Organized Decor Closet

How is the organizing coming along everyone?  Are we motivated?  Or not so much?  I had a burst of energy this weekend (so happy to finally be feeling better!) so I finished two projects and started another one.  LOVE productive weekends.  It helped that for some reason my kids didn’t have a lot of activities going on Saturday or Sunday (not the norm!) so I was able to stay home, spend time with my family and just chip away at things I’ve been wanting to get done.  What I wouldn’t give for more weekends like this one!

The second item on my 2017 “to-organize list” after organizing my girls’ bathroom drawers was my organizing my decor closet.  You all know I like to switch my decor around constantly once in a while. :)  In our previous house we were tight on space so extra decor I wasn’t using at the moment was stored anywhere I could find room like in my master closet and in my laundry room cupboards.  (Both of those are past organizing posts if you are looking for more ideas!)  When we designed our new home I knew I wanted a closet just for home decor.  The picture above kind of shows where this closet is located in my house.  Walk in our front door (looking into our formal living room), hang a left and go around the corner.  My architect tried to talk me into making this just a coat closet.  It’s close to the front door and he kept trying to convince me I would want more room to hang people’s coats if we were entertaining.

Nope.  I knew that would be the case maybe twice a year.  There are only a few months people can even wear coats in San Diego!  I stayed strong and convinced him I needed a bigger closet, more shelves and less coat space.  So happy I did!

A trip to the ER and a clean slate

Well!  It has been an eventful few days at our house to say the least.  Saturday morning I felt great and pulled my office apart re-organizing half of the room.  Sunday morning I went on a walk with my husband in the morning, came home and suddenly had a stomach ache.  By noon I was sicker than I’ve been in a long time.  SO sick.  Like living in the bathroom sick.  I wasn’t sure if I had eaten something bad or if it was the stomach flu.. all I knew was that it wasn’t good.  I made it through the day (barely and like I said.. living in the bathroom) and went to bed around 9:00.  At 2:00 am I woke up feeling sick and rushed to the bathroom.  The next thing I remember my head was pounding so badly and my husband was holding me.  I’ll spare you the gory details (there were lots of them) but for the next 20 minutes I basically went back and forth between vomiting and passing out until he finally called 911 and an ambulance came and took me to the ER.  (I had passed out initially falling flat – forehead smack on the bathroom tile – and the noise woke my husband up.. thank goodness.)

Pink and Aqua Blue Preteen Girl’s Bedroom

Alright friends.  Today I’m sharing Addison’s pink and aqua blue bedroom.  FINALLY.  I seriously can’t believe I’ve been in my house 3 years now and haven’t taken pictures of my girls’ rooms sooner!  Part of the reason I waited so long is because is they aren’t finished!  I kept thinking I would finish them completely and then put pictures up on the blog.  But I’ve had a recent epiphany and have realized two things.  One: If I wait until they are finished I might never post them.  Ha. :)  And Two: According to my recent survey most of you want progress pics!  So progress is what you’ll get. :)  Here is Ad’s blue and pink bedroom mostly decorated and a lot cleaner than it usually is. ;)

Life Lately

Hello hello friends!  I hope you all enjoyed the weekend!  Extended for some people.  I’m so happy to have my kids home from school Monday and a short school week ahead!  I’ve been doing a lot of organizing around here (love a productive weekend!) and one thing I worked on today was cleaning up my picture folders on my computer.  (You can see how I organize my pictures here.  That post is 4 years old and I still do it the same way!  If the system isn’t broke, don’t fix it.)  :)  I thought I’d share some random pics I came across of what we’ve been up to lately before we dive into more organizing together!  Because if I don’t share it on the blog it’s like it didn’t happen, right?  And we can’t have that. ;)

Girls’ Bathroom – Organized Drawers

Alright friends!  Let’s get this organizing party started, shall we?  :)  In my last post I shared what I do at the beginning of every January.. I make my annual “to organize” list.  It gives me a plan and a place to start!  One of the first spaces on my list this year that I wanted to tackle was my girls’ bathroom drawers.

Getting Organized (where to start!)

You guys!  I can’t thank you all enough for taking a minute to answer the questions I asked on my recent survey!  I have so enjoyed reading all of your responses.  Every single one of them!  If you haven’t taken the survey yet and are a regular reader here I’d love to hear from you!  You can find my survey here.

One question I asked on my survey was what you are all struggling with specifically when it comes to organizing.  WOW!  You all have given me enough blog content for three straight years!  Ha!  So many of the same things were repeated over and over and they are a lot of the same things I’ve struggled with too!  I’ll share some survey responses with you soon, but for today I wanted to quickly address a few words I heard over and over.

“I don’t know where to start!”

You guys!  I have been there so many times!  When we have a lot of clutter and spaces that are a mess we just don’t know where to even begin.  It’s overwhelming to say the least!  To get rid of this feeling, I do the same thing every January.  Time to make a plan of attack!  It helps me so much with that overwhelmed feeling of “where do I start!?”  If you feel overwhelmed by everything you want/need to organize this year and don’t know where to begin do this:

Sunny Side Up Reader Survey (2017)

What a week!  I’m not going to lie, it was rough around here getting back in the swing of things after Christmas break!  Kole started school Tuesday and my girls started school Wednesday and I’d like to say that it has felt good to be back in our routine the past two days, but all I feel right now is.. tired.  The routine is busy and I’m tired.  And we’ve only been going two days!  Ha!  Re-entry.  Never an easy thing.  Plus I have bronchitis.. did I mention that?  I’ve been sick. :(  So that’s where a lot of the tired is coming from I’m sure.  I hope all of you are adjusting better than I have. ;)

Five favorite things that keep me organized

My friends!  It’s time.  What time you ask?  My favorite time I answer.  The time of year when the rest of the world gets an itch to do what I love to do year round.

Time to organize. :)

I’ve got so many projects in the works and fun things to share with you all this year!  But first I’m sharing my top Five Favorite Things that keep me Organized.  My sweet friend Kris of Driven by Decor invited me to join her along with Jennifer of Dimples and Tangles, Pam of Simple Details and Lisa of Shine Your Light for the fun “My Five Favorites” series they host each month.  This month’s theme is Five Favorite Things that keep me Organized.  I’m not going to lie.  This one was tough for me.  Tough to narrow my favorite organizers down to a mere five. ;)  But here they are.. my Five Favorites!  (*affiliate links used)

1 – DREAM DRAWER DIVIDERS

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you know how I feel about dream drawer dividers.  They have been one of my all time favorite organizers for years!  I use them in all of our clothes closets, in my pantry (pantry post is coming!), and in my bathroom drawers (also coming!).  They expand to fit any size of drawer and don’t take up a lot of space.  Such a great way to keep things in their place and make the most of the drawer space you have.  Love them!

Master bedroom mirrors and a recent favorite store

Friends.  I’m so excited for the new year.  I have so much to share with you all!  I’ve been making a lot of progress on a few rooms in our house and one of them is our master bedroom.  It’s not finished yet, but it’s close!  I have spent a lot of time decorating this room because I really want to LOVE every single piece of furniture and decor.  So basically I’m approaching it no different than I have every other room in my house.  If I’m lucky I’ll finish decorating my home in 8-10 years.. just in time for styles to change and for me to get an itch to start all over. ;)

I knew I wanted mirrors over my nightstands and was having a hard time finding the “perfect” mirrors.  I had looked high and low and spent hours searching for the mirrors of my dreams.  I was talking to my designer/friend who has helped me with a few things in my house (she has done all of my custom furniture and drapes) and she suggested that I look on-line at Horchow.  I had heard of Horchow before, but hadn’t spent any time on their site.  Later that night I started scrolling through Horchow’s website and quickly began falling in love with A LOT of items.  They have beautiful furniture and decor.  And then.. all of the sudden.. there they were.  On my computer screen.  “THE ONES.”  The mirrors that at first glance made my heart skip a beat!  Did I do a happy dance?  Why yes.  Yes I did. :)

I bought Horchow’s Pagoda Shaped Mirror.  Two of them for above my nightstands and to say I’m in love would be an understatement.  My master bedroom is part casual/rustic/farmhouse and part tailored/dressy items with a bit of bohemian tossed in. :)  It feels dressy but also casual (a lot like my formal living room) which is a favorite look and style of mine.  Really I’m just buying items I fall in love with and mixing them all together pretending it’s an actual style.  Ha!  I’m good at pretending. ;)

Organizing Christmas Decor

I hope you are all enjoying this week!  The days between Christmas and New Years are some of my favorite days of the year.  For me they are a mix of relaxing with family and thinking about the New Year ahead.  And eating.  Lots of eating.  Because we can all eat what we want and then hit the gym hard with the rest of the world in January, right?  :)  I know a lot of people are itching to take down their Christmas decor as soon as Christmas day is over.  I’m not one of those people!  I would seriously keep my Christmas decor up for six months if I thought I could pull it off.  In fact I told my family all today that next year I might start decorating trees before Halloween.  The holiday season just goes by too quickly for me!  I want those tree lights going year round.  But alas.. at some point it all has to come down.  And when I finally do pull the trigger and start putting things away, something inside me snaps.  And I want every single thing in my house to be clean and organized.

I know you know the feeling. :)

So I start with my Christmas decor and make sure I’m putting it all away as organized as possible.  Today I’m sharing a few ideas for how to organize Christmas decor once it all comes down.  Some of these pics are from our previous house and some I took this year before I decorated for Christmas.
