanks and this one comes in so many fun colors!  Would be really cute in white too.

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

And how cute are these Resin Triangle Drop Earrings!?  They are beautiful in person!  And so fun with this green tank.. really with anything green, blue or white!  Madewell of course.  Sorry but not sorry. :)

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

Cute Sunetta Oracle Fitted Tee!  Florals are always fun this time of year.

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

Ok.. next favorite summer top on the list.. this white Pleat Linen Blouse.  I love the pleats!  One of my biggest pet peeves with white tops is when they are too thin and see through.  This blouse is thick so it’s not see through at all – a relaxed fit – and has such pretty details on the sleeves and neck.  It also comes in pink and grey!

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

Aren’t the sleeves pretty!?  I had to get a quick picture after I finished these flower arrangements for a tablescape I’m sharing soon!  I was quite proud of them because I sort of fake my way through flower arrangements.  Ha.

Hydrangeas, white linen tees and plants in my kitchen window.  Must be summer!

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

These Marinella Fringe Drop Earrings are also really cute for summer!

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

I’ve also been wearing my white blouse with these casual Linen Jogger Pants.  These are so comfortable and light weight for summer.  You all know how I feel about joggers!  They are basically dressy sweats.  You FEEL and look good, but also get the comfort factor.  And that’s precisely why I’m a fan. :)

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

{Beaded Tassel Earrings/Marinella Fringe Drop Earrings /Oversize Orchid Earrings/Raffia Tassel Hoop Earrings/Similar White Tassel Earrings/Resin Triangle Drop Earrings}

I’m so into fun earrings right now!  They really add that extra something to every outfit.  These are my recent favorites that will be on repeat all summer!

Fashion Friday (Sunny Side Up)

{Linear Drop Earrings/gold hoops sold out – I love these flower hoops too}

I also just got these in the mail today!  They are both from Rachel Parcel’s new collection.  So pretty.

{INDOORSY Graphic Tee/Similar Black Adidas Sneaker}

Since we can’t end the post on too dressy of a note because it just wouldn’t be me.. here is my recent favorite graphic tee.

10 Habits of Happy Moms

Easter (Sunny Side Up)

I hope all of you beautiful moms had a happy Mother’s Day on Sunday!  We had a nice low key day and it was fun being spoiled by my crew.  I was getting Kole ready for school this morning and he said “well.. are you sad mom?  Your special day is over.”  Ha!  Harsh right?  I looked at the breakfast dishes and thought yup.. back to reality. ;)

I’m going to detour quickly just today from home decor, organization and fashion so pop back in for my next post if you come here solely for those things!  I’ve been a mom now for over 15 years and while I hardly feel like that has made me an expert on the subject (right.. ha) I do feel like I have learned and grown so much since I brought my first sweet baby girl home from the hospital.  I was thinking a lot last week about motherhood and the ups and downs I’ve had throughout the years and if there is one thing I’ve learned it’s this: if you are a happy person, truly happy inside, you will be able to give your kids all that they need to be happy and feel loved and successful.  It’s really all about getting in a good place with yourself so that you can endlessly give back to your kids.  In the past 10 plus years I’ve been blogging I often get asked how I always seem to be so happy.  I assure you I have my not so sunny days!  We all do.  But overall.. I really am genuinly happy and there are things I work hard to prioritize that help me stay positive every day.  I’ve seen other happy moms with these same habits and wanted to share them with you.  We’ve all heard these things before, but if you’re a mom and are struggling right now (we have all struggled at one point or another!) really focusing on one or two of these things might help.  These habits have all helped me immensely in this journey of motherhood and have made me a better person overall.

1 – Pursue a hobby/passion/outlet – It’s so easy to lose yourself once you become a mom.  Being a mom is 24/7.. it never stops!  You need an outlet that is just for YOU.  Not something that involves your kids or spouse.  When my girls were around 2 and 4 years old I felt so lost.  I was a stay at home mom and I loved it, but it was hard being home with my little girls all day and Kenny was so busy at work.  I had always loved writing and taking pictures so I started blogging as a fun outlet in the evenings when my girls were asleep and Kenny was still working.  I also spent their nap time scrapbooking as a creative outlet and I joined a gym with a great daycare and started taking aerobics classes a few times a week because in high school and college I loved dancing.  I looked forward to those outlets every day and when I was doing those things I felt more like myself than I had in a long time.  Doing things I loved each day gave me a boost so that the rest of the time when I was on mom duty I was happy and in a good mood and could handle all the things my girls dished out.  9 princess dress outfit changes a day?  Pulling your sister’s hair?  Fishy crackers all over the floor?  No biggie.. bring it on. ;)  What do you love to do that makes you feel excited and alive?  Take a salsa or tennis class, bake desserts, try out for a part in a community play.. whatever it is that brings you joy and happiness outside of being a mom – do it!  You can’t wait for when things “calm down.”  Things NEVER calm down when you have kids (another truth I’ve learned!).  Schedule time in your calendar for your hobby/outlet and then stick to that appointment for yourself like you would for a doctor appointment!  It doesn’t mean you don’t prioritize your kids.  You can be completely there for them and still have something for yourself.  You might have to cut out some TV time or a little sleep (unless those are your happy outlets.. ha!) but you can make it happen if you care enough to make it happen.

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

Life with my girls before little brother came along. :)

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

(I know some of you originally found me because of my early scrapbooking posts!)

2 – Stay productive – Everyone might not feel this way, but I know for me that I’m so much happier when I feel productive.  Days when I accomplish something are always good days for me and as a direct result of my good day I’m more patient and upbeat with my kids.  It doesn’t matter if it’s something as simple as cleaning out a junk drawer.  I just feel happy when I feel like I’ve accomplished something that I care about so I make sure to plan my day and always allow time for the to-do’s that are important to me.  I don’t mean just being busy and putting out fires all day!  Cleaning the kitchen for the 6th time doesn’t count. :)  I mean setting aside time to focus and get something done that is on my goal/priority list so that when I’m spending the rest of the day doing mom activities I still feel accomplished. Not that the mundane mom duties aren’t important!  They are.  But sometimes they can feel.. mundane. :)

(Now that my kids are in school this is easier, but when they were little we would always have “nap/quiet time” in the afternoon and they went to bed earlier at night so I used those times to accomplish things that were important to me.  I would also organize our home while my kids were playing in the same room they were in.  I was spending time with them while also getting something done that was important to me.)

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)
3 – Exercise – Honestly moving every day even if it’s just for 20 minutes makes such a HUGE difference for me when it comes to my mood.  That endorphin rush is real!  I love to start my day with a quick walk/run or exercise class or something.  It immediately puts me in a better mood and makes me happy.  We all know that when we look and feel better about ourselves we behave better to the people around us.  When my girls were little I loved taking them for walks in our jogging stroller (seriously a good jogging stroller is the best investment you can make when you have small kids!).  Fresh air also does wonders for your mood.

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

Ellie and I went on walks every morning.  Getting outside was a huge help to me in those early years of motherhood!

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

Really all of my kids lived in jogging strollers. :)

The best for me is when I can exercise with a friend or two which leads me to my next tip..

4 – Prioritize time with friends – Moms.. this is HUGE.  It’s so important to surround yourself with friends who are going through similar mom struggles.  Spending time laughing and venting with close friends about the ups and downs of life with kids is hands down the best therapy out there!  You can gain so many ideas from each other and more than anything it just helps to know that you’re normal!  You’re not going crazy.. your struggles are real and common to most moms.  Spending time with friends is such a happiness boost and I can always tell by my mood when I’ve gone too long without girlfriend time.  If you don’t have a close circle of mom friends get out of your comfort zone and create one!  When I quit teaching to stay home with Ellie I was so lonely.  We had just moved into a new city and a new neighborhood and all of the friends I had made in San Diego were working.  I had seen young kids in our neighborhood but didn’t know anyone.  Feeling depressed and lonely one day I made flyers.  Flyers you guys!  I’m not kidding.  Although I kind of wish I was. ;)  I hung them on all of the mailboxes in our neighborhood and delivered them door to door.  They said “If you have kids come to the cul – de – sac at 4:00 on Thursday!  Kids can play and moms can chat!”  I was SO nervous no one would come!  I took Ellie who was about 14 months old at the time and went to the cul-de-sac Thursday at 4:00 and to my relief 4 other moms came with small kids!  We all met and had so much fun getting to know each other while the kids played.  We decided we’d meet the next Thursday too.  People in the neighborhood saw us and started hearing about our group in the cul-de-sac and before long we had about 15 moms and over 30 kids meeting once a week for the neighborhood play date.  We met every Thursday for years!  We all became close friends and even though now most of us have moved out of that neighborhood we still keep in touch and get so excited to see each other.

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

(I couldn’t find a picture of us all in the cul-de-sac even though I know I have one!  But this was dinner with a few of my neighborhood mom friends over 10 years ago.  We also started doing moms night out once every other month too!)

I honestly think about our playgroup and can’t believe I dared to initiate it all!  But I did and having mom friends when my kids were little truly saved me.  I really believe that you get back from this world what you put into it so get out there and make new friends.  Invite someone to lunch or invite a couple of moms to meet you at a local park.. make flyers if you have to!  Just put yourself out there, find your tribe and then be there for them and their kids.  Because they will be there for you and yours and having close friends like that will bring a lot of happiness into your life.  (On a side note.. it’s so important to choose your friends wisely!  Spend time with people who work hard, are positive and uplifting and who truly want what’s best for you and your kids.  Stay away from moms who are all about gossip, competition and negativity.)

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

So grateful for all of my amazing friends!

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

Me with 3 of my besties.  We thought we deserved pedicures and diet cokes last week for mother’s day.  I think we were right. :)

5 – Prioritize your marriage – This is so important and can be such a struggle when you have kids.  It’s so easy to lose sight of the relationship you and your husband have with each other when kids come into the picture.  They have a way of taking over and monopolizing every minute of your life!  There’s the obvious solution to schedule date nights but I think it’s also important to find other ways to squeeze in alone time with your spouse.  Kenny and I have always loved going on walks or hikes together.  We try to fit in a quick walk whenever we can.  Sometimes it’s on a week night during a quick 50 minute break in-between driving our kids to activities.  Sometimes it’s early on a Saturday morning before our teenage girls wake up while Kole watches cartoons.  Whenever we have to run quick errands on weekends we go with each other and leave the kids home as much as we can.  Any extra time we can sneak in together is precious because with three kids we are usually in divide and conquer mode going in different directions.  Costco runs are more fun with each other and just spending any time together to laugh and talk and not think about the kids is a good thing!  We were just talking today about how we need to schedule more quick over night trips together on weekends.  It’s hard to get away when you have kids and so many activities going on.  We’ve found the key is scheduling it in advance and then prioritizing it.  If you can’t afford a sitter work out a trade with a close friend.  We used to do that a lot when my girls were little!

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

Getting together with other couples is also something we want to prioritize more.  So nice to take a night off from being mom and dad and just relaxing with couple friends!

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

6 – Take care of yourself – I feel more strongly about this every year!  It really is just re-iterating the things I mentioned above, but honestly.. you can only be the best mom to your kids if you feel good yourself.  Drink water, exercise, get enough sleep (my constant struggle I’m trying to prioritize this year!), make time for things you love.  If you don’t do things like this often you might feel a little selfish when you start prioritizing yourself.  Moms are used to taking care of everyone else first.  But I promise.. the more you focus on fitting in the things you need to feel happy the more you’ll see what a positive impact it has on your whole family.  You’ll be less snappy and won’t feel exhausted and resentful when so many things fall on you.  Because let’s face it.. a lot falls on mom every day!  Tell yourself that when you’re taking care of yourself you are really taking care of your family too because you absolutely are.  You’ll be able to give them your best self instead of your tired, overworked exhausted self.

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

I try to take a bubble bath once a week!  (Usually on Friday nights.)  It’s one of my favorite ways to relax.

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

I light my candles and dim the lights and just soak. :)  I always feel so happy and relaxed after a hot bath!

7 – Don’t compare –  This is hard to do but honestly the quicker you learn to not compare yourself to other moms the happier you’ll be.  No good comes from comparison!  Everyone is different with different life situations and different kids and we all have different strengths and weaknesses.  It’s so important to focus on what you’re doing right and take the pressure off of yourself!  I have a good friend who fixes her kids a big homemade breakfast every day.  Eggs, pancakes.. all the things!  My kids have been raised on cereal and instant oatmeal and get homemade breakfast on special weekends when dad is in the mood to cook. :)  I feel no shame!  And while my friend is certainly a better cook than I am, I don’t think she’s a better mom because she cooks more.  We are both good moms in different ways.  My kids might not wake up to a homemade meal every morning, but they do wake up to a huge hug and smile and a note in their lunch box and they know how much they mean to me.  Just love your kids!  Be there for them.  Do the best that you can and don’t worry about what other moms are doing.  Blogs and IG and Pinterest are so great for ideas and inspiration but if you’re following moms who make you feel like you aren’t doing a good job stop following them.  Stay in your lane and focus on being the best mom you can.  Comparison will never make you happy.  Or make you a better mom.  It’s not about being a “perfect mom” anyway.. it’s about being the perfect mom for your kids and only YOU can do that.

8 – Focus on the positive – Every single day is full of ups and downs.  It’s completely up to us to decide what to focus on.  I’m so grateful my mom was a positive, upbeat person and focused a lot on gratitude when I was growing up because it’s something that comes easily for me now.  You know the movie “Inside Out” with the cute girl Riley who moves to a new city and her emotions are the characters?  We love that movie and every time we watch it my kids tease me about being so much like “Joy” – always trying to cheer everyone up and point out the bright side of every situation.  (We have jokes about who everyone else in that movie represents in our family too. :)  I’m sure I annoy my kids that way but I feel like it’s something they have to learn!  This blog is called Sunny Side Up for a reason. ;)  I really think focusing on the positive is so important if you want to be truly happy.  I went through a really hard season before we had kids when my husband was in law school and we were living on the east coast.  I was teaching school and working jobs after school to keep us out of debt.  Kenny was studying around the clock and I was so homesick for my family and friends and life before we moved.  I decided to keep a gratitude journal because I felt so depressed and negative and it helped me immensely!  I know gratitude journals sound cheesy but you guys.. I’m not kidding.  Actually having to write down things you are grateful for really helps shift your focus.  Life is full of difficult and sad things but it’s also full of fun and wonderful things.  So is motherhood.  Choose every day to focus on the positive things.  It’s a choice you have to deliberately make.  I recently bought this gratitude journal (it’s my current favorite) if you think something like that might help you.

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

(Similar glass jars)

Gratitude jars are also great if you want to involve your kids in focusing on one thing they are grateful for each day.

9 – Establish routines and teach your kids to pitch in – Moms have a million things on their plates every day and we all know how hard it is to focus when the house is a mess and there is no order.  Also kids thrive on routine (especially young kids) so if you’re feeling like your mornings, days or evenings are stressful, take some time to look at your schedule and create some routines and order for your day.  It’s amazing how just getting a routine down for something like laundry can be life changing for your sanity!  I’ve had to do this so many times and as my kids get older and our schedule changes I have to keep tweaking our home routines so that there is a flow to our day and things get done around the house.  It’s hard to teach kids to help around the house because we (meaning all moms) can usually do it so much faster and better, but I’m telling you.. you have to take the time to teach them!  Now that my kids are older and I’m working more it is such a life saver to have their help with cleaning and laundry.  Plus kids need to learn those skills for when they have their own homes someday.  These expectation charts I shared on my blog last summer are a perfect way to get your kids helping around the house and summer is a great time to start if this is something you feel like you need more of in your life!  There have been many times that re-adjusting our routines and getting my kids to pitch in and help more has made all the difference for me and my mood!  And mom’s mood usually sets the tone. :)

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

Anything that becomes a struggle I create a routine for!  This was my system for dealing with outfit drama every morning with my girls when they were younger. :)

Ten Habits of Happy Moms (Sunny Side Up)

Our Daily Expectation Charts!  The one on the left is for younger kids and the one on the right is for older kids.  You can download them for free here.  I’m definitely printing these out again in a few weeks when my kids get out of school.  We loved using them last summer.  I guess I should say I loved using them last summer.  Not sure if my kids were as enthusiastic as I was about them. ;)

10 – Spend quality fun time with your kids –  This is such an obvious thing to do but I’m always amazed at how hard it can be to carve out quality FUN time with each of my kids.  Between all of the school stuff and activities and work and  “Did you eat your breakfast?  Clean your room!  Start your homework!” There are SO many things to keep track of and so many things we have to nag our kids about all day.  I really have to focus every day on just relaxing and looking for time to spend with my kids having fun with them.  Sometimes we can do a special lunch or go on vacation, but mostly it’s important to find little pockets during regular, ordinary days when you can connect on their level.  For me this usually means listening to hip hop music in the car with my teenager and dancing together (trying to ignore all side glances at the stop light) or watching a quick TV show with Ad on the couch because she’s my child who loves to just be together and cuddle.  Or playing ball with Kole for 10 minutes in the hallway and listening with my FULL attention about his latest favorite video game and how he dominated level 4.  It’s not always easy!  Sometimes it’s hard to stop and cuddle on the couch when there is a sink full of dishes and I could care less about Plants vs. Zombies!  But I love my kids and they need my time and attention.  Even though I don’t always enjoy the things they enjoy, getting on their level and showing them that I care about them and the things they care about is what builds a good relationship with them.  Plus just laughing and having fun with my kids takes the stress out of the every day.  Laughing, talking, hugging, spending quality time with them.. often it’s in those moments that I really enjoy my role as a mom and feel so grateful for my kids.

Spring/Summer Family Room Decor

Family Room Spring/Summer Decor (Sunny Side Up)

It occurred to me last week (during the fleeting 2 hours that I had my house clean) that I never shared a Spring tour of any sorts on the blog.  I’ve been focusing my attention on a few other rooms in our house so I didn’t make any huge changes to my decor this year.  But small updates are also fun and like I said.. the house was clean.   It had to be documented. ;)  So here are a few pics of what my family room is looking like this Spring/Summer!  When things are perfectly clean.  Which is usually just on Friday mornings since Thursday is my main cleaning day.  By Friday afternoon the kids are home and the weekend hits and I say good-bye to perfectly fluffed throw pillows. :)

The new art in my family room is probably the biggest change in this space.  I wanted to bring more pink and coral into the room for Summer and love this fun print!  It wasn’t too expensive so perfect to play with for a season or two.

It’s a bit modern and doesn’t really go with the mirror so my fireplace mantel is still a work in progress.  It’s such a hard space for me to decorate!  First because it’s seriously huge.  Second because it’s right next to my decorated console table so I feel like it doesn’t ever look good when I start putting too many things on it.  Vases with flowers and things like that just look like too much because I already have that on my console.  But even though it’s not “done” I’m really loving the pop of color the art brought into the room!

I said to Kenny “what do you think about the new art?  Too modern?  Doesn’t really go with the mirror right?”  He answered “yeah.. maybe take it down.  Whatever you want.”  (He hardly even looked at the art.  He clearly cares so much about our fireplace mantel decor.)  Then I said half under my breath “or we could take down the mirror and do something else there..”  ready to bolt out of the room at a moment’s notice because I knew he’d pay closer attention to that comment!

He answered like I thought he would.. “you’re kidding right!?  Please tell me you’re kidding.”

Our mirror was such an ordeal to hang and clearly the battle wounds are still too fresh.  I’m kind of wanting to switch it out but I knew he wouldn’t be too enthused about that plan.  It’s ok.  I’ve learned with my husband how to slowly introduce an idea I know he won’t love so that even though he doesn’t think he’s warming up to it.. he really is.  I’ll just softly throw it out there a few more times and let the idea marinate a little and then wait until the right moment when he wants to do something I’m not jazzed about to offer a fair trade.

I haven’t stayed happily married for over 20 years by mistake.  There is serious strategy involved. ;)

I did get a couple of new Spring pillows and I know I say this all the time, but I really do love the way simple changes like that makes my space feel brand new!  Our couch has seen better days and this week I’m putting on new slip covers.  YEA.  The linen fabric I chose for this couch wasn’t my smartest move with kids and you can probably see in this picture how hammered it’s getting (it looks worse in person!).  I was going to change the covers a couple of weeks ago but then decided to wait because my parents were coming into town and that usually means lots of take out and late night conversations on the couch.  I didn’t want to feel worried about keeping new couch covers clean!  Although the new fabric I chose is going to be much better for that sort of thing.

I picked up this Azalea at the grocery store right before Easter and it still looks so beautiful!  I can’t believe how long I’ve kept it alive.  I’m trying to take such good care of it because it’s just gorgeous.  All of the various shades of pink are making me so happy in this room!

Happy weekend everyone!  I’m not gonna lie, last week was a tad brutal at our house.  Just way too much going on.  May has officially arrived!  Moms of school age kids.. brace yourselves. :)  We somehow survived and next week is looking a little calmer so I’m grateful for that!

I have SO many fun projects going on that I’m excited to share with you all!  I’m going to try to be better about sharing more progress on IG stories (I’m horrible at IG stories!) so follow me there if you don’t already and hold me accountable. :)  I’m also hoping I’ll have more time to post on the blog next week.  For today I’m popping in quickly with an old favorite post and some fun recent finds I’m excited about!

4th of July Outdoor Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Remember when I decked our outdoor space last summer for the 4th of July?  Just a few small touches and we were ready to party!  I’m hoping to get this all up earlier this month so we can enjoy it for Memorial weekend too.  I thought I’d share this post again in case any of you want to start thinking about patriotic summer decorating!

4th of July Outdoor Decor (Sunny Side Up)

This cute Liberty Burlap Party Banner was so easy to hang.  I got extremely tricky and used painters tape.. but you knew that. :)  We had one windy afternoon and one of the banners fell down so I might have to come up with something a little sturdier this year.

My Flag Lumbar Pillow Covers are back in stock!  These sold out so quickly last year (so did the banner above) so don’t hesitate if you want them!  I also linked similar fun options at the bottom of last year’s post.  I want to get a couple for inside my home too!

Another favorite are these Liberty Burlap Flags.  So easy to pop in a vase for a simple table centerpiece or next to food at outdoor summer BBQ’s.  Let the festivities begin!

4th of July Outdoor Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Ok.. a couple of favorites!  I shared this cute white scallop blouse in my what I wore to Maui post but it had sold out by the time I got my post up.  It just came back in stock!

4th of July Outdoor Decor (Sunny Side Up)

Perfect top for summer.  I’m so ready!  And also so not ready!  Summer brings out mixed emotions doesn’t it? :)

My favorite hello mat is never in stock and I get so many questions about it.  I always share similar options, but I found the exact mat here on sale!  Btw.. for those of you who were asking about my yellow porch flowers they are called “Sweet Broom.”  I’m sad to say that they currently don’t look like they do in this picture anymore.  One of them is sort of with me still and the other.. well.. RIP Sweet Broom.  I don’t think I watered them enough.

Or I watered them too much.

The problem was definitely one or the other.  Knowing my record with living plants it’s amazing I’m trusted with 3 children.

New finds and old favorites (Sunny Side Up)

A couple new favorites!  I ordered this Flutter Sleeve Pom Pom top in white and it’s DARLING!  I’ll share a picture of it on me soon so you can see how it fits.. so cute for summer.

New finds and old favorites (Sunny Side Up)

Another new favorite is this stylish Rattan Round Tray.  Oh the possibilities with a cute tray like this!  I’ll share it styled in my home soon but I wanted to share it and the white top above quickly now because they are on sale this weekend.  Woot woot!

New finds and old favorites (Sunny Side Up)

Lastly I have an old favorite Bliss throw paired with a new favorite Palermo throw in a newish favorite Moroccan basket.  I know.. I’m getting all sorts of tricky up in here. ;)  I love these three items so much and keep moving them back and forth between my family room and living room because they look good everywhere I put them!  (Btw this Bliss throw is the color Pink Peony.  It looks orange or peach on-line, but it’s actually a perfect soft pink.)

Alright.. I’m off to bed!  Trying to prioritize sleep this month because when things get really busy around here that’s usually the first thing to go and then suddenly mom isn’t coping so well and the ship sinks fast. :)

Enjoy what’s left of your weekend friends!

P.S.   I updated my FAVORITES PAGE and all of these items I’ve shared are linked there along with other things I’m loving lately!
